Some of those trades unwound last week.</p>\n<p>\"We saw big drama playing out in some of the reflation trades,\" said Thanos Bardas, co-head of global investment-grade fixed income at Neuberger Berman.</p>\n<p>\"The market over-reaction was pretty evident,\" he said, adding that he expects cooler heads to prevail this week.</p>\n<p>Others also saw a reversal of some of those positions likely. Over the trailing year (through April 27, 2021), around 110 stocks with at least a $300 million market cap have declined by 20% (or more). Given the aforementioned big gains in the<b>S&amp;P 500</b>,<b>Dow Jones Industrial Average</b>, and<b>Nasdaq Composite</b>, this represents a huge underperformance.</p>\n<p>But according to analysts on Wall Street, some of these underperformers have a good chance to bounce back in a big way over the coming year. Based on consensus one-year price targets, the following three turnaround stocks offer upside ranging from 91% to as much as 104%.</p>\n<p>Sarepta Therapeutics: Implied upside of 91%</p>\n<p>Many of the worst-performing equities over the past year arebiotech stocks. With investors rolling the dice on future clinical outcomes, trial data announcements can yield wild price swings for drug developers. Shareholders of specialized drug developer<b>Sarepta Therapeutics</b>(NASDAQ:SRPT)learned this in January when shares of the company were halved in a day. But if Wall Street's one-year price target is correct, Sarepta could recoup most of its losses by gaining 91% from its April 27 close.</p>\n<p>Sarepta's bread and butter is its research in treating Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). DMD is an incurable disease diagnosed in children that leads to the destruction of muscle and causes premature death. To date, the company has had the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approve three of its gene-specific DMD treatments, which are designed to increase the production of dystrophin.</p>\n<p>However, themake-or-break treatmentin the company's pipeline is SRP-9001. This is an experimental treatment that utilizes an adeno-associated virus to deliver a gene to muscle tissue that \"programs\" for micro-dystrophin production.&nbsp; In other words, SRP-9001 would allow the company to treat a much larger percentage of DMD patients.</p>\n<p>The Part 1 data release of Study 102 evaluating SRP-9001 in DMD patients aged 4 to 7 is why the stock was halved in January. Although treated participants showed an increase in their North Star Ambulatory Assessment (NSAA) total score,it wasn't statistically significant. Sarepta, however, blamed this disappointment on fitness differences in its patients during the study and expects a much different outcome in the latter half of this study. Part 2 of Study 102 is, therefore, Sarepta's make-or-break DMD moment.</p>\n<p>Intercept Pharmaceuticals: Implied upside of 97%</p>\n<p>If you wanteven more upside potential, Wall Street would steer you toward small-cap<b>Intercept Pharmaceuticals</b>(NASDAQ:ICPT). Among the 4,000-plus securities with at least a $300 million market cap, it holds the distinction of being the absolute worst performer over the trailing year (down 75%). The only solace is that Wall Street's consensus price target would see Intercept gain 97% over the coming year.</p>\n<p>Similar to Sarepta, Intercept's future predominantly lies with one indication: nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH. NASH is a liver disease that affects between 2% and 5% of the U.S. adult population and has no FDA-approved cure. It can lead to fibrosis, liver cancer, and even death. It's been estimated that NASH represents a $35 billion treatment opportunity.</p>\n<p>Intercept is at the forefront of that opportunity, but it's not been without its hiccups. Experimental treatment obeticholic acid (OCA)met one of its two co-primary endpointsin the phase 3 Regenerate study -- a statistically significant reduction in liver fibrosis without a worsening in NASH. Only one met endpoint was needed to declare the trial a success.</p>\n<p>On the other hand, the highest dose (also the most effective) led to considerably higher instances of pruritus (itching) and trial discontinuation, relative to the placebo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Interceptreceived a Complete Response Letterfrom the FDA following its new drug application to supply additional safety data.</p>\n<p>If OCA were to be approved, even for a small subset of the sickest patients, it would represent a greater than $1 billion sales opportunity.</p>\n<p>It's also worth noting that OCA is already approved under the brand name Ocaliva as a treatment for primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). With Ocaliva's PBC sales expected to hit at least $325 million in 2021 (nearly half the company's market cap), investors look to begetting a shot at NASH success nearly for free.</p>\n<p>Inovio Pharmaceuticals: Implied upside of 104%</p>\n<p>Yet another biotech stock withbig-time upside potential, according to Wall Street, is<b>Inovio Pharmaceuticals</b>(NASDAQ:INO). Shares of the company have been clobbered recently, but are expected to rally by 104% to nearly $15 based on the consensus 12-month price target of analysts.</p>\n<p>For much of the past year, the promise and peril of Inovio have rested with its development of a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine. The company's candidate, INO-4800, achieved immunological responses in 38 of 38 patients in phase 1 studies and looked to be on track to be among the roughly six or so early contenders to bring a COVID-19 vaccine to market in the United States.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Inovio's phase 2 and 3 studies hit a snag. The FDA placed a partial clinical hold on both phases and requested additional information concerning INO-4800 and the company's Cellectra delivery device. Cellectra uses electrical impulses to open pores in cells to allow plasmids to enter. Though the partial hold on the phase 2 study was lifted, the company has yet to run an all-important phase 3 study and may choose to do so outside the United States. To top things off, the U.S. Department of Defense notified Inovio that it wouldno longer be providing funding for its phase 3 study.</p>\n<p>There are two very big problems here. First, Inovio is running out of time to become a major player in treating COVID-19. The U.S. vaccination campaign will likely be complete sometime in July, and major players like<b>Johnson &amp; Johnson</b>&nbsp;can produce up to 3 billion doses for the global market this year. As a reminder, J&amp;J's vaccine is a single-dose treatment.</p>\n<p>The other potential red flag isInovio's track record. The company may have an intriguing delivery device in Cellectra, as well as nearly a dozen unique compounds in clinical trials, but it's yet to have the FDA approve any of its experimental treatments in four decades.</p>\n<p>With a number of its studies partnered, it's always possible Inovio could turn itself around. All three of the market's major indexes have gained between 83% and 106% since hitting the bear-market bottom set on March 23, 2020.\nYet, not all stocks have participated in the rally. Over the trailing year (through April 27, 2021), around 110 stocks with at least a $300 million market cap have declined by 20% (or more). Given the aforementioned big gains in theS&P 500,Dow Jones Industrial Average, andNasdaq Composite, this represents a huge underperformance.\nBut according to analysts on Wall Street, some of these underperformers have a good chance to bounce back in a big way over the coming year. Based on consensus one-year price targets, the following three turnaround stocks offer upside ranging from 91% to as much as 104%.\nSarepta Therapeutics: Implied upside of 91%\nMany of the worst-performing equities over the past year arebiotech stocks. With investors rolling the dice on future clinical outcomes, trial data announcements can yield wild price swings for drug developers. Shareholders of specialized drug developerSarepta Therapeutics(NASDAQ:SRPT)learned this in January when shares of the company were halved in a day. But if Wall Street's one-year price target is correct, Sarepta could recoup most of its losses by gaining 91% from its April 27 close.\nSarepta's bread and butter is its research in treating Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). DMD is an incurable disease diagnosed in children that leads to the destruction of muscle and causes premature death. To date, the company has had the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approve three of its gene-specific DMD treatments, which are designed to increase the production of dystrophin.\nHowever, themake-or-break treatmentin the company's pipeline is SRP-9001. This is an experimental treatment that utilizes an adeno-associated virus to deliver a gene to muscle tissue that \"programs\" for micro-dystrophin production.  In other words, SRP-9001 would allow the company to treat a much larger percentage of DMD patients.\nThe Part 1 data release of Study 102 evaluating SRP-9001 in DMD patients aged 4 to 7 is why the stock was halved in January. Although treated participants showed an increase in their North Star Ambulatory Assessment (NSAA) total score,it wasn't statistically significant. Sarepta, however, blamed this disappointment on fitness differences in its patients during the study and expects a much different outcome in the latter half of this study. Part 2 of Study 102 is, therefore, Sarepta's make-or-break DMD moment.\nIntercept Pharmaceuticals: Implied upside of 97%\nIf you wanteven more upside potential, Wall Street would steer you toward small-capIntercept Pharmaceuticals(NASDAQ:ICPT). Among the 4,000-plus securities with at least a $300 million market cap, it holds the distinction of being the absolute worst performer over the trailing year (down 75%). The only solace is that Wall Street's consensus price target would see Intercept gain 97% over the coming year.\nSimilar to Sarepta, Intercept's future predominantly lies with one indication: nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH. NASH is a liver disease that affects between 2% and 5% of the U.S. adult population and has no FDA-approved cure. It can lead to fibrosis, liver cancer, and even death. It's been estimated that NASH represents a $35 billion treatment opportunity.\nIntercept is at the forefront of that opportunity, but it's not been without its hiccups. Experimental treatment obeticholic acid (OCA)met one of its two co-primary endpointsin the phase 3 Regenerate study -- a statistically significant reduction in liver fibrosis without a worsening in NASH. Only one met endpoint was needed to declare the trial a success.\nOn the other hand, the highest dose (also the most effective) led to considerably higher instances of pruritus (itching) and trial discontinuation, relative to the placebo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Interceptreceived a Complete Response Letterfrom the FDA following its new drug application to supply additional safety data.\nIf OCA were to be approved, even for a small subset of the sickest patients, it would represent a greater than $1 billion sales opportunity.\nIt's also worth noting that OCA is already approved under the brand name Ocaliva as a treatment for primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). Here were the main metrics from the report, compared to consensus data compiled by Bloomberg:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><p><b>Initial jobless claims, week ended April 24:</b>553,000 vs. 540,000 expected and an upwardly revised 566,000 during the prior week</p></li>\n <li><p><b>Continuing claims, week ended April 17:</b>3.660 million vs. 3.590 million expected and a downwardly revised 3.651 million during the prior week</p></li>\n</ul>\n<p>New jobless claims held below 600,000 for a third straight week, dipping to the lowest level since mid-March 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic dealt a major blow to the U.S. economy. During the comparable week last year, new weekly jobless claims totaled nearly 3.5 million.</p>\n<p>Though headline new claims have been on the decline, an elevated number of Americans have still been sidelined from the labor market. More than 16.5 million Americans were still receiving unemployment benefits across all programs as of mid-April, for a decrease of nearly 1 million from the previous week. That included more than 12 million Americans on the federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, which both expire in September.</p>\n<p>But with the economic recovery now well under way, an emergent concern has become the paucity of qualified workers to fill open roles, according to many reports. The Federal Reserve'slatest Beige Book for April noted that\"hiring remained a widespread challenge, particularly for low-wage or hourly workers, restraining job growth in some cases.\"</p>\n<p>\"A growing number of employers report struggling to find qualified workers, particularly for entry level or lower wage positions,\" Bankrate senior economic analyst Mark Hamrick said in an email. \"The hard-hit leisure and hospitality sector, including bars and restaurants, appears to be ground zero for this challenge.\"</p>\n<p>Still, the overall data have pointed to a strongly positive trend in the job market's recovery trajectory. TheConference Board's April consumer confidence surveyreleased earlier this week showed a labor market differential – or difference between those saying jobs are \"plentiful\" versus those characterizing them as \"hard to get\" – that jumped significantly to 24.7 from 8.0 in March. And theoverall consumer confidence index rose to the highest level since February 2020, suggesting consumers were feeling better about economic prospects and might be more apt to go out and spend and stimulate even further hiring as reopenings took place.</p>\n<p>State-by-state unemployment</p>\n<p>By state, Texas accounted for a significant portion of the drop in new jobless claims last week, with initial filings in the state dropping by nearly 20,000 on a seasonally unadjusted basis. Wisconsin also posted a notable decline of nearly 8,000 new claims, and Georgia saw a drop of nearly 7,000.</p>\n<p>On the other hand, Virginia posted the largest increase in unadjusted new claims at more than 29,000, bringing total new filings in the state to about 43,000 last week. Michigan, which has been contending with a spike in COVID-19 cases this month, saw new filings rise by 7,200 to about 30,000.</p>\n<p>And other states remained the leaders in terms of their insured unemployment rates, or ratio of individuals receiving unemployment insurance to the total population. Nevada again posted the greatest insured unemployment rate in the country at 5.9%, with this rate creeping higher for a second straight week. Connecticut's insured unemployment rate was the second highest at 5.3%, while Alaska's came in third at 4.9%. Retail sales have posted gains in just four months since the lockdown measures took hold last year, the most recent being a 5.3% gain for January.</p><p>If sales rise as anticipated, that would be a good indication that the latest round of $1,400 direct checks are making their way into the economy, providing the stimulus intended by the White House. A miss may indicate that the money is being channeled to other avenues, such as savings or asset purchases. The New York Fed said last week that 42 cents of every stimulus dollar were being saved, while 25% of funds are being spent and the rest is being used to pay down debt.</p><p>Reflation trade: For the stock market, a strong retail sales number could kick-start the reflation trade that favors cyclicals, which has lost steam of late. Despite a number of market-moving events, the S&amp;P(NYSEARCA:SPY)has struggled to gain traction in either direction and is down 0.1% for the week.</p><p>“The reflation trade has been taking a spring break,” says UBS Global Wealth Management CIO Mark Haefele. “We believe investors should continue to position for reflation” as vaccinations roll out and economies recover, he adds, according to Bloomberg. Financials(NYSEARCA:XLF), Industrials(NYSEARCA:XLI)and Energy(NYSEARCA:XLE)are likely to outperform.</p><p>Barclays strategist Emmanuel Cau says value is attractive as a hedge to overheating, but he's less positive on leisure, food retail and autos.</p><p>Economy accelerating, but still moderate: The Fed's Beige Book, out yesterday, said the U.S. economy is accelerating to a moderate pace, while some of the sectors hit hardest by the pandemic are showing signs of recovery.</p><p>\"Reports on tourism were more upbeat, bolstered by a pickup in demand for leisure activities and travel which contacts attributed to spring break, an easing of pandemic-related restrictions, increased vaccinations, and recent stimulus payments among other factors,\" the report said.</p><p>Economic growth and consumer spending \"accelerated over the last 6 weeks and pent-up demand for leisure activity and travel are starting to materialize,\" DataTrek Research writes. \"Inflation has picked up and companies face both labor shortages and supply chain disruptions. In the end, we continue to agree with the Fed that near-term inflation is transitory rather than structural, so we don’t think Chair Powell will view these inflationary pressures as a major red flag.\"</p><p>\"Moreover, the latest Fed Beige Book reports continue to show employers’ challenge of pulling workers back into the labor force,\" DataTrek adds. \"That will take time as vaccines roll out and childcare becomes more accessible, factors that are out of Chair Powell’s control. That’s why he and the Fed continue to signal holding rates near zero through at least 2022 to let the economy run hot enough to achieve their dual mandate.\"</p><p><b>ARK Invest snaps up Coinbase</b></p><p>ARK Investment Management bought shares of newly-public Coinbase Global(NASDAQ:COIN)for three different funds, while selling some of its Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA)holdings.</p><p>Cathie Wood bought 89,589 shares of Coinbase for the ARK Fintech Innovation ETF(NYSEARCA:ARKF). She bought 512,535 shares of the crypto trading platform for the flagship ARK Innovation ETF(NYSEARCA:ARKK). And she added 147,081 COIN shares to the ARK Next Generation Internet ETF(NYSEARCA:ARKW). That was about $246M worth of Coinbase shares.</p><p>\"There are going to be great opportunities from now and five years to buy (Coinbase) on dips,\" Wood told Bloomberg. Economists, on average, are looking for a strong rebound, with sales rising 5.9%, compared with a 3% drop in February. Core retail sales, which exclude autos, are forecast to rise 5%, reversing a 2.7% decline the month before. Retail sales have posted gains in just four months since the lockdown measures took hold last year, the most recent being a 5.3% gain for January.If sales rise as anticipated, that would be a good indication that the latest round of $1,400 direct checks are making their way into the economy, providing the stimulus intended by the White House. A miss may indicate that the money is being channeled to other avenues, such as savings or asset purchases. The New York Fed said last week that 42 cents of every stimulus dollar were being saved, while 25% of funds are being spent and the rest is being used to pay down debt.Reflation trade: For the stock market, a strong retail sales number could kick-start the reflation trade that favors cyclicals, which has lost steam of late. Despite a number of market-moving events, the S&P(NYSEARCA:SPY)has struggled to gain traction in either direction and is down 0.1% for the week.“The reflation trade has been taking a spring break,” says UBS Global Wealth Management CIO Mark Haefele. “We believe investors should continue to position for reflation” as vaccinations roll out and economies recover, he adds, according to Bloomberg. That doesn't include flying cars, a market sector that alone could be worth $1.3 trillion, Fletcher told Reuters.</p>\n<p>On a recent video chat, Fletcher counted silently before answering how many ventures her team is shepherding. “Just under 20,” she said.</p>\n<p>The fact that GM is now incubating its own startups — with its corporate venture arm investing in dozens more — underscores Chief Executive Mary Barra's sweeping effort to remake the largest U.S. carmaker. The goal is to become a diversified purveyor of mobility services - the automotive equivalent of Apple, with revenue that rolls in monthly or quarterly from software and services long after the initial product is sold.</p>\n<p>For legacy automakers such as GM, Volkswagen and others attempting to overhaul and transform their businesses, that task is daunting, according to Evangelos Simoudis, author and adviser on corporate innovation strategy.</p>\n<p>“The technologies incorporated in the software-defined vehicle will require areas of expertise that <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> routinely finds in technology companies rather than in automakers,\" he said.</p>\n<p>Barra's push to transform GM's century-old business model is already having a significant impact - even though the first of a new generation of electric vehicles she has promised is still months from launch.</p>\n<p>GM returned $24 billion to shareholders in dividends and stock buybacks between 2014, when Barra took over, and early 2020. But those buybacks were suspended indefinitely when the pandemic hit last spring.</p>\n<p>Now, Barra told Reuters, the company has more productive uses for its money: Investing in electric vehicles and expansion of business lines that promise recurring revenue streams.</p>\n<p>GM's new ventures could add tens of billions to the future revenue, Barra said, and push operating profit margins above the current 8% it achieved in 2020, and the 10% it has targeted long term.</p>\n<p>“We have very significant growth opportunities and different margin opportunity initiatives to invest in,” she said in a video interview.</p>\n<p>Barra's shift from stock buybacks to investing in recurring revenue services, coupled with a drive to make GM an all-EV company by 2035, has achieved in <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> year what a decade of cost cuts and cash returns to shareholders could not.</p>\n<p>GM's share price over the past six months has broken out of the range it was stuck in since the company's post-bankruptcy IPO in 2010. GM shares hit a post-2010 high of $62.23 on March 18 and are up nearly 50% for the year.</p>\n<p>Still, GM's $90 billion market cap lags Tesla Inc's $600 billion valuation by a wide margin, reflecting doubts among investors that a 113-year-old Detroit manufacturer can keep up with an 18-year-old Silicon Valley company that has no technology or workforce legacy burdens to slog through.</p>\n<p>“I understand why people may be skeptical (of GM) because this is a company where we have seen revolutions being announced over the last half century and for some reasons it wasn't authentic,” says Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a dean of leadership programs at the Yale School of Management.</p>\n<p>Barra, he said, \"has the authenticity and legitimacy to pull it off in a way that a lot of other people wouldn't.\"</p>\n<p>Barra's effort to remake GM's business relies on an executive corps that mixes long-time GM managers like herself - Barra has worked at the company for 40 years - and recent recruits from outside the auto industry.</p>\n<p>“We're marrying people who really understand the auto business with people who understand these other businesses that we think are growth opportunities,” Barra said.</p>\n<p>A new venture that combines several aspects of GM's approach is BrightDrop, a unit that will provide electric vans and related hardware to commercial delivery firms, starting with FedEx, along with support services from fleet management to predictive analytics.</p>\n<p>GM rival Ford Motor Co is introducing its own electric delivery van and expanding support services to defend its leading share of the U.S. commercial vehicle market of more than 40%.</p>\n<p>BrightDrop, one of the first “graduates” of Fletcher's innovation incubator, started life less than two years ago as an idea initially dubbed Smart Cargo.</p>\n<p>Fletcher's team started incubating Smart Cargo in September 2019, about the same time another GM group was working on the company's future electric vehicle portfolio. The \"big idea\" - marrying an electric van with the software- and data-driven delivery services business - was hatched in February 2020.</p>\n<p>The enterprise gained additional traction in late 2020, when GM recruited longtime tech entrepreneur Travis Katz to become BrightDrop's president and CEO.</p>\n<p>Ultimately, GM's leadership wants BrightDrop to operate independently and cultivate \"outside ideas and new ways of thinking,\" Katz told Reuters.</p>\n<p>\"We expect BrightDrop to be a very big and very profitable business,\" he added. Eventually, \"there will be a lot of learnings from the BrightDrop experience that will flow back into GM.\"</p>\n<p>Barra also is building GM's long-standing OnStar telematics business into a platform for selling insurance and other services that can be delivered over the air.</p>\n<p>Santiago Chamorro, head of global connected services, has expanded OnStar's safety and security portfolio with new products and services incubated in-house, including OnStar Insurance, mobile safety app Guardian and Vehicle Insights, a data analytics platform for commercial fleet managers.</p>\n<p>Insurance, a new arena for GM, is led by outside hire Andrew Rose, who previously worked for auto insurance powers Progressive and Britain's Admiral Group.</p>\n<p>Rose says GM dealers could offer policies to owners when they buy or lease a vehicle. Whether the Fed's policy is similarly auspicious for home buyers or people looking to refinance their existing mortgages remains to be seen.</p><p>Since the start of the year, the benchmark rate on the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage has risen more than 40 basis points, according to data from Freddie Mac.</p><p>As of Thursday  reported.
