Now, the company is using one of its most potent weapons to achieve this goal: Jack Ma.

After temporarily disappearing from public view due to an anti-monopoly investigation at the end of 2020, China's most renowned entrepreneur has now returned to Alibaba's campuses ā and heās more directly involved than heās been in half a decade, according to people familiar with the company. There are increasingly clear signs of his behind-the-scenes manipulation, especially in Alibaba's shift of business focus to artificial intelligence and its challenges to e-commerce rivals JD.com and Meituan. Ma was instrumental in Alibabaās decision to spend as much as 50 billion yuan ($7 billion) on subsidies to beat back JDās surprise entry to the market, said one of the people, requesting not to be named because the matter is private.

Starting from 2023, the operations of Alibaba are being managed by two of Jack Ma's longest-serving deputies, Joe Tsai and Eddie Wu. There is no clear information yet on whether Jack Ma himself will return in any official capacity. An Alibaba representative didnāt respond to an email with a detailed request for comment. However, people familiar with the company's operations said that the 61-year-old founder is at his most hands-on since resigning as chairman in 2019. Beyond helping orchestrate billions in spending, heās also seeking constant updates on Alibabaās broader AI endeavors. In one instance, he messaged a senior manager three times in a day asking for updates, according to one of the people.

Ma was once the richest and most influential technology business leader in China. His return has been highly anticipated, and it is seen as a signal that China's previously freewheeling technology industry is regaining support from the Beijing authorities. But heās expected to keep a lower profile than before the crackdown, when he appeared on panels at Davos and judged an African talent show.

Awards Ceremony Of Africa Netpreneur Prize 2019 Held In Ghana

"Jack Ma is Alibaba's biggest PR figure, biggest personality, biggest idol," said Li Chengdong, head of Beijing-based internet think-tank Haitun. "The return of the big boss means he's no longer a risk, and that just gets everyone's blood pumping."

Ma is coming to terms with the new realities in Chinese e-commerce, marked by red-hot competition and a battle for retail users hunting for meals, groceries, and electronics delivered in an hour or less. Top company officials are trying to make him understand that the days when Alibaba held 85% of the market are long gone, one of the people said. Heās betting that the company's core shopping platform Taobao can beat JD and Meituan following recent success in clawing back market share. As of July, Alibaba has 43% of Chinaās food delivery market, trailing Meituan with 47%, according to Goldman Sachs Inc.

However, this battle might cause a conflict between Jack Ma and the authorities who want to terminate what they consider as "malicious subsidies". Moreover, heās risking fresh ire over Alibabaās role in the price war.

In 2020, a controversial speech given by Jack Ma led to his withdrawal from the public eye. Just a few days after he publicly criticized Chinese financial institutions as "pawnshops", the regulatory authorities blocked Alibaba's plan to list Ant Group. A few weeks later, the Chinese government launched a long-term campaign aimed at strengthening the state's control over the economy to curb the domestic wealthy class. Jack Ma suddenly found himself at the center of a regulatory storm, which quickly spread to numerous competitors ranging from Didi Global Company to the then large-scale online education companies, forcing other billionaire entrepreneurs to hide their identities and triggering the largest wealth loss event in modern Chinese history. Alibaba's market value lost nearly 700 billion US dollars - equivalent to the current market value of the entire Tencent Holdings Limited.

During a visit to the headquarters of Alibabaās cloud division in April, Ma walked past walls pinned with emotional messages from long-serving employees describing the difficulties the company faced during his time away. Flanked by staff sitting on mats on staircases, and with employees listening in from Tokyo and Hong Kong, Ma showed off his trademark eloquence, attendees said, also requesting anonymity to discuss the event.

āTechnology isnāt just about conquering the stars and the oceans,ā he said, according to a transcript reviewed by Bloomberg News. āItās about preserving the spark in all of us.ā

Ma went on to spell out the crucial role of the companyās cloud platform, its self-made T-head chips, and its Qwen family of AI models, about which he said he was receiving daily updates. After the event, some attendees said they felt pumped up and inspired, as if they had witnessed the culture of a startup on its first day.

Alibaba has come a long way since its founding in 1999, when Ma scraped together $80,000 from 80 investors to start an online marketplace. In 2014, it scored the single biggest coming out party at the time with a $25 billion IPO. In the following years it swung from strength to strength, pushing its market cap past $800 billion. But after Ma fell out with regulators, and the pandemic crippled Chinaās economy, its stock tanked.

As he looks to restore Alibabaās former glory, Ma is counting on familiar faces Wu and Tsai as well as rising star Jiang Fan. Wu is viewed as more permanent than a transitional figure and his tech background makes him well-placed to continue to lead, especially on AI, the people said. As chairman, Tsai serves as Maās main ally on the board, while Jiang has been entrusted to run a new-look e-commerce operation that today stretches from Singapore to Istanbul.

āAlibaba has clearly already been in very good hands with the return of pioneers like Eddie, Joe and Jiang Fan,ā said Vey-Sern Ling, managing director at Union Bancaire PrivĆ©e. āIt has refocused on technology and its core businesses with disciplined investments and arguably is now entering a phase where it starts to reap returns."

Wu is leading the companyās top priority: the pursuit of artificial general intelligence. In February, Alibaba vowed to spend more than 380 billion yuan on AI and cloud infrastructure over the next three years. Although widespread AI monetization remains out of reach, the company managed in August to notch a 26% jump in cloud revenue ā its fastest pace of quarterly expansion in years. That helped push its stock increase for the year to 88% through Mondayās close, though its $380 billion market cap is less than half of its peak.

Apart from the field of artificial intelligence, Jack Ma has also exerted influence on the company's core e-commerce business - which remains the company's largest source of profit. According to a person close to Jack Ma, the decline in Alibaba's market share in 2023 directly prompted Jack Ma to support the removal of the then CEO Daniel Zhang. In the same year, Jack Ma released a message on an internal forum, urging the company to "correct its direction". At that time, the new e-commerce giant Pinduoduo Holdings was on the verge of surpassing Alibaba's market value, and it did eventually achieve this. The company is still recovering from a series of mistakes made under Zhang's leadership, when, with Jack Ma's tacit approval, Zhang invested tens of billions of yuan in large supermarket chains and made a wrong bet that Chinese consumption would further deepen and expand. During Zhang's tenure, Alibaba was split into six independent departments, including the cloud services and logistics departments, each of which had the right to conduct an initial public offering on its own. However, due to market fluctuations, these plans were ultimately shelved. The firstred capital, which left Alibaba, did not respond to requests for comment and refused to provide his contact information.

āJack has kind of a moral authority in the company to make the big calls and also to criticize executives, indirectly or directly, or criticize strategy when he thinks it's in the wrong direction,ā said Duncan Clark, author of Alibaba: The House That Jack Ma Built. āHe's not a day-to-day micromanager. But his word or his displeasure can be expressed in a way which will make the company make changes."

Jiang has been entrusted with significant responsibilities, tasked with managing Alibaba's more unified e-commerce empire, and he is now coordinating food delivery, hotel reservations and logistics operations more closely. According to informed sources, this former software engineer was once part of a group of executives personally mentored by Jack Ma. Although he was removed from the core leadership team that influences board appointments after a scandal in 2020, his position has been restored this year.

Although Jack Ma's return has strengthened the company's internal confidence in its direction, it has also brought some challenges. These sources said that his presence within the company has made the organizational structure more complex, as some employees regard him as the highest decision-maker of Alibaba. However, he does not have a formal title and no longer participates in more specific decision-making.

To some, Maās return feels like a last-ditch effort by a first-generation tech founder to reclaim his legacy.

There is no clear information yet on whether Jack Ma himself will return in any official capacity. An Alibaba representative didnāt respond to an email with a detailed request for comment. But putting the record high into context can help you think through the consequences of investing, financial advisers say. Hereās how market strategists and wealth advisers suggest framing things. What a Milestone Like 5,000 MeansThe S&P 500 at 5,000 sounds impressive, but you may be better off ignoring āthe false portents of big round numbers,ā said Dan Egan, vice president of behavioral finance and investing at robo-adviser Betterment.āDonāt overinterpret any one move as being a big meaningful thing,ā he said. āDay-to-day moves are random noise and itās the long-term pattern that you pay attention to.āMorningstar Wealth Chief Investment Officer for the Americas Marta Norton agrees the threshold isnāt as important as it may appear. āThere is a natural growth to the markets, so you should be hitting milestones if the markets are operating the way they should be,ā Norton said. What gives Norton pause is not that the S&P 500 is at 5,000 but the stock marketās valuation. āThere is a lot of research showing the price at which you buy things is as impactful, if not more impactful, than your holding for the long term,ā she said.āFrom our perspective, most of the big-name stocks are pretty expensive at this point, and to look at 2023 returns and assume that forward into 2024 is a really dangerous thing.āIt is now incredibly easy and cheap to get even broader stock market exposure through low-priced index funds that track the total stock market universe, whether thatās in the US or with a diversified world portfolio, Bettermentās Egan said.Think About Your TimingTrying to time the market by jumping in and out at seemingly opportune times has a lousy track record, and everyoneās heard the saying about retail investors ābuying high and selling low.ā But sitting out of the market in cash is also bad market timing.āIf time plays any meaningful role in someoneās investment strategy, as it should if youāre considering equities, then the sidelines are not the place to be even when we approach these milestones,ā said Luke Keene, chief investment officer of Leverty Financial Group. āNor does the milestone necessarily signal an entry point when you take the long-term view.āKeene wants his clients with cash to get off the sidelines but counsels them to soften their entry into the market by dollar-cost averaging ā investing money in the market at regular intervals.Explore Contrarian ViewpointsPeople tend to become more confident the higher the market goes, said Dan Suzuki, deputy chief investment officer at Richard Bernstein Advisors, and flows follow performance since āpeople like momentum and like to buy something thatās working.āSuzuki worries, however, about a lost decade for investors who buy the S&P 500 or just the biggest names in the market now. āThere is a generational opportunity to rebalance portfolios into some cheaper places that people have overlooked and left for dead,ā he said. Areas he places in that category include international, small caps, value stocks and companies that are beneficiaries of inflation. The USās share of the global stock market is now 64%, up from around 40% in 2010, and is at its most expensive level ever viewed next to the rest of the world, Suzuki wrote in a recent research note. āPositioning and valuation suggest that investors expect the US equity dominance of the past 15 years will last indefinitely, but history seems to suggest otherwise,ā he wrote.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"SPY":1.1,".SPX":1.1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3915,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":187672092287200,"gmtCreate":1686846005781,"gmtModify":1686846008644,"author":{"id":"3576283399326455","authorId":"3576283399326455","name":"davidsoh","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/5b156961bf473077f33ef1426426000a","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3576283399326455","idStr":"3576283399326455"},"themes":[],"title":"","htmlText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ becareful...it won't to the moon so easily.","listText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ becareful...it won't to the moon so easily.","text":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ becareful...it won't to the moon so easily.","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/187672092287200","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3243,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":186348131504280,"gmtCreate":1686534582992,"gmtModify":1686534587491,"author":{"id":"3576283399326455","authorId":"3576283399326455","name":"davidsoh","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/5b156961bf473077f33ef1426426000a","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3576283399326455","idStr":"3576283399326455"},"themes":[],"title":"","htmlText":"If drop below $1/ can start the buy and keep ..... Despite this, he expects the companyās performance to rebound in 2HFY2023.PropNex may see its transaction volumes improve with more supply. Ong points out that the supply of private housing under the Government Land Sales programme has increased from 3,500 units on the Confirmed List in the 2H2022 to 4,100 units in 1H2023.Meanwhile, on the public housing front, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) will also launch up to 23,000 flats this year aside from about 40,000 new flats in total from 2024-2025, subject to prevailing demand.Given that locals and permanent residents still dominate home sales, Ong expects most new launches to proceed as scheduled. However, developers will need to price their units more sensitively given the high interest rates and uncertain macro environment, he says.āIn fact, Far East Organization and its joint venture partner Sino Group sold 520 units at The Reserve Residences on its first weekend on May 27 and 28. This sales figure translates to 82% of units released (635) and 71% of total units (732) at an average price of $2,450 per sq ft,ā adds Ong.PropNextās rental, HDB resale, landed, commercial and industrial segments are unlikely to be affected much by the latest cooling measures, Ong says. Together, these segments account for close to 40% of its FY2022 revenue. While there may be some slowdown in the sales of high end and luxury homes in the core central region, Ong believes that foreign investors may shift their focus to commercial and shophouse properties.Maybank rolls forward PropNexās valuation to FY2024 and pegs it at a higher PE of 15x from 14x previously, given its growing market share and better trading liquidity post 1-1 bonus issue in May 2023.Ong also notes that during May 19 to 22, PropNex executive director Kelvin Fong acquired 784,200 shares in the open market at an average price of $1.02 per share, lifting his direct and deemed interest in PropNex to 8.85% from 8.75% previously.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"OYY.SI":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3191,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":186333464932456,"gmtCreate":1686530848394,"gmtModify":1686530853623,"author":{"id":"3576283399326455","authorId":"3576283399326455","name":"davidsoh","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/5b156961bf473077f33ef1426426000a","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3576283399326455","idStr":"3576283399326455"},"themes":[],"title":"","htmlText":"I don think is a Bull run ! These are strange times for the stock market as companies that are worth a Trillion lose in oneday what most companies are not even worth in their lifetime. Keep in mind, Tesla lost nearly 10% on a day the market rebounded. If the recent sentiment prevails on Tesla (as we are betting), then the next few red days for the market will be much harder for Tesla longs. But, with such pain come opportunities for those who can stomach the wild rides.

The stock is rebounding a bit in premarket due to the general market mood and the news that Cathy WoodĀ dippedĀ into the sell-off. But we strongly believe the next few days will provide some juicy opportunities for those willing to sell cash-secured puts. Tesla's recent stock split makes these transactions a lot easier for retail investors. Before the recent 3:1 split, selling a single contract for 100 shares would have required three times the capital to be set aside. Let us use the chain below as an example and see how things look now post-split.

TSLA Option Chain (Think or Swim)
Key data points

Strike Price: $200

Expiration Date: November 4th, 2022, exactly a month from today.

Premium: $6/share, for a total of $600.

In simple words, the put seller collects $600 immediately to buy 100 shares of Tesla at $200 if the stock reaches $200 or below by November 4th, 2022. Bear in mind that time decay is in favor of the option seller, meaning as days go by, the option values decline.

What's the expected return and possible outcomes?

Return:Ā The premium collected ($600) for setting aside $20,000 represents a 3% return for a month. This is a handy return anytime and even more so in the current market environment. At this time, the market assigns at 77.20% probability that Tesla remains above $200 by expiration on November 4th. To reiterate the impact of the recent stock split, the same transaction would have required $60,000 to be set aside as we'd have been talking about a $600 strike price. Granted, the premium returns would be higher (in dollar), but it is common sense that more investors can afford $20,000 compared to those who can afford $60,000.

Outcome #1:Ā If Tesla stays above $200 by the expiration date, the option seller just retains the premium mentioned above. The option seller will not be obligated to buy the shares.

Outcome #2:Ā If Tesla goes below $200 by the expiration date, the option seller will be forced to buy 100 shares at $200, irrespective of where the stock trades at that time. Keeping the premium netted in mind, the average cost, in this case, will be $194 ($200 minus $6).

Outcome #3:Ā As an option seller, one can "buy to close" anytime instead of waiting till the expiration date. That may be appealing to those who have the time and patience to play short-dated options many times over. But we typically let the option expire before choosing another chain (or another stock).

Outcome #4: We will write in detail about this in a future article, but we wanted to mention this as many readers of the Amazon (AMZN)Ā articleĀ pointed out. An option seller can always roll into future dated options. That is, instead of getting out of the game entirely by following one of the first three outcomes above, you can close the current option and initiate a new chain with a different strike/expiration/premium combination as a single transaction. There are risks and advantages to this as we plan to describe later.

Why $200 Looks attractive?

Trend:Ā Apart from being a nice round number, $200 is about 20% below the current market price, a bear market by itself by definition. That is on top of the 36% already lost from highs, making $200 more than 50% off from highs. In our view, that is a compelling enough pullback for a company that still hasĀ many growth avenuesĀ in front of it.

Valuation:Ā At $200, Tesla will be trading at a PEG ratio of less than 1. This is based on a forward multiple of 46 [$200 divided byĀ forward EPSĀ of $4.32] and theĀ five year expected growth rateĀ of 55%. As avid followers of Growth at Reasonable Price [GARP] would attest, a PEG of less than 1 makes a stock more attractive.

Technical:Ā From a technical standpoint, $200 has historically offered plenty of support to the stock. As shown in the chart below, the stock has bounced off from $200 level at least five times in the last two years.

TSLA Chart (Google Charts)

Many ways to skin the cat

If the $200 strike price and the 3% premium return don't appeal to you and if you are looking for a higher premium return, consider strike price like the one below. In this example, the options seller agrees to buy 100 shares of Tesla at $220 should the stock reach that by November 4th, while collecting a premium of about $11 per share. That's a much higher return of 5% return in a month, but the risk the seller takes here is that the strike price is just 10% away from the current market price. One more day like yesterday, and you may be obligated to buy the shares. That is not necessarily a good or bad thing. It just depends on what your priority is.

TSLA Chain (Think or Swim)

Be aware of your risks and choices

Once again, please bear in mind that if your primary interest is in getting premiums, selling puts during down-trending markets may not be the best strategy. If the market blood bath continues, your stock may reach the strike price before you blink. However, if your interest is in acquiring the stock should things fall further, this is a wise strategy. The added income through premium does not hurt either. If you already hold at least 100 shares of Tesla, you may want to consider selling covered call if you understand that strategy. ThisĀ articleĀ explains some basics of it.

Conclusion

Tesla is a volatile company. TSLA is a volatile stock. Tesla is led by a volatile man. And the market is volatile these days. That makes it a double-double-whammy. In such cases, we tend to prefer lower strike prices. Play safe.jetcityimageTesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) lost nearly 10% of its stock price recently after deliveries underwhelmed as Seeking Alpha has coveredĀ here. These are strange times for the stock market as companies that are worth a Trillion lose in oneday what most companies are not even worth in their lifetime. Keep in mind, Tesla lost nearly 10% on a day the market rebounded. If the recent sentiment prevails on Tesla (as we are betting), then the next few red days for the market will be much harder for Tesla longs. But, with such pain come opportunities for those who can stomach the wild rides.The stock is rebounding a bit in premarket due to the general market mood and the news that Cathy WoodĀ dippedĀ into the sell-off. But we strongly believe the next few days will provide some juicy opportunities for those willing to sell cash-secured puts. Tesla's recent stock split makes these transactions a lot easier for retail investors. Before the recent 3:1 split, selling a single contract for 100 shares would have required three times the capital to be set aside. Let us use the chain below as an example and see how things look now post-split.TSLA Option Chain (Think or Swim)Key data pointsStrike Price: $200Expiration Date: November 4th, 2022, exactly a month from today.Premium: $6/share, for a total of $600.In simple words, the put seller collects $600 immediately to buy 100 shares of Tesla at $200 if the stock reaches $200 or below by November 4th, 2022. Bear in mind that time decay is in favor of the option seller, meaning as days go by, the option values decline.What's the expected return and possible outcomes?Return:Ā The premium collected ($600) for setting aside $20,000 represents a 3% return for a month. This is a handy return anytime and even more so in the current market environment. At this time, the market assigns at 77.20% probability that Tesla remains above $200 by expiration on November 4th. To reiterate the impact of the recent stock split, the same transaction would have required $60,000 to be set aside as we'd have been talking about a $600 strike price. Granted, the premium returns would be higher (in dollar), but it is common sense that more investors can afford $20,000 compared to those who can afford $60,000.Outcome #1:Ā If Tesla stays above $200 by the expiration date, the option seller just retains the premium mentioned above. The option seller will not be obligated to buy the shares.Outcome #2:Ā If Tesla goes below $200 by the expiration date, the option seller will be forced to buy 100 shares at $200, irrespective of where the stock trades at that time. Keeping the premium netted in mind, the average cost, in this case, will be $194 ($200 minus $6).Outcome #3:Ā As an option seller, one can \"buy to close\" anytime instead of waiting till the expiration date. That may be appealing to those who have the time and patience to play short-dated options many times over. But we typically let the option expire before choosing another chain (or another stock).Outcome #4: We will write in detail about this in a future article, but we wanted to mention this as many readers of the Amazon (AMZN)Ā articleĀ pointed out. An option seller can always roll into future dated options. That is, instead of getting out of the game entirely by following one of the first three outcomes above, you can close the current option and initiate a new chain with a different strike/expiration/premium combination as a single transaction. There are risks and advantages to this as we plan to describe later.Why $200 Looks attractive?Trend:Ā Apart from being a nice round number, $200 is about 20% below the current market price, a bear market by itself by definition. That is on top of the 36% already lost from highs, making $200 more than 50% off from highs. In our view, that is a compelling enough pullback for a company that still hasĀ many growth avenuesĀ in front of it.Valuation:Ā At $200, Tesla will be trading at a PEG ratio of less than 1. This is based on a forward multiple of 46 [$200 divided byĀ forward EPSĀ of $4.32] and theĀ five year expected growth rateĀ of 55%. As avid followers of Growth at Reasonable Price [GARP] would attest, a PEG of less than 1 makes a stock more attractive.Technical:Ā From a technical standpoint, $200 has historically offered plenty of support to the stock. As shown in the chart below, the stock has bounced off from $200 level at least five times in the last two years.TSLA Chart (Google Charts)Many ways to skin the catIf the $200 strike price and the 3% premium return don't appeal to you and if you are looking for a higher premium return, consider strike price like the one below. In this example, the options seller agrees to buy 100 shares of Tesla at $220 should the stock reach that by November 4th, while collecting a premium of about $11 per share. That's a much higher return of 5% return in a month, but the risk the seller takes here is that the strike price is just 10% away from the current market price. One more day like yesterday, and you may be obligated to buy the shares. That is not necessarily a good or bad thing. It just depends on what your priority is.TSLA Chain (Think or Swim)Be aware of your risks and choicesOnce again, please bear in mind that if your primary interest is in getting premiums, selling puts during down-trending markets may not be the best strategy. If the market blood bath continues, your stock may reach the strike price before you blink. However, if your interest is in acquiring the stock should things fall further, this is a wise strategy. The added income through premium does not hurt either. If you already hold at least 100 shares of Tesla, you may want to consider selling covered call if you understand that strategy. ThisĀ articleĀ explains some basics of it.ConclusionTesla is a volatile company. TSLA is a volatile stock. Tesla is led by a volatile man. And the market is volatile these days. That makes it a double-double-whammy. In such cases, we tend to prefer lower strike prices. If we do get assigned Tesla at the $200 strike price, we will be glad to hold it for the long term for the reasons mentioned above. But that's us. What is your opinion of Tesla here? Play safe.jetcityimageTesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) lost nearly 10% of its stock price recently after deliveries underwhelmed as Seeking Alpha has coveredĀ here. These are strange times for the stock market as companies that are worth a Trillion lose in oneday what most companies are not even worth in their lifetime. Keep in mind, Tesla lost nearly 10% on a day the market rebounded. If the recent sentiment prevails on Tesla (as we are betting), then the next few red days for the market will be much harder for Tesla longs. But, with such pain come opportunities for those who can stomach the wild rides.The stock is rebounding a bit in premarket due to the general market mood and the news that Cathy WoodĀ dippedĀ into the sell-off. But we strongly believe the next few days will provide some juicy opportunities for those willing to sell cash-secured puts. Tesla's recent stock split makes these transactions a lot easier for retail investors. Before the recent 3:1 split, selling a single contract for 100 shares would have required three times the capital to be set aside. Let us use the chain below as an example and see how things look now post-split.TSLA Option Chain (Think or Swim)Key data pointsStrike Price: $200Expiration Date: November 4th, 2022, exactly a month from today.Premium: $6/share, for a total of $600.In simple words, the put seller collects $600 immediately to buy 100 shares of Tesla at $200 if the stock reaches $200 or below by November 4th, 2022. Bear in mind that time decay is in favor of the option seller, meaning as days go by, the option values decline.What's the expected return and possible outcomes?Return:Ā The premium collected ($600) for setting aside $20,000 represents a 3% return for a month. This is a handy return anytime and even more so in the current market environment. At this time, the market assigns at 77.20% probability that Tesla remains above $200 by expiration on November 4th. To reiterate the impact of the recent stock split, the same transaction would have required $60,000 to be set aside as we'd have been talking about a $600 strike price. Granted, the premium returns would be higher (in dollar), but it is common sense that more investors can afford $20,000 compared to those who can afford $60,000.Outcome #1:Ā If Tesla stays above $200 by the expiration date, the option seller just retains the premium mentioned above. The option seller will not be obligated to buy the shares.Outcome #2:Ā If Tesla goes below $200 by the expiration date, the option seller will be forced to buy 100 shares at $200, irrespective of where the stock trades at that time. Keeping the premium netted in mind, the average cost, in this case, will be $194 ($200 minus $6).Outcome #3:Ā As an option seller, one can \"buy to close\" anytime instead of waiting till the expiration date. That may be appealing to those who have the time and patience to play short-dated options many times over. But we typically let the option expire before choosing another chain (or another stock).Outcome #4: We will write in detail about this in a future article, but we wanted to mention this as many readers of the Amazon (AMZN)Ā articleĀ pointed out. An option seller can always roll into future dated options. That is, instead of getting out of the game entirely by following one of the first three outcomes above, you can close the current option and initiate a new chain with a different strike/expiration/premium combination as a single transaction. There are risks and advantages to this as we plan to describe later.Why $200 Looks attractive?Trend:Ā Apart from being a nice round number, $200 is about 20% below the current market price, a bear market by itself by definition. That is on top of the 36% already lost from highs, making $200 more than 50% off from highs. In our view, that is a compelling enough pullback for a company that still hasĀ many growth avenuesĀ in front of it.Valuation:Ā At $200, Tesla will be trading at a PEG ratio of less than 1. This is based on a forward multiple of 46 [$200 divided byĀ forward EPSĀ of $4.32] and theĀ five year expected growth rateĀ of 55%. As avid followers of Growth at Reasonable Price [GARP] would attest, a PEG of less than 1 makes a stock more attractive.Technical:Ā From a technical standpoint, $200 has historically offered plenty of support to the stock. As shown in the chart below, the stock has bounced off from $200 level at least five times in the last two years.TSLA Chart (Google Charts)Many ways to skin the catIf the $200 strike price and the 3% premium return don't appeal to you and if you are looking for a higher premium return, consider strike price like the one below. In this example, the options seller agrees to buy 100 shares of Tesla at $220 should the stock reach that by November 4th, while collecting a premium of about $11 per share. That's a much higher return of 5% return in a month, but the risk the seller takes here is that the strike price is just 10% away from the current market price. One more day like yesterday, and you may be obligated to buy the shares. That is not necessarily a good or bad thing. It just depends on what your priority is.TSLA Chain (Think or Swim)Be aware of your risks and choicesOnce again, please bear in mind that if your primary interest is in getting premiums, selling puts during down-trending markets may not be the best strategy. If the market blood bath continues, your stock may reach the strike price before you blink. However, if your interest is in acquiring the stock should things fall further, this is a wise strategy. The added income through premium does not hurt either. If you already hold at least 100 shares of Tesla, you may want to consider selling covered call if you understand that strategy. ThisĀ articleĀ explains some basics of it.ConclusionTesla is a volatile company. TSLA is a volatile stock. Tesla is led by a volatile man. And the market is volatile these days. Teams at the San Mateo office were tasked with evaluating customer vehicle data related to the Autopilot driver-assistance features and performing so-called data labeling.About 200 workers were let go, according to one of the people. Many of the staff were data annotation specialists, and the roles included salaried and contract positions. The office had about 350 employees, some of whom were transferred to a nearby facility.Tesla didnāt immediately respond to a request for comment.The cuts are part of an effort to trim the ranks of salaried staffers as Tesla pulls back from a surge in hiring in the recent years. The company, now headquartered in Austin, Texas, had grown to about 100,000 employees globally as it built new factories in Austin and Berlin.Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk caught workers by surprise earlier this month when he said layoffs would be necessary in an increasingly shaky economic environment. He clarified in anĀ interviewĀ with Bloomberg that about 10% of salaried employees would lose their jobs over the next three months, though the overall headcount could be higher in a year.The EV market leaderās downsizing efforts have focused on areas that grew too quickly. Some human resources workers and software engineers are known to have been laid off, and in some cases, the cuts have hit employees who had worked at the company for just aĀ few weeks.Those affected by the latest move worked on one of the higher-profile features in Tesla vehicles. In job postings, Tesla has said that labeled data is the ācritical ingredient for training powerful Deep Neural Networks, which help drive the Tesla vehicles autonomously.ā Staffers in Buffalo, New York, and San Mateo spent hours labeling images for cars and the environment they navigate, such as street signs and traffic lanes.The stock tumbled 34% this year through Tuesdayās close, compared with a 20% decline in the SP 500 Index.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSLA":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":623,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
