its comeback, Microsoft has gone 21 years without a stock split.A recent study by Bank of America revealed that stock-split stocks have outperformed the S&P 500 for decades.Super Micro Computer could split to reignite the stock's momentum.Artificial intelligence (AI) superstar stock Nvidia (NVDA 1.75%) announced a stock split on May 22 this year. Share prices have climbed 36% since then. The wild success could have some other AI companies on Wall Street contemplating following suit (even if the split isn't necessarily the sole reason behind the stock's performance).Remember, a stock split doesn't change anything about the underlying business or the stock's fundamentals. It just divides the stock into more shares with proportionally lower prices and per-share financials. Companies split their stock for numerous reasons, including making shares easier to buy and sell for employees (who might get them as stock options in lieu of payment) and investors.With Nvidia finalizing its stock split on June 10, the question that naturally follows is: Which AI companies might be next for a stock split? Three Fool.com contributors identified Microsoft (MSFT 0.22%), Meta Platforms (META 0.11%), and Super Micro Computer (SMCI -3.05%) as those most likely AI stocks to split next.Here is why.This venerable tech giant looks primed for a splitMicrosoft: As the company that until very recently had the world's most valuable market cap, Microsoft is not a surprising candidate for a stock split. Considering how much stock price appreciation it has seen in the past few years, the surprising thing about Microsoft's stock is that it has been more than 21 years since Microsoft last split its stock.Between the late 1980s and early 2000s, when Microsoft was the dominated PC operating system company, stock splits were much more common. During that period, the stock split nine times.However, the Dot-Com market crash and then the rise of Apple chipped away at Microsoft's leadership over time, particularly after it launched the iPhone in 2007. Between 2000 and 2014, when Steve Ballmer was CEO, Microsoft stock lost 37% of its value.The state of the company finally improved when Satya Nadella took the CEO position in 2014. He redefined Microsoft as a cloud company and, later, a leader in AI. Over Nadella's 10-year tenure, Microsoft stock has risen more than 1,110%, taking it to $440 per share as of this writing.MSFT data by YChartsGiven that level of stock price growth, the need for a split grew as well. The company's growth suggests that stock price appreciation is likely to continue. In the first three quarters of fiscal 2024 (ended March 31), net income increased by 26% year over year. The company's outlook for the rest of the fiscal year points to double-digit percentage revenue growth as well.Another factor pointing to a stock split involves Microsoft being a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Since the Dow is price-weighted, Microsoft will probably need to split its stock so as not to have an outsized effect on the index's movement. That should ensure that the 21-year stock split drought finally comes to an end.Meta Platforms has never issued a stock split, but the time may finally be hereMeta Platforms: All in all, 2024 has been a great year for the \"Magnificent Seven\" stocks. Indeed, six of the seven (Tesla being the only exception) have recorded double-digit percentage gains year to date. Yet of these stocks, only one has never split its shares: Meta Platforms. The time for that first-ever split has arrived. Here's why.First off, the stock is expensive. A Meta share trades for around $504 -- placing the stock beyond the reach of many retail investors. By implementing a 3-for-1 or even 5-for-1 stock split, Meta could significantly lower its share price and make the stock more accessible to retail investors who might not be able to buy fractional shares, potentially reducing the price to a more reasonable range of $100 to $175.A recent study from Bank of America revealed another compelling reason for Meta to split its shares: outperformance. The study, which examined stock splits since 1980, found that stocks that were split beat the S&P 500 during the 12 months that followed the split. Stock split or not, the company remains one of the top-performing tech stocks thanks to its lucrative digital advertising business. With its Q1 revenue growing at 27% year over year and earnings soaring 127%, long-term investors would be wise to consider Meta as a buy-and-hold candidate.Super Micro Computer could opt to refuel its rally with a stock splitSuper Micro Computer: For a while, Super Micro Computer was seemingly the AI version of Robin to Nvidia's Batman. But share prices have stalled and declined after topping out at $1,229. Meanwhile, Nvidia keeps climbing to new highs. Here is why Super Micro Computer, or Supermicro as it's also known, could still get back on track, necessitating a stock split.The company sells modular server systems for data centers. This is great for companies that don't have the expertise or time to custom-build their own and just want to deploy compute as quickly as possible. Like Nvidia, Supermicro has become a \"go-to\" choice as AI spending surges. You can see below how revenue growth has accelerated to 200% year over year, and management has underlined this by noting that demand for its products is dramatically outpacing the broader industry.SMCI Revenue (Quarterly YoY Growth) data by YChartsEvidence suggests that Supermicro could benefit from data center tailwinds for some time. According to Newmark, AI will drive enough data center demand to double its power consumption by 2030 from current levels. Supermicro has done nearly $12 billion in trailing-12-month revenue; analysts believe annual revenue could double to over $23 billion by next June.Meanwhile, the company has a healthy outlook for earnings growth. Analysts believe earnings per share will grow by an average of 52% annually for the next three to five years. In other words, AI tailwinds remain intact, and fundamental strength should eventually push shares higher. Today, the stock trades at a forward P/E of 33, making it a bargain if Supermicro realizes such strong earnings growth. These catalysts could drive Super Micro Computer higher, an exciting prospect for investors.So why split the stock?The company has never split its stock despite shares appreciating over 9,400% since its IPO. Now, trading at over $800 per share, the stock is harder to buy and sell (less liquid). It's harder for investors to slowly buy shares over time without having a ton of money. Employees sitting on profitable equity in the company must sell in chunks when shares trade at such a price. Splitting the stock lowers the share price and alleviates these problems. Plus, the positive attention a stock split usually generates could help move the share price again after shares have stalled in recent weeks. At that point, the Fed saw the peak terminal rate at 4.6%. Rates are likely heading much higher than what the market has priced in for 2023.</p><p>The problem is that the market doesn&#39;t believe the Fed and currently sees rates at just 4.6% by December 2023.</p><h2>Much Higher, For Much Longer</h2><p>A 50 bps rate hike at the December meeting has been well-telegraphed, and Powell confirmed as much at his Q&amp;A session at the Brookings Institutions on November 30. At least 6 Fed governors have openly noted that they see rates peaking above 5%, and while Powell may not have indicated where he sees the terminal rate, he has stated he sees it higher than the September projection. Additionally, Fed board members like Christopher Waller have suggested that rates have a long way to go and is among the Fed&#39;s most hawkish members. Also, Loretta Mester saw the market pricing of a peak rate of around 5% as not being far off.</p><p>Jim Bullard of the St. Louis Fed thinks rates need to rise to between 5 and 7% to be restrictive enough to kill inflation. Meanwhile, Mary Daly of the San Francisco Fed sees rates at 5% as a good starting point. Raphael Bostic of the Atlanta Fed sees rates between 4.75% and 5%. Thomas Barkin of the Richmond Fed notes that rates may need to rise above 5%, while Neel Kashkari sees rates above his 4.9% September projection.</p><p>So if there were only 6 FOMC members who saw rates above 5% at the September FOMC, there are likely to be at least nine now, and probably several more at the December FOMC meeting that will signal that rates need to be in that 5 to 5.25% region for the peak terminal rate.</p><p>If more evidence is needed, this article from the Wall Street Journal followed the jobs report &#34;suggesting&#34; the Fed would raise rates above 5% in 2023. Then another piece came out on December 5, which again &#34;suggested&#34; rates going above 5% in 2023. The WSJ has often telegraphed Fed monetary policy in 2022, such as back in June ahead of the Fed&#39;s first 75 bps rate hike.</p><p>Given the messaging that rates are likely to be at least 5% and probably higher, it is highly probable the Fed will illustrate its projections through the December dot plot noting a terminal rate for 2023 at 5.1% or 50 bps higher rate than the September projection for 2023.</p><h2>The Market Doesn&#39;t Believe The Fed</h2><p>Of course, this would come at odds with the market, which currently sees the peak terminal rate around 4.9%, and then the Fed cutting rates to 4.58% by December 2023, which is <i>lower than</i>the Fed&#39;s September projections of 4.6%. The market does not believe the Fed will hold rates above 5% for all of 2023, despite Fed officials consistently delivering that message for months.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d4a665b5ca0f1dc3cdb171765f8123ac\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"312\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Mott Capital</span></p><p>It is perhaps the reasoning behind Powell&#39;s apparent change in positioning at the Brookings Institution, where he seemed to give the market a pass regarding the recent easing of financial conditions. Instead, he focused on telegraphing the pace of rate hikes slowing from 75 to 50 bps. He knew he could also push back against the easing of financial conditions two weeks later at the December FOMC through the projections indicating a higher for longer timing, which the market has been unwilling to accept.</p><h2>Financial Conditions Need To Tighten</h2><p>By any measure, financial conditions have eased a lot since mid-October. The easing financial conditions do not help the Fed&#39;s overall cause of keeping policy restrictive enough to bring down inflation.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/47e20e14c2bfd67a0ee98e94ebb5ceec\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"369\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Bloomberg</span></p><p>If the Fed can deliver this message of a 5% or higher terminal rate through the end of 2023, we will find that the 2-year rate is too low, which will need to rise. Since the summer, the 2-year rate has been trading at a discount to the December Fed Funds Futures by 10 to 25 bps. So if the Fed can convince the market it sees the Fed Funds rate at 5 to 5.25% by the end of 2023, then it seems probable that the 2-year rate can trade to as high as 4.8% to 5%.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ab6bbea9babf2b8cc871b24fb6b423b2\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"370\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Bloomberg</span></p><p>It would likely result in the yield curve steepening further and the spread between the 2-year and the 10-year becoming more deeply inverted, as the market prices in a higher recession risk, and rates just staying higher for a longer period.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/51598801716677c82df044dc4df5b629\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"274\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Bloomberg</span></p><p>It would probably help to reverse a lot of the weakening in the dollar index and potentially push the index higher and back towards 110 over time.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3cbb1e7d55a783c8cbbac5deb72b840e\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"274\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Bloomberg</span></p><p>It should also raise the VIX index as traders look to add protection again due to the increased risk of the Fed over-tightening. The VIX has already started moving higher since the Fed minutes were released just a couple of weeks ago, which also messaged a higher-for-longer approach to monetary policy in 2023.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/937f171fa291fe09bb5af70849139149\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"274\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Bloomberg</span></p><p>A strong dollar, higher rates, and higher implied volatility should tighten financial conditions. That will be a massive headwind for equity prices, resulting in stocks giving back nearly all of the gains witnessed since the October lows and potentially filling the technical gaps at 3,745 and 3,580.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/49db7e3529087186cb6b9611353a2bf9\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"284\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Bloomberg</span></p><p>Is it likely to materialize at the time of the release of the FOMC statement or the press conference? That is impossible to say because that will depend on where implied volatility levels are and whether or not implied volatility is high enough to create a short-squeeze once IV comes crashing down following the news. As of December 9, IV was relatively high, at almost 31% for December 14 options expiration, and is only likely to rise further heading to the meeting next week.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/190ead5d4738acc2bc98a96cab961e25\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"368\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Bloomberg</span></p><h2>Could Lose Control</h2><p>If the Fed fails to gain control of the narrative and prove to the market it plans to get rates to 5% and hold them there in 2023, it risks losing control of the market, resulting in financial conditions easing further as rates drop, the dollar weakens, implied volatility falls, and stocks rip higher.</p><p>Further easing of financial conditions would likely result in mortgage rates falling, lifting the housing market. At that point, the Fed saw the peak terminal rate at 4.6%. Rates are likely heading much higher than what the market has priced in for 2023.The problem is that the market doesn't believe the Fed and currently sees rates at just 4.6% by December 2023.Much Higher, For Much LongerA 50 bps rate hike at the December meeting has been well-telegraphed, and Powell confirmed as much at his Q&A session at the Brookings Institutions on November 30. At least 6 Fed governors have openly noted that they see rates peaking above 5%, and while Powell may not have indicated where he sees the terminal rate, he has stated he sees it higher than the September projection. Additionally, Fed board members like Christopher Waller have suggested that rates have a long way to go and is among the Fed's most hawkish members. Also, Loretta Mester saw the market pricing of a peak rate of around 5% as not being far off.Jim Bullard of the St. Louis Fed thinks rates need to rise to between 5 and 7% to be restrictive enough to kill inflation. Meanwhile, Mary Daly of the San Francisco Fed sees rates at 5% as a good starting point. Raphael Bostic of the Atlanta Fed sees rates between 4.75% and 5%. Thomas Barkin of the Richmond Fed notes that rates may need to rise above 5%, while Neel Kashkari sees rates above his 4.9% September projection.So if there were only 6 FOMC members who saw rates above 5% at the September FOMC, there are likely to be at least nine now, and probably several more at the December FOMC meeting that will signal that rates need to be in that 5 to 5.25% region for the peak terminal rate.If more evidence is needed, this article from the Wall Street Journal followed the jobs report \"suggesting\" the Fed would raise rates above 5% in 2023. Then another piece came out on December 5, which again \"suggested\" rates going above 5% in 2023. The WSJ has often telegraphed Fed monetary policy in 2022, such as back in June ahead of the Fed's first 75 bps rate hike.Given the messaging that rates are likely to be at least 5% and probably higher, it is highly probable the Fed will illustrate its projections through the December dot plot noting a terminal rate for 2023 at 5.1% or 50 bps higher rate than the September projection for 2023.The Market Doesn't Believe The FedOf course, this would come at odds with the market, which currently sees the peak terminal rate around 4.9%, and then the Fed cutting rates to 4.58% by December 2023, which is lower thanthe Fed's September projections of 4.6%. The market does not believe the Fed will hold rates above 5% for all of 2023, despite Fed officials consistently delivering that message for months.Mott CapitalIt is perhaps the reasoning behind Powell's apparent change in positioning at the Brookings Institution, where he seemed to give the market a pass regarding the recent easing of financial conditions. Instead, he focused on telegraphing the pace of rate hikes slowing from 75 to 50 bps. He knew he could also push back against the easing of financial conditions two weeks later at the December FOMC through the projections indicating a higher for longer timing, which the market has been unwilling to accept.Financial Conditions Need To TightenBy any measure, financial conditions have eased a lot since mid-October. The easing financial conditions do not help the Fed's overall cause of keeping policy restrictive enough to bring down inflation.BloombergIf the Fed can deliver this message of a 5% or higher terminal rate through the end of 2023, we will find that the 2-year rate is too low, which will need to rise. Since the summer, the 2-year rate has been trading at a discount to the December Fed Funds Futures by 10 to 25 bps. So if the Fed can convince the market it sees the Fed Funds rate at 5 to 5.25% by the end of 2023, then it seems probable that the 2-year rate can trade to as high as 4.8% to 5%.BloombergIt would likely result in the yield curve steepening further and the spread between the 2-year and the 10-year becoming more deeply inverted, as the market prices in a higher recession risk, and rates just staying higher for a longer period.BloombergIt would probably help to reverse a lot of the weakening in the dollar index and potentially push the index higher and back towards 110 over time.BloombergIt should also raise the VIX index as traders look to add protection again due to the increased risk of the Fed over-tightening. The VIX has already started moving higher since the Fed minutes were released just a couple of weeks ago, which also messaged a higher-for-longer approach to monetary policy in 2023.BloombergA strong dollar, higher rates, and higher implied volatility should tighten financial conditions. That will be a massive headwind for equity prices, resulting in stocks giving back nearly all of the gains witnessed since the October lows and potentially filling the technical gaps at 3,745 and 3,580.BloombergIs it likely to materialize at the time of the release of the FOMC statement or the press conference? That is impossible to say because that will depend on where implied volatility levels are and whether or not implied volatility is high enough to create a short-squeeze once IV comes crashing down following the news. As of December 9, IV was relatively high, at almost 31% for December 14 options expiration, and is only likely to rise further heading to the meeting next week.BloombergCould Lose ControlIf the Fed fails to gain control of the narrative and prove to the market it plans to get rates to 5% and hold them there in 2023, it risks losing control of the market, resulting in financial conditions easing further as rates drop, the dollar weakens, implied volatility falls, and stocks rip higher.Further easing of financial conditions would likely result in mortgage rates falling, lifting the housing market. For the Nasdaq, Friday was the eighth session in April, out of 15 trading days this month, where the index either rose or fell by more than 2%.</p><p>&#34;It&#39;s not very common, over the course of my time doing this job, for the market to move 2% in either direction and to think &#39;there&#39;s not too much to read into that&#39;,&#34; said Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at OANDA.</p><p>&#34;That&#39;s not normal, but that&#39;s just how things have been for such a long time now.&#34;</p><p>Concerns about risks from interest rate hikes continued to reverberate after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell&#39;s hawkish pivot on Thursday, where he backed moving more quickly to combat inflation and said a 50-basis-point increase would be &#34;on the table&#34; when the Fed meets in May.</p><p>The idea of &#34;front-end loading&#34; the U.S. central bank&#39;s retreat from super-easy monetary policy, which Powell articulated support for on Thursday, has also forced traders to re-evaluate how aggressive subsequent rate rises would be.</p><p>The CBOE Volatility index, also known as Wall Street&#39;s fear gauge, jumped on Friday, ending at its highest level since mid-March.</p><p>Meanwhile, the latest earnings forecasts to jolt investors came from healthcare, with HCA Healthcare and Intuitive Surgical Inc the worst performers on the S&amp;P 500.</p><p>HCA slumped 21.8% after reporting a downbeat profit view, while other hospital operators felt the contagion: Tenet Healthcare, Community Health Systems and Universal Health Services all tumbled between 14% and 17.9%.</p><p>Surgical robot maker Intuitive Surgical dropped 14.3% after warning of weaker demand from hospitals due to tighter finances.</p><p>All 11 major S&amp;P 500 sectors were down, although the 3.6% slip by healthcare was outdone by materials, which was off 3.7%.</p><p>Materials was weighed down by Nucor Corp - down 8.3% after hitting a record high after posting earnings on Thursday - and Freeport-McMoRan Inc, which slipped 6.8% as investors fretted over how interest rate hikes would impact copper miners.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 981.36 points, or 2.82%, to 33,811.4, the S&amp;P 500 lost 121.88 points, or 2.77%, to 4,271.78 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 335.36 points, or 2.55%, to 12,839.29.</p><p>For the week, the Dow dipped 1.9%, the S&amp;P dropped 2.8%, and the Nasdaq declined 3.8%.</p><p>The prospect of a more hawkish Fed has led to a rocky start to the year for equities, with Friday&#39;s sell-off taking declines on both the S&amp;P and Dow since the start of the year beyond 10%.</p><p>The trend is more pronounced in tech and growth shares whose valuations are more vulnerable to rising bond yields. The Nasdaq is down 17.9% in 2022.</p><p>Earnings are due next week for the four biggest U.S. companies by market capitalization: Apple, Microsoft , Amazon and Google parent Alphabet.</p><p>The quartet declined between 2.4% and 4.1% on Friday. At that point, the Fed saw the peak terminal rate at 4.6%. Rates are likely heading much higher than what the market has priced in for 2023.</p><p>The problem is that the market doesn&#39;t believe the Fed and currently sees rates at just 4.6% by December 2023.</p><h2>Much Higher, For Much Longer</h2><p>A 50 bps rate hike at the December meeting has been well-telegraphed, and Powell confirmed as much at his Q&amp;A session at the Brookings Institutions on November 30. At least 6 Fed governors have openly noted that they see rates peaking above 5%, and while Powell may not have indicated where he sees the terminal rate, he has stated he sees it higher than the September projection. Additionally, Fed board members like Christopher Waller have suggested that rates have a long way to go and is among the Fed&#39;s most hawkish members. Also, Loretta Mester saw the market pricing of a peak rate of around 5% as not being far off.</p><p>Jim Bullard of the St. Louis Fed thinks rates need to rise to between 5 and 7% to be restrictive enough to kill inflation. Meanwhile, Mary Daly of the San Francisco Fed sees rates at 5% as a good starting point. Raphael Bostic of the Atlanta Fed sees rates between 4.75% and 5%. Thomas Barkin of the Richmond Fed notes that rates may need to rise above 5%, while Neel Kashkari sees rates above his 4.9% September projection.</p><p>So if there were only 6 FOMC members who saw rates above 5% at the September FOMC, there are likely to be at least nine now, and probably several more at the December FOMC meeting that will signal that rates need to be in that 5 to 5.25% region for the peak terminal rate.</p><p>If more evidence is needed, this article from the Wall Street Journal followed the jobs report &#34;suggesting&#34; the Fed would raise rates above 5% in 2023. Then another piece came out on December 5, which again &#34;suggested&#34; rates going above 5% in 2023. The WSJ has often telegraphed Fed monetary policy in 2022, such as back in June ahead of the Fed&#39;s first 75 bps rate hike.</p><p>Given the messaging that rates are likely to be at least 5% and probably higher, it is highly probable the Fed will illustrate its projections through the December dot plot noting a terminal rate for 2023 at 5.1% or 50 bps higher rate than the September projection for 2023.</p><h2>The Market Doesn&#39;t Believe The Fed</h2><p>Of course, this would come at odds with the market, which currently sees the peak terminal rate around 4.9%, and then the Fed cutting rates to 4.58% by December 2023, which is <i>lower than</i>the Fed&#39;s September projections of 4.6%. The market does not believe the Fed will hold rates above 5% for all of 2023, despite Fed officials consistently delivering that message for months.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d4a665b5ca0f1dc3cdb171765f8123ac\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"312\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Mott Capital</span></p><p>It is perhaps the reasoning behind Powell&#39;s apparent change in positioning at the Brookings Institution, where he seemed to give the market a pass regarding the recent easing of financial conditions. Instead, he focused on telegraphing the pace of rate hikes slowing from 75 to 50 bps. He knew he could also push back against the easing of financial conditions two weeks later at the December FOMC through the projections indicating a higher for longer timing, which the market has been unwilling to accept.</p><h2>Financial Conditions Need To Tighten</h2><p>By any measure, financial conditions have eased a lot since mid-October. The easing financial conditions do not help the Fed&#39;s overall cause of keeping policy restrictive enough to bring down inflation.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/47e20e14c2bfd67a0ee98e94ebb5ceec\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"369\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Bloomberg</span></p><p>If the Fed can deliver this message of a 5% or higher terminal rate through the end of 2023, we will find that the 2-year rate is too low, which will need to rise. Since the summer, the 2-year rate has been trading at a discount to the December Fed Funds Futures by 10 to 25 bps. At that point, the Fed saw the peak terminal rate at 4.6%. Rates are likely heading much higher than what the market has priced in for 2023.The problem is that the market doesn't believe the Fed and currently sees rates at just 4.6% by December 2023.Much Higher, For Much LongerA 50 bps rate hike at the December meeting has been well-telegraphed, and Powell confirmed as much at his Q&A session at the Brookings Institutions on November 30. At least 6 Fed governors have openly noted that they see rates peaking above 5%, and while Powell may not have indicated where he sees the terminal rate, he has stated he sees it higher than the September projection. Additionally, Fed board members like Christopher Waller have suggested that rates have a long way to go and is among the Fed's most hawkish members. Also, Loretta Mester saw the market pricing of a peak rate of around 5% as not being far off.Jim Bullard of the St. Louis Fed thinks rates need to rise to between 5 and 7% to be restrictive enough to kill inflation. Meanwhile, Mary Daly of the San Francisco Fed sees rates at 5% as a good starting point. Raphael Bostic of the Atlanta Fed sees rates between 4.75% and 5%. Thomas Barkin of the Richmond Fed notes that rates may need to rise above 5%, while Neel Kashkari sees rates above his 4.9% September projection.So if there were only 6 FOMC members who saw rates above 5% at the September FOMC, there are likely to be at least nine now, and probably several more at the December FOMC meeting that will signal that rates need to be in that 5 to 5.25% region for the peak terminal rate.If more evidence is needed, this article from the Wall Street Journal followed the jobs report \"suggesting\" the Fed would raise rates above 5% in 2023. Then another piece came out on December 5, which again \"suggested\" rates going above 5% in 2023. The WSJ has often telegraphed Fed monetary policy in 2022, such as back in June ahead of the Fed's first 75 bps rate hike.Given the messaging that rates are likely to be at least 5% and probably higher, it is highly probable the Fed will illustrate its projections through the December dot plot noting a terminal rate for 2023 at 5.1% or 50 bps higher rate than the September projection for 2023.The Market Doesn't Believe The FedOf course, this would come at odds with the market, which currently sees the peak terminal rate around 4.9%, and then the Fed cutting rates to 4.58% by December 2023, which is lower thanthe Fed's September projections of 4.6%. The market does not believe the Fed will hold rates above 5% for all of 2023, despite Fed officials consistently delivering that message for months.Mott CapitalIt is perhaps the reasoning behind Powell's apparent change in positioning at the Brookings Institution, where he seemed to give the market a pass regarding the recent easing of financial conditions. Instead, he focused on telegraphing the pace of rate hikes slowing from 75 to 50 bps. He knew he could also push back against the easing of financial conditions two weeks later at the December FOMC through the projections indicating a higher for longer timing, which the market has been unwilling to accept.Financial Conditions Need To TightenBy any measure, financial conditions have eased a lot since mid-October. The easing financial conditions do not help the Fed's overall cause of keeping policy restrictive enough to bring down inflation.BloombergIf the Fed can deliver this message of a 5% or higher terminal rate through the end of 2023, we will find that the 2-year rate is too low, which will need to rise. For the Nasdaq, Friday was the eighth session in April, out of 15 trading days this month, where the index either rose or fell by more than 2%.</p><p>&#34;It&#39;s not very common, over the course of my time doing this job, for the market to move 2% in either direction and to think &#39;there&#39;s not too much to read into that&#39;,&#34; said Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at OANDA.</p><p>&#34;That&#39;s not normal, but that&#39;s just how things have been for such a long time now.&#34;</p><p>Concerns about risks from interest rate hikes continued to reverberate after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell&#39;s hawkish pivot on Thursday, where he backed moving more quickly to combat inflation and said a 50-basis-point increase would be &#34;on the table&#34; when the Fed meets in May.</p><p>The idea of &#34;front-end loading&#34; the U.S. central bank&#39;s retreat from super-easy monetary policy, which Powell articulated support for on Thursday, has also forced traders to re-evaluate how aggressive subsequent rate rises would be.</p><p>The CBOE Volatility index, also known as Wall Street&#39;s fear gauge, jumped on Friday, ending at its highest level since mid-March.</p><p>Meanwhile, the latest earnings forecasts to jolt investors came from healthcare, with HCA Healthcare and Intuitive Surgical Inc the worst performers on the S&amp;P 500.</p><p>HCA slumped 21.8% after reporting a downbeat profit view, while other hospital operators felt the contagion: Tenet Healthcare, Community Health Systems and Universal Health Services all tumbled between 14% and 17.9%.</p><p>Surgical robot maker Intuitive Surgical dropped 14.3% after warning of weaker demand from hospitals due to tighter finances.</p><p>All 11 major S&amp;P 500 sectors were down, although the 3.6% slip by healthcare was outdone by materials, which was off 3.7%.</p><p>Materials was weighed down by Nucor Corp - down 8.3% after hitting a record high after posting earnings on Thursday - and Freeport-McMoRan Inc, which slipped 6.8% as investors fretted over how interest rate hikes would impact copper miners.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 981.36 points, or 2.82%, to 33,811.4, the S&amp;P 500 lost 121.88 points, or 2.77%, to 4,271.78 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 335.36 points, or 2.55%, to 12,839.29.</p><p>For the week, the Dow dipped 1.9%, the S&amp;P dropped 2.8%, and the Nasdaq declined 3.8%.</p><p>The prospect of a more hawkish Fed has led to a rocky start to the year for equities, with Friday&#39;s sell-off taking declines on both the S&amp;P and Dow since the start of the year beyond 10%.</p><p>The trend is more pronounced in tech and growth shares whose valuations are more vulnerable to rising bond yields. The Nasdaq is down 17.9% in 2022.</p><p>Earnings are due next week for the four biggest U.S. companies by market capitalization: Apple, Microsoft , Amazon and Google parent Alphabet.</p><p>The quartet declined between 2.4% and 4.1% on Friday.
