One good way is to regularly invest meaningful sumsin the stock market, over a long period of time -- such as via a low-cost broad-market index fund.</p>\n<p>If you want to try to get to millionairehood sooner, you might try investing in some carefully chosen individual stocks -- perhaps in addition to investing in index funds. Zscaler</b></p>\n<p><b>Zscaler</b>(NASDAQ:ZS)offers security technology for companies using various cloud services, and has been named the leader in secure web gateways by research firm Gartner. It has been growing briskly, with its stock increasing in value by more than sixfold over only about three years, since the company debuted on the public market. In its most recent quarter, revenue grew by 55% year over year, while billings jumped 71%. The company, recently sporting a market value near $26 billion, \"reached a new milestone by surpassing 5,000 customers during the quarter, including 500 of the Global 2000.\" Between fiscal 2016 and 2020, revenue grew more than fivefold.</p>\n<p>Zscaler has a \"big, audacious goal\" of reaching 200 million users and 100 million workloads, and in a presentation&nbsp;for investors, outlined a handful of growth drivers, such as upselling to existing customers, an increased presence in Japan and Latin America, and continuing technological innovations.The company has excelledat retaining customers and, indeed, at increasing the average amount they spend.</p>\n<p>One concern about Zscaler for investors may be that it has been posting net losses, not net income, in recent years. But that's not unusual for younger, smaller companies. They tend to plow as many dollars as possible into furthering their growth.</p>\n<p><b>2. Datadog</b></p>\n<p>Software-as-a-service (SaaS)&nbsp;company<b>Datadog</b>(NASDAQ:DDOG)has been public for a shorter period than Zscaler. It debuted on the markets in September of 2019, closing at&nbsp;$37.55 per share on its first day, and it has more than doubled in value since then. Its market value recently sat at $27 billion.</p>\n<p>So what does the company do? In its own words, it's a \"monitoring and security platform for cloud applications,\" which helps companies</p>\n<blockquote>\n enable digital transformation and cloud migration, drive collaboration among development, operations, security and business teams, accelerate time to market for applications, reduce time to problem resolution, secure applications and infrastructure, understand user behavior, and track key business metrics.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Various applications have been added to its platform over time, making it even more powerful and attractive to potential customers, and more will be added. Its customers appear to be findinga lot to like in Datadog's offerings, as the company's retention rate was recently around 130%, suggesting not only that it retained most customers, but also that they increased their spending.</p>\n<p>Datadog is growing rapidly, with revenue tripling&nbsp;between fiscal 2018 and 2020. Like Zscaler, it'sposting losseswhile it invests in growth -- developing additional technologies, hiring more people, acquiring more customers, and ramping up its capabilities. Despite that, it'sgenerating free cash flow, which bodes well for its financial health.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f69bfcb5ba5d9c7e18673db94f759aa5\" tg-width=\"2000\" tg-height=\"1142\"></p>\n<p>IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.</p>\n<p><b>3. Palo Alto Networks</b></p>\n<p><b>Palo Alto Networks</b>(NYSE:PANW)isa global leader in cybersecurity, with a market value recently near $35 billion. Clearly, threats from cyberspace are not going away anytime soon, and companies can't afford to have their systems hacked into and their safeguards breached. Enter Palo Alto, with technology, programs, and even consulting services to help companies secure their data and workings.</p>\n<p>In the company's last reported quarter, revenue and billings jumped 25% and 22% year over year, respectively, topping management's previous guidance. Its growth drivers include its cloud-delivered security subscription offerings, which have gone from four to eight in just two years, and the newer, higher support level that it's offering customers -- \"Platinum Support.\"</p>\n<p>Palo Alto's artificial-intelligence-powered threat detection platform Cortex counts&nbsp;66% of the Fortune 100 among its customers, plus 35% of the Global 2000. Interestingly, the company notes that \"Cortex XDR's Behavioral Threat Protection instantly blocked a SolarStorm attack on Palo Alto Networks\" and it sees the SolarStorm attack as a growth driver, as it generated more than 1,000 assessment requests related to it. CEO Nikesh Arora noted ina conference call:</p>\n<blockquote>\n This will result in more awareness and focus on cybersecurity, which in all candor, is the need of the hour given the complete reliance on technology in these times. We expect that this attack will be a wake-up call to all enterprises to modernize cybersecurity and will serve as a net incremental tailwind, not just for us but also for the industry.\n</blockquote>\n<p>These three companies are not selling at bargain-basement prices. But each appears to have a rosy future ahead of it. Consider digging more deeply into any of the companies that interest you, and if you like what you think, you might start a position in one or more by buying a few initial shares, and then add to that position over time. Its reach and operating practices were such that Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said that when LTCM failed, “he had never seen anything in his lifetime that compared to the terror” he felt. LTCM was deemed “too big to fail,” and he engineered a bailout by 14 major U.S. financial institutions.</p>\n<p>Exactly a decade later, too much leverage by some of those very institutions, and the bursting of a U.S. real estate bubble, led to the near collapse of the U.S. financial system. Once again, big banks were deemed too big to fail and taxpayers came to the rescue.</p>\n<p>The trend? Every 10 years or so, and they all look different.&nbsp;Are we in the early stages of a new crisis now, with the blowup at the family office Archegos Capital Management LP?</p>\n<p>A family office, for the uninitiated, is a private wealth management vehicle for the ultra-wealthy. Here’s what I mean by ultra-wealthy: Consulting firm EY estimates there are some 10,000 family offices globally, but manage, says a separate estimate by market research firm Campden Research, nearly $6 trillion. That $6 trillion is likely far higher now given that it’s based on 2019 data.</p>\n<p><b>Unregulated money managers</b></p>\n<p>Here’s the potential danger. Family offices generally aren’t regulated. The 1940 Investment Advisers Act says firms with 15 clients or fewer don’t have to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission. What this means is that trillions of dollars are in play and no one can really say who’s running the money, what it’s invested in, how much leverage is being used, and what kind of counterparty risk may exist. (Counterparty risk is the probability that one party involved in a financial transaction could default on a contractual obligation to someone else.)</p>\n<p>This appears to be the case with Archegos. The firm bet heavily on certain Chinese stocks, including e-commerce player&nbsp;Vipshop Holdings&nbsp;Ltd.VIPS,-1.19%,U.S.-listed Chinese tutoring company&nbsp;GSX Techedu&nbsp;Inc.GSX,-10.63%and U.S. media companiesViacomCBS&nbsp;Inc.VIAC,-3.90%and&nbsp;Discovery&nbsp;Inc.DISCA,-3.86%,among others. Share prices have tumbled lately, sparking large sales — some $30 billion — by Archegos.</p>\n<p>The problem is that only about a third of that, or $10 billion, was its own money. We now know that Archegos worked with some of the biggest names on Wall Street, including&nbsp;Credit Suisse Group AGCS,+1.59%,UBS Group AGUBS,+1.01%,Goldman Sachs Group Inc.GS,-1.25%,&nbsp;Morgan StanleyMS,-0.28%,Deutsche Bank AGDB,+0.74%and Nomura Holdings Inc.&nbsp;NMR,+1.87%.</p>\n<p>But since family offices are largely allowed to operate unregulated, who’s to say how much money is really involved here and what the extent of market risk is? My colleague Mark DeCambre&nbsp;reported last week that Archegos’ true exposures to bad trades could actuallybe closer to $100 billion.</p>\n<p><b>Danger of counterparty risk</b></p>\n<p>This is where counterparty risk comes in. As Archegos’ bets went south, the above banks — looking at losses of their own — hit the firm with margin calls. Deutsche quickly dumped about $4 billion in holdings, while Goldman and Morgan Stanley are also said to have unwound their positions, perhaps limiting their downside.</p>\n<p>So is this a financial crisis? It doesn’t appear to be. Even so, the Securities and Exchange Commission has opened a preliminary investigation into Archegos and its founder, Bill Hwang.</p>\n<p>One peer, Tom Lee, the research chief of Fundstrat Global Advisors, calls Hwang one of the “top 10 of the best investment minds” he knows.</p>\n<p>But federal regulators may have a lesser opinion. In 2012, Hwang’s former hedge fund, Tiger Asia Management, pleaded guilty and paid more than $60 million in penalties after it was accused of trading on illegal tips about Chinese banks. The SEC banned Hwang from managing money on behalf of clients — essentially booting him from the hedge fund industry. So Hwang opened Archegos, and again, family offices aren’t generally aren’t regulated.</p>\n<p><b>Yellen on the case</b></p>\n<p>This issue is on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s radar. She said last week that greater oversight of these private corners of the financial industry is needed. The Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC), which she oversees, has revived a task force to help agencies better “share data, identify risks and work to strengthen our financial system.”</p>\n<p>Most financial crises end up with American taxpayers getting stuck with the tab. Gains belong to the risk-takers. But losses — they belong to us. To paraphrase Abe Lincoln, family offices — a multi-trillion dollar industry largely allowed to operate in the shadows in a global financial system that is more intertwined than ever — are of the super-wealthy, by the super-wealthy and for the super-wealthy. And no one else.</p>\n<p>The Archegos collapse may or may not be the beginning of yet another financial crisis. During the late 1980s, nearly a third of the nation’s savings and loan associations failed, ending with a taxpayer bailout — in 2021 terms — of about $265 billion.\nIn 1997-1998, financial crises in Asia and Russia led to the near meltdown of the largest hedge fund in the U.S. —Long-Term Capital Management(LTCM). Its reach and operating practices were such that Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said that when LTCM failed, “he had never seen anything in his lifetime that compared to the terror” he felt. LTCM was deemed “too big to fail,” and he engineered a bailout by 14 major U.S. financial institutions.\nExactly a decade later, too much leverage by some of those very institutions, and the bursting of a U.S. real estate bubble, led to the near collapse of the U.S. financial system. Once again, big banks were deemed too big to fail and taxpayers came to the rescue.\nThe trend? Every 10 years or so, and they all look different. Are we in the early stages of a new crisis now, with the blowup at the family office Archegos Capital Management LP?\nA family office, for the uninitiated, is a private wealth management vehicle for the ultra-wealthy. Here’s what I mean by ultra-wealthy: Consulting firm EY estimates there are some 10,000 family offices globally, but manage, says a separate estimate by market research firm Campden Research, nearly $6 trillion. That $6 trillion is likely far higher now given that it’s based on 2019 data.\nUnregulated money managers\nHere’s the potential danger. Family offices generally aren’t regulated. The 1940 Investment Advisers Act says firms with 15 clients or fewer don’t have to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission. What this means is that trillions of dollars are in play and no one can really say who’s running the money, what it’s invested in, how much leverage is being used, and what kind of counterparty risk may exist. (Counterparty risk is the probability that one party involved in a financial transaction could default on a contractual obligation to someone else.)\nThis appears to be the case with Archegos. The firm bet heavily on certain Chinese stocks, including e-commerce player Vipshop Holdings Ltd.VIPS,-1.19%,U.S.-listed Chinese tutoring company GSX Techedu Inc.GSX,-10.63%and U.S. media companiesViacomCBS Inc.VIAC,-3.90%and Discovery Inc.DISCA,-3.86%,among others. Share prices have tumbled lately, sparking large sales — some $30 billion — by Archegos.\nThe problem is that only about a third of that, or $10 billion, was its own money. We now know that Archegos worked with some of the biggest names on Wall Street, including Credit Suisse Group AGCS,+1.59%,UBS Group AGUBS,+1.01%,Goldman Sachs Group Inc.GS,-1.25%, Morgan StanleyMS,-0.28%,Deutsche Bank AGDB,+0.74%and Nomura Holdings Inc. NMR,+1.87%.\nBut since family offices are largely allowed to operate unregulated, who’s to say how much money is really involved here and what the extent of market risk is? My colleague Mark DeCambre reported last week that Archegos’ true exposures to bad trades could actuallybe closer to $100 billion.\nDanger of counterparty risk\nThis is where counterparty risk comes in. As Archegos’ bets went south, the above banks — looking at losses of their own — hit the firm with margin calls. Deutsche quickly dumped about $4 billion in holdings, while Goldman and Morgan Stanley are also said to have unwound their positions, perhaps limiting their downside.\nSo is this a financial crisis? It doesn’t appear to be. Even so, the Securities and Exchange Commission has opened a preliminary investigation into Archegos and its founder, Bill Hwang.\nOne peer, Tom Lee, the research chief of Fundstrat Global Advisors, calls Hwang one of the “top 10 of the best investment minds” he knows.\nBut federal regulators may have a lesser opinion. In 2012, Hwang’s former hedge fund, Tiger Asia Management, pleaded guilty and paid more than $60 million in penalties after it was accused of trading on illegal tips about Chinese banks. The SEC banned Hwang from managing money on behalf of clients — essentially booting him from the hedge fund industry. So Hwang opened Archegos, and again, family offices aren’t generally aren’t regulated.\nYellen on the case\nThis issue is on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s radar. She said last week that greater oversight of these private corners of the financial industry is needed. The Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC), which she oversees, has revived a task force to help agencies better “share data, identify risks and work to strengthen our financial system.”\nMost financial crises end up with American taxpayers getting stuck with the tab. Gains belong to the risk-takers. But losses — they belong to us. To paraphrase Abe Lincoln, family offices — a multi-trillion dollar industry largely allowed to operate in the shadows in a global financial system that is more intertwined than ever — are of the super-wealthy, by the super-wealthy and for the super-wealthy. And no one else.\nThe Archegos collapse may or may not be the beginning of yet another financial crisis. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.60% is lagging with a 1% drop as the shift toward cyclical stocks continues.</p><p>The big bull calls for this market remain scarce though, and that may be down to some disbelief, said Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist at money management and research firm The Leuthold Group.</p><blockquote>“I just can’t imagine that at that point, when, in some sense in this country, when we declare victory over COVID that we’re not going to feel a whole lot more giddy than we do right now sitting in my basement.”&nbsp;— Jim Paulsen, The Leuthold Group</blockquote><p>“There’s a lot of thought that people are too giddy, there’s too much optimism, sentiment is too strong, but I just can’t help but feel it’s going to be a lot stronger,” said Paulsen, in an interview on Monday with MarketWatch.</p><p>In our call of the day, he brushes away the naysayers, and looks ahead to the coming autumn, when almost everyone in the U.S. who wants a COVID-19 vaccine will get one, and we’ve got reopenings, re-employment and people “flush with stimulus” cash.</p><p>“I just can’t imagine that at that point, when, in some sense in this country, when we declare victory over COVID that we’re not going to feel a whole lot more giddy than we do right now sitting in my basement,” including growth better than 8% this year, Paulsen said. “So I think that sentiment is going to run through Main Street and Wall Street.”</p><p>Fundamentals go along with that, as he expects U.S. growth of better than 8% this year, among the strongest of the postwar era. Earnings are also expected to surge, with Wall Street forecasting a rebound for S&amp;P 500 earnings to $175 this year — Paulsen sees $200 as possible.</p><p>“And if it does, that means we’re selling on less than 20 times earnings right now on the S&amp;P 500, and probably broader markets are even better valuation,” he said. What he thinks is happening is that sentiment just can’t keep up with the better-and-better scenario unfolding.</p><p>“There’s not another period I can think of in postwar history where we effectively took the world economy to a Depression-era bust, and then within about a year…a postwar boom,” he said. And while rising bond yields — something to watch for Tuesday — hover over investors, Paulsen sees a “stepwise” move up to 2%.</p><p>For investors, he suggests continuing to steer toward economically sensitive areas, via cyclical, small cap and international stocks. He owns technology, but is underweight as sees some underperformance ahead. “But I don’t think it’s going to crater. I think it’s going to participate in this bull.”</p><p>Investors shouldn’t abandon the sector, because it has been such a domineering force throughout the globe. And down the road, he said tech companies, because they permeate so many sectors, may start to be categorized differently.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1c4d059b2a2272b5b365afd8aafaf2ba\" tg-width=\"1242\" tg-height=\"1096\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>What to avoid? Paulsen said he would be wary of healthcare, utilities, real-estate investment trusts, cash, bonds, gold. And yes he does see a correction likely, a big risk for this year.</p><p>“I think it might come later this year but I wouldn’t be shocked, starting right now,” he said. “And that’s the biggest risk this year and I don’t think that’s a cycle ender, it certainly is painful. And I think we’re going to get one of those.”</p><p><b>Yields are creeping up, Archegos lingers</b></p><p>Tech stocks are struggling to get a foothold in a holiday-shortened week, with futures for the Nasdaq-100 NQ00, -0.75% down. Those for the S&amp;P 500 ES00, -0.33% and Dow YM00, -0.11% are flat to higher. But the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury TMUBMUSD10Y, 1.762% is up to nearly 1.77%. The Case-Shiller home price index and a gauge of consumer confidence are the data ahead.</p><p>Score another for cryptocurrencies. U.S. customers of online payment provider PayPal PYPL, -2.22% can now purchase items with bitcoin BTCUSD, 3.26% and other digital assets.</p><p>European stocks and banks SXXP, 0.33% are getting a breather after Monday’s selloff, led by Credit Suisse CS, -11.50%. if any at all</b>- as the CFD is akin to a privately-arranged (i.e. off exchange and bespoke) futures contract where the differences in the settlement between the open and closing trade prices are cash-settled (there is no delivery of physical goods or securities with CFDs).</p>\n<p>What makes the situation worse is that<b>Archegos reportedly took positions in these CFDs with various prime brokers</b>- and because these positions are by their nature not centrally cleared or aggregated, this left prime broker X unaware of their client's exposures with prime broker Y... which in this case was huge.</p>\n<p>The leverage Hwang was given made him look like a trading genius as the various positions he took were pumped and pumped (and helped by gamma-squeezers) but now look like a reckless gambling fool as the bets collapsed.</p>\n<p>CFDs linked to stocks (with a gross market value of around $282 billion at end June 2020) are among bespoke derivatives that investors trade privately between themselves, or over-the-counter, instead of through public exchanges.<b>This is exactly the kind of hidden risk that amplified the losses during the 2008 financial crisis.</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ffab65c57ee35df93f6a6087e1136e5b\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"321\">AsBloombergnotes,<b>regulators have begun clamping down on CFDs in recent years because they’re concerned the derivatives are too complex and too risky for retail investors,</b>with the European Securities and Markets Authority in 2018&nbsp;restricting&nbsp;the distribution to individuals and capping leverage. In the U.S., CFDs are largely banned for amateur traders... but not for hedge fund managers who are \"sophisticated\"?</p>\n<p>But,<b>banks still favor them because they can make a large profit without needing to set aside as much capital versus trading actual securities</b>(driven to this opaque market as an unintended consequence of heavy regulation following the 2008 financial crisis).</p>\n<p>In the case of Archegos, there is very little transparency about Hwang’s trades, but market participants suggest his assets had grown to anywhere from $5 billion to $10 billion in recent years with<b>total exposure topping $50 billion</b>. In its most recent quarter, revenue grew by 55% year over year, while billings jumped 71%. The company, recently sporting a market value near $26 billion, \"reached a new milestone by surpassing 5,000 customers during the quarter, including 500 of the Global 2000.\" Between fiscal 2016 and 2020, revenue grew more than fivefold.</p>\n<p>Zscaler has a \"big, audacious goal\" of reaching 200 million users and 100 million workloads, and in a presentation&nbsp;for investors, outlined a handful of growth drivers, such as upselling to existing customers, an increased presence in Japan and Latin America, and continuing technological innovations.The company has excelledat retaining customers and, indeed, at increasing the average amount they spend.</p>\n<p>One concern about Zscaler for investors may be that it has been posting net losses, not net income, in recent years. But that's not unusual for younger, smaller companies. They tend to plow as many dollars as possible into furthering their growth.</p>\n<p><b>2. Datadog</b></p>\n<p>Software-as-a-service (SaaS)&nbsp;company<b>Datadog</b>(NASDAQ:DDOG)has been public for a shorter period than Zscaler. It debuted on the markets in September of 2019, closing at&nbsp;$37.55 per share on its first day, and it has more than doubled in value since then. Its market value recently sat at $27 billion.</p>\n<p>So what does the company do? In its own words, it's a \"monitoring and security platform for cloud applications,\" which helps companies</p>\n<blockquote>\n enable digital transformation and cloud migration, drive collaboration among development, operations, security and business teams, accelerate time to market for applications, reduce time to problem resolution, secure applications and infrastructure, understand user behavior, and track key business metrics.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Various applications have been added to its platform over time, making it even more powerful and attractive to potential customers, and more will be added. Its customers appear to be findinga lot to like in Datadog's offerings, as the company's retention rate was recently around 130%, suggesting not only that it retained most customers, but also that they increased their spending.</p>\n<p>Datadog is growing rapidly, with revenue tripling&nbsp;between fiscal 2018 and 2020. Like Zscaler, it'sposting losseswhile it invests in growth -- developing additional technologies, hiring more people, acquiring more customers, and ramping up its capabilities. Palo Alto Networks</b></p>\n<p><b>Palo Alto Networks</b>(NYSE:PANW)isa global leader in cybersecurity, with a market value recently near $35 billion. Clearly, threats from cyberspace are not going away anytime soon, and companies can't afford to have their systems hacked into and their safeguards breached. Enter Palo Alto, with technology, programs, and even consulting services to help companies secure their data and workings.</p>\n<p>In the company's last reported quarter, revenue and billings jumped 25% and 22% year over year, respectively, topping management's previous guidance. Its growth drivers include its cloud-delivered security subscription offerings, which have gone from four to eight in just two years, and the newer, higher support level that it's offering customers -- \"Platinum Support.\"</p>\n<p>Palo Alto's artificial-intelligence-powered threat detection platform Cortex counts&nbsp;66% of the Fortune 100 among its customers, plus 35% of the Global 2000. Interestingly, the company notes that \"Cortex XDR's Behavioral Threat Protection instantly blocked a SolarStorm attack on Palo Alto Networks\" and it sees the SolarStorm attack as a growth driver, as it generated more than 1,000 assessment requests related to it. CEO Nikesh Arora noted ina conference call:</p>\n<blockquote>\n This will result in more awareness and focus on cybersecurity, which in all candor, is the need of the hour given the complete reliance on technology in these times. We expect that this attack will be a wake-up call to all enterprises to modernize cybersecurity and will serve as a net incremental tailwind, not just for us but also for the industry.\n</blockquote>\n<p>These three companies are not selling at bargain-basement prices. But each appears to have a rosy future ahead of it. Consider digging more deeply into any of the companies that interest you, and if you like what you think, you might start a position in one or more by buying a few initial shares, and then add to that position over time. The company, recently sporting a market value near $26 billion, \"reached a new milestone by surpassing 5,000 customers during the quarter, including 500 of the Global 2000.\" Between fiscal 2016 and 2020, revenue grew more than fivefold.\nZscaler has a \"big, audacious goal\" of reaching 200 million users and 100 million workloads, and in a presentation for investors, outlined a handful of growth drivers, such as upselling to existing customers, an increased presence in Japan and Latin America, and continuing technological innovations.The company has excelledat retaining customers and, indeed, at increasing the average amount they spend.\nOne concern about Zscaler for investors may be that it has been posting net losses, not net income, in recent years. But that's not unusual for younger, smaller companies. They tend to plow as many dollars as possible into furthering their growth.\n2. Datadog\nSoftware-as-a-service (SaaS) companyDatadog(NASDAQ:DDOG)has been public for a shorter period than Zscaler. It debuted on the markets in September of 2019, closing at $37.55 per share on its first day, and it has more than doubled in value since then. Its market value recently sat at $27 billion.\nSo what does the company do? In its own words, it's a \"monitoring and security platform for cloud applications,\" which helps companies\n\n enable digital transformation and cloud migration, drive collaboration among development, operations, security and business teams, accelerate time to market for applications, reduce time to problem resolution, secure applications and infrastructure, understand user behavior, and track key business metrics.\n\nVarious applications have been added to its platform over time, making it even more powerful and attractive to potential customers, and more will be added. Its customers appear to be findinga lot to like in Datadog's offerings, as the company's retention rate was recently around 130%, suggesting not only that it retained most customers, but also that they increased their spending.\nDatadog is growing rapidly, with revenue tripling between fiscal 2018 and 2020. Like Zscaler, it'sposting losseswhile it invests in growth -- developing additional technologies, hiring more people, acquiring more customers, and ramping up its capabilities. Palo Alto Networks\nPalo Alto Networks(NYSE:PANW)isa global leader in cybersecurity, with a market value recently near $35 billion. Clearly, threats from cyberspace are not going away anytime soon, and companies can't afford to have their systems hacked into and their safeguards breached. Enter Palo Alto, with technology, programs, and even consulting services to help companies secure their data and workings.\nIn the company's last reported quarter, revenue and billings jumped 25% and 22% year over year, respectively, topping management's previous guidance. Its growth drivers include its cloud-delivered security subscription offerings, which have gone from four to eight in just two years, and the newer, higher support level that it's offering customers -- \"Platinum Support.\"\nPalo Alto's artificial-intelligence-powered threat detection platform Cortex counts 66% of the Fortune 100 among its customers, plus 35% of the Global 2000. Interestingly, the company notes that \"Cortex XDR's Behavioral Threat Protection instantly blocked a SolarStorm attack on Palo Alto Networks\" and it sees the SolarStorm attack as a growth driver, as it generated more than 1,000 assessment requests related to it. CEO Nikesh Arora noted ina conference call:\n\n This will result in more awareness and focus on cybersecurity, which in all candor, is the need of the hour given the complete reliance on technology in these times. We expect that this attack will be a wake-up call to all enterprises to modernize cybersecurity and will serve as a net incremental tailwind, not just for us but also for the industry.\n\nThese three companies are not selling at bargain-basement prices. But each appears to have a rosy future ahead of it. Consider digging more deeply into any of the companies that interest you, and if you like what you think, you might start a position in one or more by buying a few initial shares, and then add to that position over time. During the late 1980s, nearly a third of the nation’s savings and loan associations failed, ending with a taxpayer bailout — in 2021 terms — of about $265 billion.</p>\n<p>In 1997-1998, financial crises in Asia and Russia led to the near meltdown of the largest hedge fund in the U.S. —Long-Term Capital Management(LTCM). Its reach and operating practices were such that Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said that when LTCM failed, “he had never seen anything in his lifetime that compared to the terror” he felt. LTCM was deemed “too big to fail,” and he engineered a bailout by 14 major U.S. financial institutions.</p>\n<p>Exactly a decade later, too much leverage by some of those very institutions, and the bursting of a U.S. real estate bubble, led to the near collapse of the U.S. financial system. Once again, big banks were deemed too big to fail and taxpayers came to the rescue.</p>\n<p>The trend? Every 10 years or so, and they all look different.&nbsp;Are we in the early stages of a new crisis now, with the blowup at the family office Archegos Capital Management LP?</p>\n<p>A family office, for the uninitiated, is a private wealth management vehicle for the ultra-wealthy. Here’s what I mean by ultra-wealthy: Consulting firm EY estimates there are some 10,000 family offices globally, but manage, says a separate estimate by market research firm Campden Research, nearly $6 trillion. That $6 trillion is likely far higher now given that it’s based on 2019 data.</p>\n<p><b>Unregulated money managers</b></p>\n<p>Here’s the potential danger. Family offices generally aren’t regulated. The 1940 Investment Advisers Act says firms with 15 clients or fewer don’t have to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission. What this means is that trillions of dollars are in play and no one can really say who’s running the money, what it’s invested in, how much leverage is being used, and what kind of counterparty risk may exist. (Counterparty risk is the probability that one party involved in a financial transaction could default on a contractual obligation to someone else.)</p>\n<p>This appears to be the case with Archegos. The firm bet heavily on certain Chinese stocks, including e-commerce player&nbsp;Vipshop Holdings&nbsp;Ltd.VIPS,-1.19%,U.S.-listed Chinese tutoring company&nbsp;GSX Techedu&nbsp;Inc.GSX,-10.63%and U.S. media companiesViacomCBS&nbsp;Inc.VIAC,-3.90%and&nbsp;Discovery&nbsp;Inc.DISCA,-3.86%,among others. Share prices have tumbled lately, sparking large sales — some $30 billion — by Archegos.</p>\n<p>The problem is that only about a third of that, or $10 billion, was its own money. We now know that Archegos worked with some of the biggest names on Wall Street, including&nbsp;Credit Suisse Group AGCS,+1.59%,UBS Group AGUBS,+1.01%,Goldman Sachs Group Inc.GS,-1.25%,&nbsp;Morgan StanleyMS,-0.28%,Deutsche Bank AGDB,+0.74%and Nomura Holdings Inc.&nbsp;NMR,+1.87%.</p>\n<p>But since family offices are largely allowed to operate unregulated, who’s to say how much money is really involved here and what the extent of market risk is? My colleague Mark DeCambre&nbsp;reported last week that Archegos’ true exposures to bad trades could actuallybe closer to $100 billion.</p>\n<p><b>Danger of counterparty risk</b></p>\n<p>This is where counterparty risk comes in. As Archegos’ bets went south, the above banks — looking at losses of their own — hit the firm with margin calls. Deutsche quickly dumped about $4 billion in holdings, while Goldman and Morgan Stanley are also said to have unwound their positions, perhaps limiting their downside.</p>\n<p>So is this a financial crisis? It doesn’t appear to be. Even so, the Securities and Exchange Commission has opened a preliminary investigation into Archegos and its founder, Bill Hwang.</p>\n<p>One peer, Tom Lee, the research chief of Fundstrat Global Advisors, calls Hwang one of the “top 10 of the best investment minds” he knows.</p>\n<p>But federal regulators may have a lesser opinion. In 2012, Hwang’s former hedge fund, Tiger Asia Management, pleaded guilty and paid more than $60 million in penalties after it was accused of trading on illegal tips about Chinese banks. The SEC banned Hwang from managing money on behalf of clients — essentially booting him from the hedge fund industry. So Hwang opened Archegos, and again, family offices aren’t generally aren’t regulated.</p>\n<p><b>Yellen on the case</b></p>\n<p>This issue is on Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s radar. She said last week that greater oversight of these private corners of the financial industry is needed. The Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC), which she oversees, has revived a task force to help agencies better “share data, identify risks and work to strengthen our financial system.”</p>\n<p>Most financial crises end up with American taxpayers getting stuck with the tab. Gains belong to the risk-takers. But losses — they belong to us. To paraphrase Abe Lincoln, family offices — a multi-trillion dollar industry largely allowed to operate in the shadows in a global financial system that is more intertwined than ever — are of the super-wealthy, by the super-wealthy and for the super-wealthy. And no one else.</p>\n<p>The Archegos collapse may or may not be the beginning of yet another financial crisis.
