He says his clients are now looking for the next big thing that can drive the stock forward again. His ideas include capacity expansion in Texas and Germany. After that, he predicts Tesla will open up five more plants between now and the middle of this decade.</p>\n<p>Jonas is also looking for Tesla to unveil another new vehicle model. By his estimation, Tesla covers only about 15% of the total addressable market for the auto industry with its Y, X, 3, and S models. Model expansion will be a positive. That isn’t on the near-term horizon, though the company is due to deliver its Cybertruck later in 2021.</p>\n<p>Canaccord analyst&nbsp;Jonathan Dorsheimer&nbsp;is looking in a different area for a catalyst: residential solar power. Part of the reason he is bullish is that “Tesla is creating an energy brand and an Apple-esque ecosystem of products with customer focused connectivity, seamlessly marrying car, solar, and back-up power,” he wrote in a report released Sunday.</p>\n<p>Dorsheimer is bullish, but feeling a little down lately. He still rates the stock Buy, but he cut his&nbsp;price target&nbsp;to $812 from $974 in his report. Among other things, he is disappointed by battery delays. Tesla is planning to use larger battery cells that promise better range, charge time, and costs. Those batteries aren’t available yet.</p>\n<p>Looking a little further back, Goldman Sachs analyst&nbsp;Mark Delaney&nbsp;was watching Tesla’s Model S Plaid delivery event last week. The Plaid can go zero to 60 miles per hour in less than two seconds. Delaney was impressed by the technology, but pointed out the Plaid, at roughly $130,000, is a niche vehicle. He is looking for 2021 deliveries to exceed expectations. Delaney is modeling 875,000 vehicles for Tesla in 2021. In January, CureVacstruck a deal with Bayerto accelerate the development and supply of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate. The company’s mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccine is now in clinical trials, and Phase2b/3 data is expected this summer. Since its IPO, the stock has nearly doubled, closingFriday at $111.48 .</p><p>Strong performances need not be dictated by success on the first day of trading. Four of the companies that made our list were busted deals—meaning that their shares fell below their IPO prices on the first day of trading.</p><p>Case in point:ZIM Integrated Shipping(ZIM). The asset-light shipping company went public in January with a $15 offering price,but closed that day at $11.50. Yet by May 19, ZIM’s stockhad gained 295%after itreported first-quarter earnings of $589.6 million, or $5.35 a share. The companyalso declared a special cash dividend of $2 a share. ZIM is the second-best-performing IPO in the past 12 months, based on a total return of 209.33%, according to FactSet. It closed on Friday at $46.40.</p><p>Another example isAcademy Sports &amp; Outdoors(ASO): The companywent public in Octoberwith a $13 offering price, with the stock closing at $12.99 during its first day of public trading<b>.</b>Academy was profitable when it went public, a rarity in the IPO market. InMarch, the company reported that its net incomesoared 416%, to $91.5 million, or 97 cents a share, for its fourth fiscal quarter ended Jan. 30. Its shares have nearly tripled since the IPO, and were trading at $36.53 on Friday. Still, these companies are producing gains.</p><p>ConsiderBigCommerce(BIGC), which provides a cloud e-commerce platform that is used by such customers as SkullCandy, Savannah Bee Co, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.BigCommerce&nbsp;went public in Augustwith a $24 offering price—and the stock soared 201% that day,closing at $72.27. Since the IPO, the shares have fallen nearly 25%, amid a broader technology selloff.</p><p>The company, however, has reported some positive developments, like a deal in February that wouldgive BigCommerce customersthe ability to sell directly on Walmart Marketplace. It also reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results. BigCommerce has produced a total return of nearly 127%, according to FactSet.</p><p>Other companies have seen their shares jump since going public.Dream Finders Homes (DFH), which designs, builds, and sells homes in high-growth markets, was already profitable when it made its trading debut in January at $13 a share. Dream Finders stock has gained nearly 52% since its IPO, trading Friday at $31.77. We narrowed our search to companies with the highesttotal returns from their stock offering prices..That left us with 11 names. First up:CureVac(ticker: CVAC), which was the screen’s best-performing IPO and had a total return of 596.75%. CureVac specializes in the messenger RNA, or mRNA, technology that is the basis of several leading Covid-19 vaccine programs. The German biotech company went public inAugust at $16 a shareand soared 249% in its first day, with the stock closing at $55.90. In January, CureVacstruck a deal with Bayerto accelerate the development and supply of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate. The company’s mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccine is now in clinical trials, and Phase2b/3 data is expected this summer. Since its IPO, the stock has nearly doubled, closingFriday at $111.48 .Strong performances need not be dictated by success on the first day of trading. Four of the companies that made our list were busted deals—meaning that their shares fell below their IPO prices on the first day of trading.Case in point:ZIM Integrated Shipping(ZIM). The asset-light shipping company went public in January with a $15 offering price,but closed that day at $11.50. Yet by May 19, ZIM’s stockhad gained 295%after itreported first-quarter earnings of $589.6 million, or $5.35 a share. The companyalso declared a special cash dividend of $2 a share. ZIM is the second-best-performing IPO in the past 12 months, based on a total return of 209.33%, according to FactSet. It closed on Friday at $46.40.Another example isAcademy Sports & Outdoors(ASO): The companywent public in Octoberwith a $13 offering price, with the stock closing at $12.99 during its first day of public trading.Academy was profitable when it went public, a rarity in the IPO market. InMarch, the company reported that its net incomesoared 416%, to $91.5 million, or 97 cents a share, for its fourth fiscal quarter ended Jan. 30. Its shares have nearly tripled since the IPO, and were trading at $36.53 on Friday. Academy Sports ranks third with a total return from the offering price of 181%, FactSet said.Strong GainersThese companies all went public in the last year and produced high total returns compared to their IPO prices.Rounding out this category areCorsair Gaming(CRSR), a California companythat makes performance gear for gamers, and the Dubai-basedYalla Group(YALA), whichmakes a voice-chat app usedin the Middle East and North Africa called Yalla. Both stocks have rebounded strongly after less-than-stellar September IPOs.Some companies that made our list soared during their debuts, but have since seen their shares retreat. Still, these companies are producing gains.ConsiderBigCommerce(BIGC), which provides a cloud e-commerce platform that is used by such customers as SkullCandy, Savannah Bee Co, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.BigCommerce went public in Augustwith a $24 offering price—and the stock soared 201% that day,closing at $72.27. Since the IPO, the shares have fallen nearly 25%, amid a broader technology selloff.The company, however, has reported some positive developments, like a deal in February that wouldgive BigCommerce customersthe ability to sell directly on Walmart Marketplace. It also reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results. BigCommerce has produced a total return of nearly 127%, according to FactSet.Other companies have seen their shares jump since going public.Dream Finders Homes (DFH), which designs, builds, and sells homes in high-growth markets, was already profitable when it made its trading debut in January at $13 a share. Shares soared 61%, $20.95 on its first day.Prices for houses in Marchgrew at the fastest rate since 2005, which has helped real estate stocks. Dream Finders stock has gained nearly 52% since its IPO, trading Friday at $31.77. But, as Humphrey Neill, the father of contrarian analysis, constantly reminded his clients: “When everyone thinks alike, everyone is likely to be wrong.”</p>\n<p>Conventional wisdom certainly appears to be based on the evidence. M2 money supply (consisting of cash, checking deposits, and so-called “near money” that can be converted into cash with little difficulty) has grown at a faster rate over the past 12 months than at any time over the last six decades. Sure enough, the S&amp;P 500&nbsp;has turned in one of its strongest 12-month returns ever.</p>\n<p>This is just one data point. To investigate whether it is the exception or the rule, I analyzed several decades of historical record in search of a statistically significant correlation between the Federal Reserve’s stimulus and the stock market. I came up empty. The bulls therefore need to think twice before reassuring themselves that the bull market will continue just because the Federal Reserve is committed to priming the monetary pump.</p>\n<p>In searching for possible correlations, I relied on two different measures of the money supply. I focused on M2 Money Supply (cash, checking deposits, and so-called ‘near money’ that can be converted into cash with little difficulty) and the Federal Reserve’s total balance sheet assets (a broader measure which reflects the Fed’s direct intervention in the economy through the purchase of securities and Treasuries). Regardless of the definition, however, the correlations between the stock market and money supply are not stable over time.</p>\n<p>On the one hand, over the last decade there has been a strong positive correlation, just as we’ve seen over the last 12 months and what the bulls are assuming is the general pattern. But, on the other hand, this correlation was negative before that, which meant that in those earlier years faster money supply growth was more often than not associated with slower stock market growth, and vice versa. That’s just the opposite of what the bulls are assuming.</p>\n<p>After this first pass through the data, the most we can say is that sometimes faster money supply growth is good for stocks, and sometimes it isn’t.</p>\n<p>That in turn suggests that the relationship between the money supply and the stock market is a lot more complex than most investors think. A full discussion of that relationship is beyond the scope of this column, but we know that it depends in large part on investors’ appetite for risk. In a “risk-on” environment, for example, it is more likely that aggressive Fed easing will be considered bullish. But when investors are preoccupied with the downside (“risk-off”) then an aggressive Fed might cause investors to become even more worried.</p>\n<p>As is often the case, John Maynard Keynes, the famous British economist of a century ago, shrewdly captured this dynamic. He pointed out that central banks will be powerless to stimulate the economy if there is no appetite for risk-taking, and in such an environment the Fed’s efforts will be like “pushing on a string.”</p>\n<p>Another indication of the complexity of the relationship between money supply and the stock market is how much money velocity varies over time. I’m referring to the average number of times that money changes hands in a given year. When velocity declines, it takes a bigger money supply to have the same economic impact. Or, to put it another way, a bigger money supply won’t be stimulating if velocity declines too much in the process.</p>\n<p>This puts recent experience in perspective. As you can see from the accompanying chart, velocity plunged at the beginning of the pandemic and remains at one of its lowest levels in six decades.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/96bbd1cd5123ac2704ccf0953509870f\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"849\"></p>\n<p>The bottom line: The money supply undoubtedly is related to the course of both the economy and the stock market. I’m referring to the average number of times that money changes hands in a given year. When velocity declines, it takes a bigger money supply to have the same economic impact. concluded the economy was primed.</p>\n<p>The median Fed policymaker projection for economic growth in&nbsp;2021 was increased from 4.2% as of December to 6.5%, which would&nbsp;if achieved be the fastest rate of expansion since 1984.</p>\n<p>Even with its policies unchanged, the outcome of the meeting&nbsp;suggested an evolving debate&nbsp;among policymakers about just how&nbsp;quickly recovery may occur, with four officials,&nbsp; including&nbsp;Dallas Fed's Kaplan, projecting a rate increase may be appropriate as early as next year.</p>\n<p>That is much faster than the core of officials who don't expect rates will need to rise until at least 2024.</p>\n<p>A shift in Fed strategy last year saw the Fed put a higher&nbsp;premium on encouraging employment, and saying it wanted&nbsp;inflation to run above its formal 2% target \"for some time\"&nbsp;in&nbsp;order to offset years when the pace of price increases was too&nbsp;weak.</p>\n<p>That new framework was adopted unanimously. Most retail investors have to wait until companies start publicly trading to buy stock.<i>Barron’s</i>looked at businesses that have gone public in the past 12 months to find some strong performers.</p><p>First, we searched for companies that listed via a traditional initial public offering: This meant we filtered out businesses that merged withspecial purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs. Then, we searched for companies that went public on either the New York Stock Exchange or the Nasdaq. We also focused on entities that had at least a $1 billion market capitalization. We narrowed our search to companies with the highesttotal returns from their stock offering prices..</p><p>That left us with 11 names. First up:CureVac(ticker: CVAC), which was the screen’s best-performing IPO and had a total return of 596.75%. CureVac specializes in the messenger RNA, or mRNA, technology that is the basis of several leading Covid-19 vaccine programs. The German biotech company went public inAugust at $16 a shareand soared 249% in its first day, with the stock closing at $55.90. In January, CureVacstruck a deal with Bayerto accelerate the development and supply of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate. The company’s mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccine is now in clinical trials, and Phase2b/3 data is expected this summer. Since its IPO, the stock has nearly doubled, closingFriday at $111.48 .</p><p>Strong performances need not be dictated by success on the first day of trading. Four of the companies that made our list were busted deals—meaning that their shares fell below their IPO prices on the first day of trading.</p><p>Case in point:ZIM Integrated Shipping(ZIM). The asset-light shipping company went public in January with a $15 offering price,but closed that day at $11.50. Yet by May 19, ZIM’s stockhad gained 295%after itreported first-quarter earnings of $589.6 million, or $5.35 a share. The companyalso declared a special cash dividend of $2 a share. ZIM is the second-best-performing IPO in the past 12 months, based on a total return of 209.33%, according to FactSet. It closed on Friday at $46.40.</p><p>Another example isAcademy Sports &amp; Outdoors(ASO): The companywent public in Octoberwith a $13 offering price, with the stock closing at $12.99 during its first day of public trading<b>.</b>Academy was profitable when it went public, a rarity in the IPO market. InMarch, the company reported that its net incomesoared 416%, to $91.5 million, or 97 cents a share, for its fourth fiscal quarter ended Jan. 30. Its shares have nearly tripled since the IPO, and were trading at $36.53 on Friday. Academy Sports ranks third with a total return from the offering price of 181%, FactSet said.</p><p>Strong GainersThese companies all went public in the last year and produced high total returns compared to their IPO prices.<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9dedc209ede147958c015d3a586bb587\" tg-width=\"630\" tg-height=\"606\">Rounding out this category areCorsair Gaming(CRSR), a California companythat makes performance gear for gamers, and the Dubai-basedYalla Group(YALA), whichmakes a voice-chat app usedin the Middle East and North Africa called Yalla. Both stocks have rebounded strongly after less-than-stellar September IPOs.</p><p>Some companies that made our list soared during their debuts, but have since seen their shares retreat. Still, these companies are producing gains.</p><p>ConsiderBigCommerce(BIGC), which provides a cloud e-commerce platform that is used by such customers as SkullCandy, Savannah Bee Co, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.BigCommerce&nbsp;went public in Augustwith a $24 offering price—and the stock soared 201% that day,closing at $72.27. Since the IPO, the shares have fallen nearly 25%, amid a broader technology selloff.</p><p>The company, however, has reported some positive developments, like a deal in February that wouldgive BigCommerce customersthe ability to sell directly on Walmart Marketplace. It also reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results. BigCommerce has produced a total return of nearly 127%, according to FactSet.</p><p>Other companies have seen their shares jump since going public.Dream Finders Homes (DFH), which designs, builds, and sells homes in high-growth markets, was already profitable when it made its trading debut in January at $13 a share. Shares soared 61%, $20.95 on its first day.Prices for houses in Marchgrew at the fastest rate since 2005, which has helped real estate stocks. Dream Finders stock has gained nearly 52% since its IPO, trading Friday at $31.77. Most retail investors have to wait until companies start publicly trading to buy stock.Barron’slooked at businesses that have gone public in the past 12 months to find some strong performers.First, we searched for companies that listed via a traditional initial public offering: This meant we filtered out businesses that merged withspecial purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs. Then, we searched for companies that went public on either the New York Stock Exchange or the Nasdaq. We also focused on entities that had at least a $1 billion market capitalization. We narrowed our search to companies with the highesttotal returns from their stock offering prices..That left us with 11 names. First up:CureVac(ticker: CVAC), which was the screen’s best-performing IPO and had a total return of 596.75%. CureVac specializes in the messenger RNA, or mRNA, technology that is the basis of several leading Covid-19 vaccine programs. The German biotech company went public inAugust at $16 a shareand soared 249% in its first day, with the stock closing at $55.90. In January, CureVacstruck a deal with Bayerto accelerate the development and supply of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate. The company’s mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccine is now in clinical trials, and Phase2b/3 data is expected this summer. Since its IPO, the stock has nearly doubled, closingFriday at $111.48 .Strong performances need not be dictated by success on the first day of trading. Four of the companies that made our list were busted deals—meaning that their shares fell below their IPO prices on the first day of trading.Case in point:ZIM Integrated Shipping(ZIM). The asset-light shipping company went public in January with a $15 offering price,but closed that day at $11.50. Yet by May 19, ZIM’s stockhad gained 295%after itreported first-quarter earnings of $589.6 million, or $5.35 a share. The companyalso declared a special cash dividend of $2 a share. ZIM is the second-best-performing IPO in the past 12 months, based on a total return of 209.33%, according to FactSet. It closed on Friday at $46.40.Another example isAcademy Sports & Outdoors(ASO): The companywent public in Octoberwith a $13 offering price, with the stock closing at $12.99 during its first day of public trading.Academy was profitable when it went public, a rarity in the IPO market. InMarch, the company reported that its net incomesoared 416%, to $91.5 million, or 97 cents a share, for its fourth fiscal quarter ended Jan. 30. Its shares have nearly tripled since the IPO, and were trading at $36.53 on Friday. Academy Sports ranks third with a total return from the offering price of 181%, FactSet said.Strong GainersThese companies all went public in the last year and produced high total returns compared to their IPO prices.Rounding out this category areCorsair Gaming(CRSR), a California companythat makes performance gear for gamers, and the Dubai-basedYalla Group(YALA), whichmakes a voice-chat app usedin the Middle East and North Africa called Yalla. Both stocks have rebounded strongly after less-than-stellar September IPOs.Some companies that made our list soared during their debuts, but have since seen their shares retreat. Still, these companies are producing gains.ConsiderBigCommerce(BIGC), which provides a cloud e-commerce platform that is used by such customers as SkullCandy, Savannah Bee Co, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.BigCommerce went public in Augustwith a $24 offering price—and the stock soared 201% that day,closing at $72.27. Since the IPO, the shares have fallen nearly 25%, amid a broader technology selloff.The company, however, has reported some positive developments, like a deal in February that wouldgive BigCommerce customersthe ability to sell directly on Walmart Marketplace. It also reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results. BigCommerce has produced a total return of nearly 127%, according to FactSet.Other companies have seen their shares jump since going public.Dream Finders Homes (DFH), which designs, builds, and sells homes in high-growth markets, was already profitable when it made its trading debut in January at $13 a share. Shares soared 61%, $20.95 on its first day.Prices for houses in Marchgrew at the fastest rate since 2005, which has helped real estate stocks. Dream Finders stock has gained nearly 52% since its IPO, trading Friday at $31.77.
