Most electric vehicle stocks popped more than 10% yesterday, with Lordstown rallying 50% and Rivian surging 21%.To be sure, these huge rallies come on the heels of some major declines across the whole EV sector. Still, sales of electric vehicles across the globe continue to roar higher, and many of these companies are growing rapidly. This is all leading investors to ask: Is this the start of a major EV stock comeback? We think it could be. Here’s why.Rivian and Lordstown Reestablish Confidence in Electric Vehicle StocksEV stocks didn’t drop because electric vehicles stopped selling. Sales of electric vehicles in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2022 rose 60% year-over-year:Yet EV stocks dropped big in early 2022. Amid persistent supply chain disruptions and parts shortages, investors lost confidence in major EV players’ ability to hit production targets. But that confidence was reestablished yesterday, partly because of a positive business update from Lordstown. But it was mostly thanks to a great quarterly earnings report from Rivian.Late Tuesday night, Lordstown said that it had closed the sales of one of its manufacturing facilities to Foxconn. The sale injects $230 million onto Lordstown’s balance sheets. That’s critical — Lordstown was on the cusp of running out of cash. But with this new capital infusion, the company now has enough liquidity to commence commercial production in quarter three. In other words, Lordstown will hit its 2022 delivery targets — confidence reestablished.Meanwhile, Rivian provided an excellent business update on Tuesday afternoon as well. The company said that despite huge supply chain challenges, it’s on track to hits its 25,000-vehicle production target for 2022. Pre-orders are also ramping nicely, with the latest number at 90,000 reservations. In other words, Rivian will hit its 2022 delivery targets — confidence reestablished. This confidence boost at two EV manufacturing startups was good enough to light a fire under the entire industry. We don’t think that fire is going to die out anytime soon. We see electric vehicle stocks soaring from here into the end of the year.EV Stocks Are Wiped Out and Due for a Big ReboundPersistent supply chain concerns and fears about waning auto demand in a slowing economy have plagued the EV industry. And as such, electric vehicle stocks have been crushed so far in 2022.Now, though, they’re completely washed out — and due for a big rebound rally.Rivian, for example, was trading at 1X book value and 3X forward sales heading into its earnings report. That’s wild. This is a company that’s projected to grow sales by more than 3,000% this year, 250% in 2023, 110% the year after and 55% the year after that. And it was trading for just 1X book value and 3X forward sales!Talk about a bargain. But, as many seasoned investors will tell you, just because a stock is a bargain doesn’t mean it’s a buy. Cheap stocks can stay cheap for a long time. You need a catalyst to bring them back to life.Well, yesterday, we got that catalyst.EV makers — Rivian, in particular — are on track to hit 2022 targets, despite all the macroeconomic headwinds. This confirmation catalyst converged on dirt-cheap valuations across the sector and sparked some huge rallies in EV stocks. These rallies have some major runway ahead.Indeed, we think Rivian stock can more than double from current levels in a hurry. But Rivian isn’t even our favorite stock to buy for this huge EV comeback. The Final Word on Electric Vehicle StocksWe believe that the company with the best battery technology is going to win the electric vehicle arms race. After all, the quality of the battery determines everything about an EV. It dictates how far it can drive, how long it can last, how quickly it can recharge. The battery even affects how fast it can go.When it comes to EVs, the battery is everything. Therefore, the company that makes the best EV battery will make the best EV — and sell the most. And ultimately, it will emerge the winner of the electric vehicle arms race.Rivian makes a great battery. That’s why RIVN is a great EV stock to buy.But Rivian doesn’t make the best battery.Instead, that title is reserved for another tiny EV maker — one that could de-throne Tesla. And that company is the best EV stock to buy today.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"RIVN":0.9,"RIDE":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2407,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9020848036,"gmtCreate":1652615070825,"gmtModify":1676535129188,"author":{"id":"3572907184723637","authorId":"3572907184723637","name":"ccgcc","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d47d167de56d845089589ac7a6f13ddc","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3572907184723637","idStr":"3572907184723637"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Yes when time is right","listText":"Yes when time is right","text":"Yes when time is right","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9020848036","repostId":"2235748594","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2235748594","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1652578501,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2235748594?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-05-15 09:35","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Should You Buy the S&P 500's 4 Worst-Performing 2022 Stocks?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2235748594","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"The sellers seem to have overshot their targets with certain stocks, pricing in a scenario that's unlikely to happen.","content":"
\n
If you're a bargain-shopping kind of investor, there are certainly plenty of stocks on sale here. The S&P 500 (^GSPC 2.39%) is down nearly 19% year to date, while many of its constituents are dramatically deeper in the red.Beaten-down prices alone aren't enough of a reason to start scooping up stocks though, no matter how big their pullbacks might be. A company still has to be a name worth owning for the long haul, regardless of its price. And, that's a tough thing to figure out for the S&P 500's four worst performers for 2022 so far. What went wrongIf you're wondering, the biggest losers among the S&P 500's tickers so far this year are PayPal (PYPL 6.11%), Align Technology (ALGN 6.16%), Etsy (ETSY 4.80%), and Netflix (NFLX 7.65%), down 63%, 64%, 70%, and 75%, respectively, since the end of 2021. Ouch!At first blush, there's not a common thread. Netflix was crushed because, for the first time in its history, it lost subscribers. Align Technology (the name behind Invisalign dental braces) is struggling with the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. E-commerce platform Etsy is still trying to figure out what it is in a marketplace that includes competitors like Amazon, as well as empowering, DIY e-commerce platforms like those offered by Shopify. And PayPal? Despite continued revenue growth, investors still believe alternative payment options will chip away at its market share. There's more commonality to these setbacks, however, than there seems on the surface. With the exception of Align, investors were genuinely surprised these companies' smashing successes seen in 2020 and into 2021 -- in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic -- didn't persist into 2022.In other words, the wrong kind of surprise can wreak havoc on a stock. As for Align, while it never really thrived or suffered due to the coronavirus contagion (aside from logistical challenges linked to lockdowns), it's still dealing with the pandemic's fallout that's lasting far longer than anyone initially feared it might. Now the specter of an economic recession is prompting some consumers to rethink the immediate need for straighter teeth. Even so, it's an unexpected headwind that's rattling investors, turning them into sellers.OverzealousOn the surface, it seems somewhat irrelevant. While the market may not have seen these struggles brewing, the sell-offs these tickers have dished out still just reflect how these companies are performing right now.Except, that may not quite be the case.Yes, the direction these stocks have been moving jibes with the turn these companies' businesses have taken. The depth to which investors respond to lackluster results, however, can vary depending on expectations. If the market knows that so-so earnings are in the cards, the revelation of lackluster numbers doesn't send investors into a panic...when the selling really ramps up. If investors know to brace for bad news, then stocks are typically eased into a more appropriate price to reflect that reality.Image source: Getty Images. The alternative? Shock takes an exaggerated toll on a stock's price. That's largely what's happened here with these four names.Shock also distracts people from looking at the future rather than the past, when they should be doing just that.Perhaps most problematic, however, is that these sell-offs have reached extreme proportions only because stocks tend to move in a herd. Once the selling stampede starts, it's tough to stop it, even when lower prices may not be merited for most of them.Think bigger-pictureThe question remains, however: Should you buy the S&P 500's four worst-performing stocks of 2022 so far? This isn't always the case, but right now, yes -- these stocks are too sold-off for long-term, buy-and-hold investors interested in them to simply pass them up.While the pullbacks made enough sense, fear and panic have arguably taken more of a toll than they should have. Investors, as a crowd, are starting to think a little more level-headed though. While they know 2022 could be tough, they're also starting to see these aforementioned companies have viable plans to deal with it.Netflix, for instance, could launch an ad-supported version of its streaming service as early as this year, appealing to value-minded senses that will be heightened if the economy is weak. While PayPal may be facing a kind of competition it's never faced before, it's also innovating new ways to keep its place as the world's biggest digital payment middleman. Just last month, it unveiled a cash-back credit card, and late last year allowed e-commerce sites built by Wix to offer buy-now, pay-later loans to their customers. Align and Etsy are adjusting, too.Yet, none of these stocks' already-overblown sell-offs reflect these initiatives. And it's not just these four companies. A bunch of great stocks have been dragged lower than they deserve to be, for all the wrong reasons. That's not to suggest any of these names have hit their absolute bottom, mind you. They may still lose more ground. It is to say, however, now that the dust of the knee-jerk selling is starting to settle as we push past the hysteria, the market's starting to realize that at least with some stocks, the selling was more than a little overboard. That makes many of these names great buys now, even if we're not all the way through the turbulence just yet. Getting there while keeping its luxury-brand margins could prove challenging.

Lululemon said it aims to double its sales to $12.5 billion by 2026.

Lululemon’ roots are grounded in yoga, but it is stretching well beyond that now.

The athletic-apparel company said in an analyst presentation this past Wednesday that it aims to double its sales from $6.3 billion in its latest fiscal year to $12.5 billion by 2026. As ambitious as that seems, it may not be too far out of reach for Lululemon, which has doubled its revenue in three years. Analysts polled by FactSet were already penciling in a similar number.

Lululemon’s new targets come as the company expands its horizons. It recently launched women’s footwear, which the company says is selling well, and is branching out to apparel for golf, tennis and hiking. After making its foray into fitness equipment through the Mirror acquisition in 2020, the company is also setting its sights on paid memberships. Later this year, Lululemon plans to debut a $39-a-month membership program that will give its users access to digital fitness classes in Mirror’s library, as well as online classes from boutique studios such as Pure Barre and Y7. It will also include discounts to in-person classes offered by those studios.

There are some reasons to be cautious about Lululemon’s new plans, though, which come as the company anticipates a slowdown in women’s apparel sales growth. Lululemon’s market share in North American women’s apparel already doubled between 2015 and 2020, according to data from Euromonitor.

The real challenge will be pulling off the expansion while keeping its luxury brand-like margins intact. Wild success in footwear, for instance, would be a double-edged sword because it is a lower-margin category compared with apparel. And while comfortable work pants for men is a niche category with few sizable competitors, footwear, golf, tennis and hiking all place the company more directly in competition with the likes of Nike and Adidas. Meanwhile, a $39 membership fee seems steep compared with alternatives. Peloton’s membership for just its app costs just $12.99 a month, for example.

For now, Lululemon thinks it can deliver its growth target primarily from selling its core line of products to more customers, including international markets, which only accounted for about 15% of total revenue last fiscal year, and men’s, which accounts for a third of its sales. Mirror and footwear are only expected to make up roughly 5% of sales for the foreseeable future.

One reason Lululemon has been so successful in preserving its bottom line—besides the steep price tags—is its grass-roots marketing strategy. The days when $100-plus Lululemon pants practically sell themselves could be numbered; the company said in its presentation on Wednesday that it will move to a more “integrated” approach that will involve more earned and paid media, as well as sports partnerships. Furthermore, international markets, where Lululemon plans to quadruple its business by 2026, could also end up having a mixed impact on profitability. David Swartz, equity analyst at Morningstar, noted in a recent report that Lululemon’s expansion into Europe “has been slow and a drag on earnings.”

Lululemon is increasingly positioning itself as an all-encompassing fitness and sports brand, directly in Nike’s lane. Getting there won’t be easy or cheap.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Lululemon Spins Further Out of Yoga Orbit
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nLululemon Spins Further Out of Yoga Orbit\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-04-24 17:10 GMT+8 The Wall Street Journal\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Athletic-apparel retailer’s ambitious sales-growth targets look achievable. The items range from basic oat milk, to even ice cream and yogurt made from oat milk. According to its website, Oatly’s goal is “to make it easy for people to turn what they eat and drink into personal moments of healthy joy without recklessly taxing the planet’s resources in the process.”

Oatly confidentially filed for its IPO back in February, then officiallyset terms of the move last week. According to multiple outlets, Oatly will offer about 84.4 million American depositary shares (ADS) at between $15 and $17 per share. In total, the Oatly IPO could reach a $10.1 billion valuation, and the firm hopes to raise $1.1 billion.

Additionally, Oatly plans to trade on the Nasdaq exchange under the ticker “OTLY” and had nine lead underwriters for its IPO.

The majority shareholder

Oatly was founded in 1994 by Rickard Oste, a professor of food chemistry and nutrition in Sweden, and his brother Bjorn Oste. Working in Malmo, Sweden, they developed a way of processing a slurry of oats and water with enzymes to produce natural sweetness and a milk-like taste and consistency.

Oatly’s image benefited from a roster of celebrity investors, including Oprah Winfrey, Natalie Portman, Jay-Z’s Roc Nation company, and Howard Schultz, the former chief executive of Starbucks. All have some connection to the plant-based or healthy living movement.

The majority shareholder is a partnership between an entity owned by the Chinese government and Verlinvest, a Belgian firm that invests some of the wealth of the families that control the Anheuser-Busch InBev beer empire. Blackstone, the giant private equity firm, owns a little less than 8 percent in Oatly.

The company’s growth went into overdrive after Verlinvest bought a majority stake in 2016 via a joint venture with China Resources, a state-owned conglomerate with vast holdings in cement, power generation, coal mining, beer, retailing and many other industries. The new financing helped Oatly to expand in Europe and begin exporting to the United States and China, where many people cannot tolerate cow’s milk. China Resources’ involvement undoubtedly helped open doors in the Chinese market. Asia, primarily China, accounted for 18 percent of sales in the first quarter of 2021, and is growing at a rate of 450 percent a year, according to Oatly.

In Europe, there is growing alarm about Chinese investment in strategic industries like autos, batteries and robotics. The European Commission has begun erecting regulatory barriers to companies with financial links to the Chinese government. But so far no one has expressed fear that China will dominate the world’s supply of oat milk.

Just in case, Oatly’s prospectus gives it the option of listing in Hong Kong if the foreign ownership becomes a problem in the United States.

The Key Markets

Oat milk is part of a larger trend toward food that mimics animal products. So-called food tech companies like Beyond Meat have raised a little more than $18 billion in venture funding, according to PitchBook, which tracks the industry. Plant-based dairy, which in the United States includes brands like Ripple (made from peas) and Mooala (bananas), raised $640 million last year, more than double the amount raised a year earlier.

According to the Plant Based Foods Association and Good Foods Institute, plant-based-food sales reached $7 billion in 2020.

Consumer Insights data quoted in the prospectus says the plant-based milk category will grow 20% to 25% over the next three years.

Oatly is focused on its role in helping to transform the food industry in order to be better for the environment and meet the health needs of its customers. The company points out that substituting a cup of Oatly for a cup of cow’s milk reduces greenhouse gas emissions, land use and energy consumption.

Tastewise, which provides food and beverage data and intelligence, said in a December 2020 report that “plant-based everything” will be one of the top 10 U.S. trends for this year.

Oatly’s key markets are Sweden, Germany and the U.K., though its products were available in 60,000 retail stores and 32,200 coffee shops around the world as of December 31, 2020. Among the places where customers can find Oatly is Starbucks, where demand was so high there was a shortage soon after the coffee chain introduced beverages made with the item.

Oatly arrived in the U.S. in 2017. The company says it “focused on targeting coffee’s tastemakers, professional baristas at independent coffee shops” as a way to enter the market.”

By December 31, 2020, Oatly was in more than 7,500 retail shops and 10,000 coffee shops in the U.S. Revenue in 2020 totaled $100 million in the U.S.

Oatly can also be found in 11,000 coffee and tea shops in China, and at more than 6,000 retail and specialty shops across the country, including thousands of Starbucks locations.

Loss of Warning

In 2020, Oatly had revenue of $421.4 million, up from $204.0 million the year before. However, the company reported a loss of $60.4 million “reflecting our continued investment in production, brand awareness, new markets and product development,” the prospectus said.

Oatly is classified as an “emerging growth company,” which means it does not have to make the same disclosures required of bigger public companies. A business remains an emerging growth company until it reaches a number of milestones, including annual revenue of more than $1.07 billion.

Oatly warns that it has reported losses over the last “several” years and expects operating and capital expenses to rise “substantially.”

“Our expansion efforts may take longer or prove more expensive than we anticipate, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we may not succeed in increasing our revenue and margins sufficiently to offset the anticipated higher expenses,” the company said in its prospectus.

“We incur significant expenses in researching and developing our innovative products, building out our production and manufacturing facilities, obtaining and storing ingredients and other products and marketing the products we offer.”

The dairy market is highly competitive

Oatly acknowledged in its offering documents that it faces fierce competition, including from “multinational corporations with substantially greater resources and operations than us.”

That would include British consumer goods maker Unilever, which said last year that it aims to generate revenue of one billion euros, or $1.2 billion, by 2027 from plant-based substitutes for meat and dairy, for example Hellmann’s vegan mayonnaise or Ben & Jerry’s dairy-free ice cream. Unilever has not announced plans for a milk substitute.

Some industry analysts argue that Oatly’s size gives it an edge over these giants, allowing it to be more innovative than a corporate behemoth. Food start-ups are “younger and faster,” said Patrick Müller-Sarmiento, head of the consumer goods and retail practice at Roland Berger, a German consulting firm.

The established food giants also have a tougher time than newcomers convincing consumers that they are sincere about saving the planet, an important part of the oat milk sales pitch.

Mr. Müller-Sarmiento, the former chief executive of Real, a German chain of big box stores, said meat and dairy alternatives are not having trouble competing with Big Food for precious retail shelf space. “Retailers are urgently looking for new products,” he said.

Time was when Nestlé or Unilever would have simply acquired Oatly, just as they have gobbled up hundreds of other brands. But they would have trouble justifying the audacious $10 billion price that Oatly has set as the benchmark for its stock offering.

Nestlé’s answer was to develop its own milk substitute, Wunda, which the company unveiled this month and plans to sell initially in France, Portugal and the Netherlands. Made from a variety of yellow peas, Wunda is higher in protein than oat milk. Some nutritionists have said that oat milk and other dairy alternatives are a poor substitute for cow’s milk because they don’t have nearly as much protein.

Stefan Palzer, the chief technology officer at Nestlé, took issue with those who say a big company can’t move as fast as a bunch of Swedish foodies. A young team at Nestlé developed Wunda in nine months, including three months of market testing in Britain, Mr. Palzer said in an interview.

Nestlé was able to adapt existing production facilities to make Wunda, rather than building new factories like Oatly must do.

The company already had plant scientists who could identify the best kind of pea and food safety experts who could navigate the regulatory approval process, Mr. Palzer said.

The Wunda developers “could have any expert they wanted to have on the project,” Mr. Palzer said. “That enabled them to move at this speed.”

Nestlé already has dairy-free versions of Nesquik drinks and Häagen-Dazs ice cream and sells coffee creamers made from a blend of oat and almond milk using the Starbucks brand.
