Based on data provided by Bespoke, stronger-than-average returns over multiple time periods tend to follow when the index jumps more than 2% to a new peak. \n</p>\n<p>\n     As highlighted in the chart below, the tech-friendly Nasdaq historically has climbed 3.7% one month following such a rally, with above-average gains also seen in the following three-month, six-month and one-year periods. To help prove the point, the Nasdaq rose 0.5% to another record close on Tuesday, while the S&amp;P 500 index SPX lagged, with a fractional loss. \n</p>\n<p>\n     BESPOKE INVESTMENT GROUP \n</p>\n<p>\n     The Nasdaq&#39;s record high reached on Monday was its 21st of 2026, but just the first since early June, according to Dow Jones Market Data. While there are concerns about the lack of participation in the market&#39;s latest rally, and about the negative effect of rising interest rates on stocks, there are some fundamental reasons that back up the upbeat outlook from Bespoke&#39;s data. \n</p>\n<p>\n     The artificial-intelligence trade, which has been behind the latest push higher in tech stocks, will probably continue to have &#34;some legs through next year&#34; on the back of tremendous spending on infrastructure for the buildout of AI, said Mona Mahajan, head of investment strategy at Edward Jones, in a phone interview on Tuesday. The stock market stands to benefit from a broadening of the AI trade on productivity gains, she said. \n</p>\n<p>\n     And in Mahajan&#39;s view, rather than be a negative for the market, the Federal Reserve&#39;s interest-rate hike this month was just part of some mid-cycle adjustments the Fed is making to its policy rate, rather than an aggressive series of hikes. And that might actually prove to be a positive for the market. More than 510 million shares worth about $84 billion changed hands, even though SpaceX is ‌currently unprofitable and generated only a fraction of the revenue brought in by similarly valued tech giants.</p><p>The launch was smoother than many observers expected, with trading kicking off late on Friday morning without the hiccups that had marred Facebook&#39;s debut in 2012. SpaceX shares ended the day at $160.95 a share to bring its value to $2.1 trillion. The gain pushed SpaceX&#39;s market value past <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AVGO\">Broadcom</a>, with <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMZN\">Amazon</a> next in line at $2.6 trillion.</p><p>The trade capped off a lead-up fraught with anxiety over the Nasdaq exchange&#39;s ability to handle the launch, particularly after a recent swoon in technology shares raised concerns about stratospheric gains in AI-linked names. Sequoia Capital&#39;s investment is worth over $20 billion at the IPO price, a person familiar with the ‌matter told Reuters.</p><p>At $75 ⁠billion, the IPO&#39;s proceeds were more than double those of Saudi Aramco&#39;s record-setting 2019 IPO.</p><p>SpaceX&#39;s valuation could rise further should underwriters exercise their right to sell additional shares, a decision typically made within 30 days after the offering.</p><p>“Seeing the company that I joined when it was just some sketches on paper become this valuable is almost surreal,&#34; said Tom Mueller, a founding SpaceX employee who spent 18 years at the company and a shareholder, who is now CEO of Impulse Space, a spacecraft startup.</p><p>An estimated 4,000 current or former SpaceX employees will become millionaires based on the value of their SpaceX shares, according to Hill.com.</p><p>Although SpaceX&#39;s lack of profitability makes it ineligible to join the S&amp;P 500, its expected fast-track inclusion in the Nasdaq 100 will soon make it a major holding for passive funds and ETFs that track ⁠the index, creating a fresh source of demand for its shares.</p><p>It will take about a month before SpaceX gets added to that index under Nasdaq&#39;s new fast-entry rules, as opposed to a typical wait of as much as a year.</p><p>Some analysts expect SpaceX&#39;s debut to trigger a reshuffling of investor portfolios, creating selling pressure on other technology heavyweights as funds rotate into the stock. Here’s what investors want to know.</span></p><p>First Republic Bank’s $30 billion injection from America’s biggest banks to help shore up confidence in the California-based lender and the overall U.S. banking system isn’t yet a mission accomplished.</p><p>U.S. stocks continued to slide on Friday, with shares of financials under sharp pressure overall, but with shares of First Republic down 33.8%, or 81% on the year so far, according to FactSet.</p><p>“I think one of the reasons why First Republic is down today has nothing to do with the fact that people are still concerned about if it is going to go under,” said Mark Stoeckle, CEO and senior portfolio manager at Adams Funds.</p><p>“Investors are trying to wrap their heads around what it means for its business model and for earnings,” Stoeckle said, particularly with lenders and other financial institutions forced to recalibrate in the wake of the Federal Reserve’s aggressive pace of interest rate hikes.</p><p>“We are only a week into this,” Stoeckle said. “What it’s going to take is time.”</p><p>Higher rates have resulted in some $620 billion of unrealized losses at U.S. banks, as “safe,” low-coupon Treasury and agency mortgage securities from 2020 and 2021 have eroded in value as yields have risen.</p><p>Another factor has been depositors migrating cash into today’s higher yielding Treasurys for income, including the 2-year about a week ago hit 5%, before it pulled back to 3.8%.</p><h2>Fear of unknown risks</h2><p>Wild swings in bank stocks this week and in Treasury yields,as well as jitters about whether the Federal Reserve will keep raising its policy interest rate had investors navigating one of the worst weeks of volatility since the 2008 global financial crisis.</p><p>“Many market participants have only experienced a systemic credit crunch once in their professional careers, and the ghost of the financial crisis and the Covid-19 market meltdown are their only historical comparisons,” said Steven Ricchiuto, U.S. chief economist at Mizuho Securities, in a Friday note.</p><p>Ricchiuto cautioned against being “too hasty to draw parallels,” but also said it doesn’t mean there are “no real consequences” in financial markets following the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, and emergency funding this week obtained by Credit Suisse and First Republic.</p><p>He expects liquidity in the system to be reduced, consolidation in the banking system and for banks to clean up “their balance sheets of bad assets while raising additional capital.”</p><p>Mike Mullaney, director of global market research at Boston Partners, said investors also will be keeping a close eye on how much banks end up relying on Fed facilities for liquidity.</p><p>Borrowing at the Fed’s discount window rose to $153 billion in the past week through Wednesday, an record high, “but below 2009 levels as a share of aggregate U.S. bank deposits,” according to BofA Global.</p><p>Another $11.9 billion was borrowed through a new Bank Term Funding Program rolled out about a week ago by the central bank.</p><p>“There’s no question there’s been an increase in borrowing at the discount window, but most of that is the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.,” Mullaney said, adding that’s likely related to their takeover of recently failed banks.</p><p>“The wild card is the unknown,” Mullaney said. “We just don’t know if there are other SVBs lurking out there.”</p><p>Another source of anxiety is what the Fed will do with interest rates at its meeting next week on March 21-22.</p><p>It has been a volatile for traders in fed funds futures, but as of Friday, they were pricing in about a 70% chance of a 25 basis point hike to the Fed’s policy rate to a 4.75%-5% range.</p><p>“I will say this, the important question is: What does the Fed do next week if they don’t hike rates,” Mullaney said. “What’s the message they send if they don’t? Here’s what investors want to know.</span></p><p>First Republic Bank’s $30 billion injection from America’s biggest banks to help shore up confidence in the California-based lender and the overall U.S. banking system isn’t yet a mission accomplished.</p><p>U.S. stocks continued to slide on Friday, with shares of financials under sharp pressure overall, but with shares of First Republic down 33.8%, or 81% on the year so far, according to FactSet.</p><p>“I think one of the reasons why First Republic is down today has nothing to do with the fact that people are still concerned about if it is going to go under,” said Mark Stoeckle, CEO and senior portfolio manager at Adams Funds.</p><p>“Investors are trying to wrap their heads around what it means for its business model and for earnings,” Stoeckle said, particularly with lenders and other financial institutions forced to recalibrate in the wake of the Federal Reserve’s aggressive pace of interest rate hikes.</p><p>“We are only a week into this,” Stoeckle said. “What it’s going to take is time.”</p><p>Higher rates have resulted in some $620 billion of unrealized losses at U.S. banks, as “safe,” low-coupon Treasury and agency mortgage securities from 2020 and 2021 have eroded in value as yields have risen.</p><p>Another factor has been depositors migrating cash into today’s higher yielding Treasurys for income, including the 2-year about a week ago hit 5%, before it pulled back to 3.8%.</p><h2>Fear of unknown risks</h2><p>Wild swings in bank stocks this week and in Treasury yields,as well as jitters about whether the Federal Reserve will keep raising its policy interest rate had investors navigating one of the worst weeks of volatility since the 2008 global financial crisis.</p><p>“Many market participants have only experienced a systemic credit crunch once in their professional careers, and the ghost of the financial crisis and the Covid-19 market meltdown are their only historical comparisons,” said Steven Ricchiuto, U.S. chief economist at Mizuho Securities, in a Friday note.</p><p>Ricchiuto cautioned against being “too hasty to draw parallels,” but also said it doesn’t mean there are “no real consequences” in financial markets following the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, and emergency funding this week obtained by Credit Suisse and First Republic.</p><p>He expects liquidity in the system to be reduced, consolidation in the banking system and for banks to clean up “their balance sheets of bad assets while raising additional capital.”</p><p>Mike Mullaney, director of global market research at Boston Partners, said investors also will be keeping a close eye on how much banks end up relying on Fed facilities for liquidity.</p><p>Borrowing at the Fed’s discount window rose to $153 billion in the past week through Wednesday, an record high, “but below 2009 levels as a share of aggregate U.S. bank deposits,” according to BofA Global.</p><p>Another $11.9 billion was borrowed through a new Bank Term Funding Program rolled out about a week ago by the central bank.</p><p>“There’s no question there’s been an increase in borrowing at the discount window, but most of that is the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.,” Mullaney said, adding that’s likely related to their takeover of recently failed banks.</p><p>“The wild card is the unknown,” Mullaney said. “We just don’t know if there are other SVBs lurking out there.”</p><p>Another source of anxiety is what the Fed will do with interest rates at its meeting next week on March 21-22.</p><p>It has been a volatile for traders in fed funds futures, but as of Friday, they were pricing in about a 70% chance of a 25 basis point hike to the Fed’s policy rate to a 4.75%-5% range.</p><p>“I will say this, the important question is: What does the Fed do next week if they don’t hike rates,” Mullaney said. “What’s the message they send if they don’t?
