MarketWatch spoke with CFRA’s head of mutual fund and ETF research, Todd Rosenbluth, for some ideas.</p><p><b>Broadband</b></p><p>In a release outlining the plan, the Biden administration wrote, “Broadband internet is the new electricity. It is necessary for Americans to do their jobs, to participate equally in school learning, health care, and to stay connected.”</p><p>To invest in this theme, Rosenbluth suggests the Defiance Next Gen Connectivity ETFFIVG,+0.74%,which has the succinct ticker FIVG. Itsholdingsare “soup to nuts” companies that stand to benefit from a broader roll-out of data infrastructure, including cellular antennas and routers, mobile network operators, satellite-based communications, cloud computing equipment, fiber optic cables, data center real estate investment trusts, and much more.</p><p>FIVG has about $1.1 billion in assets, charges a 30-basis point management fee, and has been around for about two years.</p><p>Another option, the Pacer Benchmark Data &amp; Infrastructure Real Estate SCTR ETFSRVR,+0.72%,is more focused, as the name suggests, on the real estate needed for broadband technology. It’s important to note, however, that SRVR ismade up of real estate investment trusts, which have some different implications for investors than straight stocks do.</p><p><b>Water</b></p><p>“President Biden’s plan will eliminate all lead pipes and service lines in our drinking water systems, improving the health of our country’s children and communities of color,” the proposal notes.</p><p>“This is an investment theme that I thought was under the radar, but I’m pleasantly surprised to see that this ETF has a billion and a half in it,” Rosenbluth said. The fund in question is the Invesco Water Resources ETFPHO,+0.61%.</p><p>Rosenbluth calls PHO “extremely diversified” withholdingsin water utilities, machinery companies, industrials and materials companies that make the equipment to improve water infrastructure, life sciences tools and much more.</p><p>One added bonus of an ETF like this one, he said in an interview, is that they “tend to be cross-sector in nature. You’re surrounding the investment theme and participating in the broader ecosystem connected to that theme between the equipment and services.”</p><p>The caveat is that it doesn’t fit easily into existing traditional portfolio designs. “This is not an easy replacement for an industrial sector ETF or for ones that track utilities,” Rosenbluth said. “This is a multi-shaped ETF. Still, it can be a nice complemen to an existing portfolio, particularly for an investor with a long-term horizon.”</p><p>PHO also charges a bit more than many ETFs: 50 basis points. It’s been around since 2005, however.</p><p><b>Clean energy</b></p><p>As MarketWatch reported in mid-March,clean-energy ETFs have slumped in recent weeks, even though such spending figures prominently in the American Jobs Plan – and in spite of continued gains for the oil priceCL.1,0.63%.</p><p>At the time, Rosenbluth told MarketWatch, “these are really solid long-term investments.”</p><p>In the year to date, some of the most-favored clean-energy ETFs are still down substantially after a big run-up in 2020. The largest, the ishares Global Clean Energy ETFICLN,+3.45%,is nearly 14% lower, for example, while the Invesco Solar ETFTAN,+2.80%is off 11%.</p><p>The group rallied Wednesday after the Biden plan was released, suggesting there’s likely to be upside as the legislation advances. Other funds to consider might be the First Trust Nasdaq Clean Edge Green Energy Index FundQCLN,+4.16%,and the ALPS Clean Energy ETF.ACES,+4.32%</p><p><b>Transportation</b></p><p>It’s not a sector that’s going to see an immediate jump from the infrastructure spending plan, but transportation will get an indirect boost if materials and workers are moved around the country by plane, train, and automobile — and it will be a beneficiary later of improvements to facilities like roads, bridges, airports, and so on.</p><p>Rosenbluth suggests investors consider either the iShares TransportationIYT,-0.49%Average ETF, which is market-weighted, or the SPDR S&amp;P Transportation ETFXTN,-0.83%,which is equal-weighted.</p><p>“These funds would seem to be latter cycle beneficiaries as opposed to the companies that will improve the roads and infrastructure but they are a clear beneficiary and investing is about the longer term,” Rosenbluth pointed out.</p><p>Given their very different makeup, investors should look carefully at the portfolios for these two ETFs. IYT’s top three holdings, for example, are FedEx Corp.FDX,-0.66%at 12%, Norfolk Southern Corp.NSC,-0.65%at 11%, and Kansas City SouthernKSU,+1.65%making up 11% of the portfolio.</p><p>Kansas City Southern is XTN’s biggest holding, but only makes up 3.2% of the portfolio. What that means for the stock is anyone’s guess.</p><p>In a note Thursday, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter wrote that GameStop is “well-positioned to be a primary beneficiary of the new console launches.” But he thinks the stock is trading at levels that are disconnected from fundamentals. Though Pachter rates the stock at Neutral, he has a $16 price target. GameStop stock was down 0.7% to $200.27 on Friday.</p><p>By now, many Americans know why. GameStop stock was widely panned by Wall Street analysts, with the stock falling around the price of a Happy Meal a year ago. It garnered an obscene short interest, meaning hedge funds were&nbsp;lining up to bet on a price decline. But when short sellers get ahead of themselves, positive news can send stocks soaring as they rush to buy shares to close out their bets in the face of unlimited downside.</p><p>In the second half of last year, Chewy co-founder Ryan Cohen entered the mix. He revealed a stake and later called for major changes. He upped his stake in December and joined the board in January with two associates.</p><p>Keying in on the stock’s short interest, and the possibility that GameStop could find a second life as a gaming-focused e-commerce player, retail traders on Reddit’s WallStreetBets forum piled into GameStop stock.Technical quirks of options activity, the aforementioned short interest, and the newfound enthusiasm sent GameStop stock surging in January.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/af4f6daf9f72eda7b3a36b48e50ba509\" tg-width=\"1064\" tg-height=\"1255\"></p><p>WallStreetBets made it to the front pages of national newspapers, and the bearish hedge funds got torched. It also kicked off a debate about short selling, as well as one about retail traders’ access to financial markets after Robinhood and other brokers temporarily limited buying of the stock due to financial requirements from their clearinghouses.</p><p>GameStop stock fell back around $40 but surged again in the past month. Though GameStop announced&nbsp;a hunt for a new chief financial officer, some&nbsp;promising e-commerce-focused hires, and a board committee chaired by Cohen to guide its transformation into a technology company, it hasn’t provided an update on sales or its prospects since its holiday sales release on Jan. 11, which signaled a disappointing December.</p><p>For the full fiscal fourth quarter, Pachter, the analyst at Wedbush, expects sales of $2.3 billion, comparable sales up 4.8% year-over-year, and adjusted earnings of $1.38 a share. He notes that GameStop’s holiday sales report indicated same-store sales were down year-over-year in December andlagged behind positive industrywide data from NPD.He notes the company has lost market share in recent periods to competitors amid a shift to internet spending.</p><p>BofA Global Research analyst Curtis Nagle wrote in a Friday note that he expects an underwhelming quarter, albeit a profitable one. He wrote that while the recent announcements related to Cohen and new hires are positive, in theory, there haven’t been actual details on cost, timeline, and impacts to earnings of a turnaround plan. He has a $10 price objective with an Underperform rating, noting that the stock’s current valuation and historic multiple would imply earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization of $3.5 billion, about four times its peak Ebitda from 2015.</p><p>Nagle’s note included an analysis on the impact of $1,400 direct payments on the stock, the idea being that retail investors will use their latest windfall on GameStop stock. His takeaway is that the “stimmies,” as he calls them, will not impact GameStop stock going forward.</p><p>Of course, what analysts have said about GameStop stock hasn’t had much of an impact on its recent moves. A positive update on the turnaround plan could thwart the remaining bears in the near term. On the flip side, any commentary on&nbsp;possible stock sales&nbsp;could be negative. Pachter had expected short sellers to abandon their bets, with the stock returning to more fundamental-based levels. He revealed a stake and later called for major changes. He upped his stake in December and joined the board in January with two associates.Keying in on the stock’s short interest, and the possibility that GameStop could find a second life as a gaming-focused e-commerce player, retail traders on Reddit’s WallStreetBets forum piled into GameStop stock.Technical quirks of options activity, the aforementioned short interest, and the newfound enthusiasm sent GameStop stock surging in January.WallStreetBets made it to the front pages of national newspapers, and the bearish hedge funds got torched. It also kicked off a debate about short selling, as well as one about retail traders’ access to financial markets after Robinhood and other brokers temporarily limited buying of the stock due to financial requirements from their clearinghouses.GameStop stock fell back around $40 but surged again in the past month. Though GameStop announced a hunt for a new chief financial officer, some promising e-commerce-focused hires, and a board committee chaired by Cohen to guide its transformation into a technology company, it hasn’t provided an update on sales or its prospects since its holiday sales release on Jan. 11, which signaled a disappointing December.For the full fiscal fourth quarter, Pachter, the analyst at Wedbush, expects sales of $2.3 billion, comparable sales up 4.8% year-over-year, and adjusted earnings of $1.38 a share. Investors appear to be rotating from growth to value and into sectors with more exposure to a cyclical economic recovery.</p><p>Quite simply, fatigue may be setting into overcrowded trades and investment themes—whether those are alternative-meat producers, a travel recovery, green energy, or the continued domination of Big Tech.</p><p>Against that backdrop, investors may want to tread cautiously. One way to do so: Avoid stocks with low earnings quality and high short interest—meaning there are short positions, or bearish bets, on a large percentage of a company’s shares outstanding. (A short position is when investors borrow and then sell shares, betting that a stock’s price will fall so they can buy shares back at a cheaper price.) Stocks with that combination of attributes may be most at risk of underperforming or blowing up, according to Wolfe Research.</p><p>The firm ranks stocks on a relative basis within sectors by scoring earnings quality on seven financial measures, while also looking at valuation and sentiment indicators, based on fourth-quarter financials.</p><p>Wolfe calls stocks scoring in the bottom 10% of earnings quality, while also seeing high short interest, “our highest conviction cohort of stocks to avoid.”</p><p>One caveat: Low-quality stocks have been a popular trade—fueled by ample market liquidity and demand for riskier assets. High short interest also primes a stock for a short-squeeze, whereby traders who are short buy the stock to cover their positions, exerting upward pressure on the price. Nothing illustrates that dynamic more than the frenzied trading around GameStop (ticker: GME) this year.</p><p>Beauty products maker Coty (COTY), for example, shows up on Wolfe’s screen. But it may have already had its blowup, falling 15% the day it released its earnings report in February. Barron’s was bullish on the stock in the aftermath, and it has been moving up since then.</p><p>Nonetheless, plenty of other stocks on Wolfe’s watch list do seem vulnerable. Many have surged in a reopening trade or company-specific dynamics, and all trade at steep valuations. Here are 10 stocks from Wolfe’s list:</p><p>Carvana (CVNA), for instance, has been a blockbuster, gaining 535% over the last 52 weeks. Investors appear to have decided that it is a disruptive force in car buying and that a pandemic-fueled shift to online sales has accelerated its momentum. However, Carvana isn’t close to reporting a profit, and is expected to lose $1.96 a share this year and 97 cents in 2022.</p><p>The stock is up around 11% this year, but it has been wobbling lately and is down from its 52-week high around $315, trading recently at $287. The data are used by some on Wall Street as a measure of sentiment of how hedge funds and institutional investors are positioning in the U.S. equity markets.</p>\n<p>“This indicator…returned to 2013-2014 peaks on a dollar value basis [left image] earlier this year, and to levels that have marked the peak several times since then in terms of the number of contracts owned [right image],” she said. “While U.S. equity futures positioning generally has been highlighting risk of a pullback in stocks in recent months, that signal has been the most clear in Nasdaq positioning.”</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6281c4e4ef83849068bf0c3a1e1adfbe\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"636\"></p>\n<p>As of the last update (last Tuesday’s close), the decline in Nasdaq futures positioning was roughly halfway back to the lows of 2018 in terms of dollar value and contracts, she said.</p>\n<p>Calvasina also suggested investors keep an eye on valuations for the tech + internet + media + telecom (TIMT) space, based on where those levels were in the bubble of 2000.</p>\n<p>“Our work here also suggests that big tech underperformance hasn’t run its course,” she said, even with sharp falls seen early this year, the weighted median forward price/earnings measure of TIMT sits at 26.2 times, well above a long-term average of 18.3 times. Futures are also pointing to a sharp rebound for technology stocks after the Nasdaq Composite&nbsp;fell into correction territory on Monday.</p>\n<p>One valid question to ask right now is, how much more of a pullback for techs will we see? “Our work on positioning suggests that the big tech unwind may be at least halfway done, but isn’t finished,” said Lori Calvasina, RBC Capital’s head of U.S. equity strategy, in our&nbsp;<b>call of the day</b>.</p>\n<p>Calvasina based this on a tracking of weekly Nasdaq futures contracts, provided by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The data are used by some on Wall Street as a measure of sentiment of how hedge funds and institutional investors are positioning in the U.S. equity markets.</p>\n<p>“This indicator…returned to 2013-2014 peaks on a dollar value basis [left image] earlier this year, and to levels that have marked the peak several times since then in terms of the number of contracts owned [right image],” she said. “While U.S. equity futures positioning generally has been highlighting risk of a pullback in stocks in recent months, that signal has been the most clear in Nasdaq positioning.”</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6281c4e4ef83849068bf0c3a1e1adfbe\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"636\"></p>\n<p>As of the last update (last Tuesday’s close), the decline in Nasdaq futures positioning was roughly halfway back to the lows of 2018 in terms of dollar value and contracts, she said.</p>\n<p>Calvasina also suggested investors keep an eye on valuations for the tech + internet + media + telecom (TIMT) space, based on where those levels were in the bubble of 2000.</p>\n<p>“Our work here also suggests that big tech underperformance hasn’t run its course,” she said, even with sharp falls seen early this year, the weighted median forward price/earnings measure of TIMT sits at 26.2 times, well above a long-term average of 18.3 times. It is also elevated on a forward price/earnings relative to the S&amp;P 500.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7306c8462ecd9679fb16c08ac3a469c7\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"646\"><span>UNCREDITED</span></p>\n<p>As for what investors should do now, Calvasina has been telling clients that small-caps look cheap versus large-caps, and financials, energy and material don’t look expensive yet.</p>\n<p>She is also eyeing the midcap space for a few reasons. Firstly, the Russell Midcap&nbsp;and S&amp;P 400 MidCap&nbsp;benchmark indexes are more exposed to cyclical sectors than TIMT, futures positioning on those smaller stocks isn’t looking stretched (see chart below) and valuations look attractive versus large-caps, and reasonable versus smaller companies, she argues.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/750d414832524e7c7c6e718db9a1d110\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"653\"><span>UNCREDITED</span></p>\n<p>“We’ve been advising managers to move down market cap, given the tendency of low market cap to outperform within the Russell 1000&nbsp;coming out of recessions and over time,” said Calvasina.</p>\n<p><b>The markets</b></p>\n<p>Stock futures&nbsp;are pointing to gains across the board, led by beaten-down techs,up 2%. The data are used by some on Wall Street as a measure of sentiment of how hedge funds and institutional investors are positioning in the U.S. equity markets.\n“This indicator…returned to 2013-2014 peaks on a dollar value basis [left image] earlier this year, and to levels that have marked the peak several times since then in terms of the number of contracts owned [right image],” she said. “While U.S. equity futures positioning generally has been highlighting risk of a pullback in stocks in recent months, that signal has been the most clear in Nasdaq positioning.”\n\nAs of the last update (last Tuesday’s close), the decline in Nasdaq futures positioning was roughly halfway back to the lows of 2018 in terms of dollar value and contracts, she said.\nCalvasina also suggested investors keep an eye on valuations for the tech + internet + media + telecom (TIMT) space, based on where those levels were in the bubble of 2000.\n“Our work here also suggests that big tech underperformance hasn’t run its course,” she said, even with sharp falls seen early this year, the weighted median forward price/earnings measure of TIMT sits at 26.2 times, well above a long-term average of 18.3 times. But investing experts say there are more costs to consider before jumping on the robo-investing train.</p>\n<p>“Much like in Vegas, the house generally wins,” said Vance Barse, a San Diego, California-based financial advisor who runs a company called Your Dedicated Fiduciary.</p>\n<p>Although the 35 basis-point price tag is a “loss leader” to Goldman Sachs, he said companies typically make such offers in order to attract clients to cross-sell them banking products.</p>\n<p>“People forget that banks are ultimately in the business of making money,” he said.</p>\n<p>Goldman Sachs declined to comment.</p>\n<p>The company is among other major financial-services firms offering digital advisers, including Vanguard, Fidelity and Schwab SCHW, +1.03% and startups such as Betterment and Wealthfront.</p>\n<p>Fees for robo advisers can start at around 0.25%, and increase to 1% and above for traditional brokers. A survey of nearly 1,000 financial planners by Inside Information, a trade publication, found that the bigger the portfolio, the lower the percentage clients paid in fees.</p>\n<p>The median annual charge hovered at around 1% for portfolios of $1 million or less, and 0.5% for portfolios worth $5 million to $10 million.</p>\n<p>Robo advisers like those on offer from Goldman Sachs and Betterment differ from robo platforms like Robinhood. The former suggest portfolios focused on exchange-traded funds, while Robinhood allows users to invest in individual ETFs, stocks, options and even cryptocurrencies.</p>\n<p><b>Robo investing as a self-driving car</b></p>\n<p>Consumers have turned to robo-investing at unprecedented levels during the pandemic.</p>\n<p>The rate of new accounts opened jumped between 50% and 300% during the first quarter of 2020 compared to the fourth quarter of last year, according to a May report published by research and advisory firm Aite Group.</p>\n<p>So what is rob-investing? Think of it like a self-driving car.</p>\n<p>You put in your destination, buckle up in the backseat and your driver (robo adviser) will get there. You, the passenger, can’t easily slam the breaks if you fear your driver is leading you in the wrong direction. Nor can you put your foot on the gas pedal if you’re in a rush and want to get to your destination faster.</p>\n<p>Robo-investing platforms use advanced-trading algorithm software to design investment portfolios based on factors such as an individual’s appetite for risk-taking and desired short-term and long-term returns.</p>\n<p>There are over 200 platforms that provide these services charging typically no more than a 0.5% annual advisory fee, compared to the 1% annual fee human investment advisors charge.</p>\n<p>And rather than investing entirely on your own, which can become a second job and lead to emotional investment decisions, robo advisers handle buying and selling assets.</p>\n<p>Cynthia Loh, Schwab vice president of Digital Advice and Innovation, disagrees, and argues that robo investing doesn’t mean giving technology control of your money. Schwab, she said, has a team of investment experts who oversee investment strategy and keep watch during periods of market volatility, although some services have more input from humans than others.</p>\n<p>As she recently wrote on MarketWatch: “One common misconception about automated investing is that choosing a robo adviser essentially means handing control of your money over to robots. The truth is that robo solutions have a combination of automated and human components running things behind the scenes.”</p>\n<p><b>Robos appeal to inexperienced investors</b></p>\n<p>Robo investing tends to appeal to inexperienced investors or ones who don’t have the time or energy to manage their own portfolios. These investors can take comfort in the “set it and forget it approach to investing and overtime let the markets do their thing,” Barse said.</p>\n<p>That makes it much easier to stomach market volatility knowing that you don’t necessarily have to make spur-of-the-moment decisions to buy or sell assets, said Tiffany Lam-Balfour, an investing and retirement specialist at NerdWallet.</p>\n<p>“When you’re investing, you don’t want to keep looking at the market and going ‘Oh I need to get out of this,’” she said. “You want to leave it to the professionals to get you through it because they know what your time horizon is, and they’ll adjust your portfolio automatically for you.”</p>\n<p>That said, “you can’t just expect your investments will only go up. Even if you had the world’s best human financial adviser you can’t expect that.”</p>\n<p>Others disagree, and say robo advisers appeal to older investors. “Planning for and paying yourself in retirement is complex. There are many options out there to help investors through it, and robo investing is one of them,” Loh said.</p>\n<p>“Many thoughtful, long-term investors have discovered that they want a more modern, streamlined, and inexpensive way to invest, and robo investing fits the bill. They are happy to let technology handle the mundane activities that are harder and more time-consuming for investors to do themselves,” she added.</p>\n<p><b>There is often no door to knock on</b></p>\n<p>Your robo adviser only knows what you tell it. The simplistic questionnaire you’re required to fill out will on most robo-investing platforms will collect information on your annual income, desired age to retire and the level of risk you’re willing to take on.</p>\n<p>It won’t however know if you just had a child and would like to begin saving for their education down the road or if you recently lost your job.</p>\n<p>“The question then becomes to whom does that person go to for advice and does that platform offer that and if so, to what level of complexity?” said Barse.</p>\n<p>Not all platforms give individualized investment advice and the hybrid models that do offer advice from a human tend to charge higher annual fees.</p>\n<p>Additionally, a robo adviser won’t necessarily “manage your money with tax efficiency at front of mind,” said Roger Ma, a certified financial planner at Lifelaidout, a New York City-based financial advisory group.</p>\n<p>For instance, one common way investors offset the taxes they pay on long-term investments is by selling assets that have accrued losses. Traditional advisers often specialize in constructing portfolios that lead to the most tax-efficient outcomes, said Ma, who is the author of “Work Your Money, Not Your Life”.</p>\n<p>But with robo investing, the trades that are made for you are the same ones that are being made for a slew of other investors who may fall under a different tax-bracket than you.</p>\n<p>On top of that, while robo investing may feel like a simplistic way to get into investing, especially for beginners it can “overcomplicate investing,” Ma said.</p>\n<p>“If you are just looking to dip your toe in and you want to feel like you’re invested in a diversified portfolio, I wouldn’t say definitely don’t do a robo adviser,” he said.</p>\n<p>Don’t rule out investing through a target-date fund that selects a single fund to invest in and adjusts the position over time based on their investment goals, he added.</p>\n<p>But not everyone can tell the difference between robo advice and advice from a human being.
