For Pfizer’s investors, that has been the question for the past year. Despite coming up with a blockbuster vaccine for the novel coronavirus, PFE stock did basically nothing for an extended period.\nThat finally changed this summer, when Pfizer belatedly rallied to new all-time highs. Now though, the gains are fading almost as quickly as they happened. In its Q2 earnings release, Pfizer reported 93% year-over-year revenue growth. Yet shares are up less than 20% over the past 12 months. Why have investors not given Pfizer credit for its performance, and will that change in the future?\nVaccine Hits A Setback\nPfizer has enjoyed incredible revenue growth over the past year due to its Covid-19 vaccine. The majority of vaccinated American adults have taken the Pfizer vaccine, and it’s had strong sales overseas as well.\nDespite that, however, PFE stock didn’t move too much. At least, not until July of this year. At that time, PFE stock finally took off. The reason why is that investors started to price in the expectation that people would need to take vaccine booster shots to maintain efficacy.\nThe idea of a third, and potentially even fourth or more dose of vaccines would have created a far more enduring revenue boost for Pfizer. Up until recently, investors had shied away from Pfizer despite its massive top-line growth because they anticipated that the Covid business would quickly recede. With booster shots, however, the vaccine would have taken on another level of importance to the company.\nThis scenario is now under increasing doubt, however. A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel recentlyrecommended againstadvising booster shots of the Pfizer vaccine. A large majority of the panelists voted that the data on hand was insufficient to warrant booster shots. That comes amid reports that Moderna’s(NASDAQ:MRNA) vaccine remains effective in a higher percentage of people than Pfizer’s after 120 days.\nThis is hardly the final word on booster shots or the efficacy of Moderna versus Pfizer. Pfizer’s investors shouldn’t discount the possibility that the FDA later comes around on additional rounds of the vaccine. For now, however, the prospects are looking more uncertain.\nBaseline Valuation Is Not That Demanding\nLet’s go back in time to 2019 and pretend that we’ve never heard of the pandemic. What does an investment in Pfizer look like in this hypothetical scenario? For full-year 2018, Pfizer generated $1.87 of EPS. In 2019, this leapt to $2.87.\nBased on today’s stock price just below $44, PFE stock is selling at 23x 2018 earnings or 15x 2019 earnings. With no benefit from the current Covid-19 vaccine whatsoever, Pfizer stock would still be going for a reasonable multiple.\nYes, you can argue that pharmaceutical companies should trade for lower P/E multiples than many other industries given the high cost of drug development and quick patent expiries. Still, with earnings as strong as they were in 2018-19, it’s not hard to get behind the stock at $44 even if you give the company zero credit for the Covid-19 vaccine. Forget about booster shots for a minute, traders are pricing Pfizer like there will be little more revenue from the vaccine whatsoever.\nPFE Stock Verdict\nRight now, Pfizer stock is inextricably linked to its vaccine’s outlook. When there is positive news on that front, PFE stock surges. When there is a setback, PFE stock sells off hard. That’s a totally understandable market reaction. Many traders are trained to react quickly to the latest headline.\nFor longer-term investors, however, Pfizer is an opportunity regardless of the trajectory of the vaccine. Even if boosters ultimately aren’t a big thing, Pfizer can still make investors money from this entry point.\nThe company is a tremendous diversified pharmaceutical giant. It was in good shape long before the pandemic, and it has dozens of promising drugs in its pipeline to power it for the next decade and beyond. The company is reaping a windfall right now, but it’s not like that’s its only iron in the fire.\nIf the Covid-19 business continues longer than forecast, that’s all upside to the stock price. The former CEO of Washington Mutual is worried that another bubble is brewing.</p>\n<p>Kerry Killinger was named CEO of WaMu in 1990 and was fired in September 2008 -- just weeks before the bank failed as a growing number of mortgage loans went bad.</p>\n<p>WaMu was one of several top financial firms to collapse during the financial crisis last decade, but the giant savings and loan with more than $300 billion in assets still ranks as the biggest-ever bank failure. WaMu was seized by regulators in September 2008 and sold to JPMorgan Chase (JPM) for a fire-sale price of $1.9 billion.</p>\n<p>Killinger spoke to CNN Business about the similarities and differences between now and 13 years ago.</p>\n<p><b>The good news</b></p>\n<p>The Global Financial Crisis led to a wave of new federal rules that were designed to strengthen the balance sheets of top banks and ensure that another catastrophe like 2008 could never happen again.</p>\n<p>The good news is that Killinger thinks JPMorgan Chase and other \"too big to fail banks\" are in much better shape now after laws like Dodd-Frank and the Volcker Rule were put into place in the wake of the financial crisis to make big banks safer.</p>\n<p>That group of institutions also includes Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), Wells Fargo (WFC), Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS), as well as others that received government bailouts in 2008.</p>\n<p>\"Regulated banks do have more concentrated market share now so they have to be more careful,\" Killinger said. \"But the health of the industry is great, earnings are good and oversight is strong. I'm not too concerned there.\"</p>\n<p>Subprime lending, the practice of giving mortgages to people with less-than-worthy credit histories, isn't nearly as prevalent as it was during the last housing boom. But Killinger is worried about bubbles in many other parts of the economy that threaten the stability of the markets.</p>\n<p><b>Too big to fail 2.0?</b></p>\n<p>Although housing prices have surged again, Killinger is more nervous about the fact that 0% interest rates and big bond purchases by the Federal Reserve have sparked a broader mania in other assets, including cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), meme stocks, blank check SPAC mergers and exotic exchange-traded funds.</p>\n<p>\"The bubbles today are broader and deeper in a variety of categories, not just housing,\" Killinger said. \"The Fed's policy of low rates and massive asset purchases worked well to get out of the downturn, but when you keep extending it you can cause unintended consequences.\"</p>\n<p>\"The economy continues to improve. It's time for the Fed to pull in the reins on stimulus and allow interest rates to rise,\" he added.</p>\n<p>Killinger and his wife Linda, a former vice chair of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines, have written a book about the 2008 meltdown called \"Nothing Is Too Big to Fail: How the Last Financial Crisis Informs Today.\"</p>\n<p>Linda Killinger told CNN Business she's concerned about the rise of of financial tech companies, hedge funds. private equity firms and other so-called shadow banks that face little to no regulation in Washington.</p>\n<p>\"The non-bank system is a big part of the problem. And there are still a lot of loans being done by non-regulated banks such as online banks and many private companies,\" she said.</p>\n<p><b>Large financial firms may be embracing too much risk again</b></p>\n<p>At least one prominent senator is worried, like the Killingers are, that some financial firms are once again getting too unwieldy.</p>\n<p>Elizabeth Warren questioned Treasury secretary Janet Yellen earlier this year about why BlackRock (BLK), the iShares ETF giant that manages more than $9 trillion in assets but is not a bank, is not considered \"too big to fail.\"</p>\n<p>Wall Street has already gotten a brief taste of how risky some of these firms are when Archegos Capital Management, a family office with big positions in media giants ViacomCBS (VIACA) and Discovery (DISCA) and Chinese techs Baidu (BIDU) and Tencent Music (TME), imploded and caused billions of dollars in losses for banks. (AT&amp;T (T) is planning to merge its WarnerMedia unit, CNN's parent company, with Discovery.)</p>\n<p>For its part, the Fed has acknowledged some of the growing risks to the markets and economy from keeping rates lower for longer and continuing to provide crisis-level stimulus.</p>\n<p>In the minutes of its latest policy meeting, the central bank acknowledged that \"if the economy continued to make rapid progress toward the Committee's goals, it might be appropriate at some point in upcoming meetings to begin discussing a plan for adjusting the pace of asset purchases.\"</p>\n<p>But Kerry Killinger thinks the Fed has to do a better job of stress-testing big banks for their exposure to some of the types of assets that have been surging in the past year to make sure that they can withstand even more volatility.</p>\n<p>\"The Fed made the mistake of underestimating subprime in the last crisis,\" he said, referring to the now infamous comments from then Fed chair Ben Bernanke in May 2007 that \"the effect of the troubles in the subprime sector on the broader housing market will likely be limited.\"</p>\n<p>\"There are growing asset bubbles,\" Kerry Killinger said. \"The Fed needs to test more how firms would perform if these asset prices decline further. If there is a major correction, the impact could be dramatic.\"</p>\n<p>The heads of big banks will also get their chance to talk about their views on the economy later this week. The former CEO of Washington Mutual is worried that another bubble is brewing.\nKerry Killinger was named CEO of WaMu in 1990 and was fired in September 2008 -- just weeks before the bank failed as a growing number of mortgage loans went bad.\nWaMu was one of several top financial firms to collapse during the financial crisis last decade, but the giant savings and loan with more than $300 billion in assets still ranks as the biggest-ever bank failure. WaMu was seized by regulators in September 2008 and sold to JPMorgan Chase (JPM) for a fire-sale price of $1.9 billion.\nKillinger spoke to CNN Business about the similarities and differences between now and 13 years ago.\nThe good news\nThe Global Financial Crisis led to a wave of new federal rules that were designed to strengthen the balance sheets of top banks and ensure that another catastrophe like 2008 could never happen again.\nThe good news is that Killinger thinks JPMorgan Chase and other \"too big to fail banks\" are in much better shape now after laws like Dodd-Frank and the Volcker Rule were put into place in the wake of the financial crisis to make big banks safer.\nThat group of institutions also includes Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), Wells Fargo (WFC), Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS), as well as others that received government bailouts in 2008.\n\"Regulated banks do have more concentrated market share now so they have to be more careful,\" Killinger said. \"But the health of the industry is great, earnings are good and oversight is strong. I'm not too concerned there.\"\nSubprime lending, the practice of giving mortgages to people with less-than-worthy credit histories, isn't nearly as prevalent as it was during the last housing boom. But Killinger is worried about bubbles in many other parts of the economy that threaten the stability of the markets.\nToo big to fail 2.0?\nAlthough housing prices have surged again, Killinger is more nervous about the fact that 0% interest rates and big bond purchases by the Federal Reserve have sparked a broader mania in other assets, including cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), meme stocks, blank check SPAC mergers and exotic exchange-traded funds.\n\"The bubbles today are broader and deeper in a variety of categories, not just housing,\" Killinger said. \"The Fed's policy of low rates and massive asset purchases worked well to get out of the downturn, but when you keep extending it you can cause unintended consequences.\"\n\"The economy continues to improve. It's time for the Fed to pull in the reins on stimulus and allow interest rates to rise,\" he added.\nKillinger and his wife Linda, a former vice chair of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines, have written a book about the 2008 meltdown called \"Nothing Is Too Big to Fail: How the Last Financial Crisis Informs Today.\"\nLinda Killinger told CNN Business she's concerned about the rise of of financial tech companies, hedge funds. private equity firms and other so-called shadow banks that face little to no regulation in Washington.\n\"The non-bank system is a big part of the problem. And there are still a lot of loans being done by non-regulated banks such as online banks and many private companies,\" she said.\nLarge financial firms may be embracing too much risk again\nAt least one prominent senator is worried, like the Killingers are, that some financial firms are once again getting too unwieldy.\nElizabeth Warren questioned Treasury secretary Janet Yellen earlier this year about why BlackRock (BLK), the iShares ETF giant that manages more than $9 trillion in assets but is not a bank, is not considered \"too big to fail.\"\nWall Street has already gotten a brief taste of how risky some of these firms are when Archegos Capital Management, a family office with big positions in media giants ViacomCBS (VIACA) and Discovery (DISCA) and Chinese techs Baidu (BIDU) and Tencent Music (TME), imploded and caused billions of dollars in losses for banks. (AT&T (T) is planning to merge its WarnerMedia unit, CNN's parent company, with Discovery.)\nFor its part, the Fed has acknowledged some of the growing risks to the markets and economy from keeping rates lower for longer and continuing to provide crisis-level stimulus.\nIn the minutes of its latest policy meeting, the central bank acknowledged that \"if the economy continued to make rapid progress toward the Committee's goals, it might be appropriate at some point in upcoming meetings to begin discussing a plan for adjusting the pace of asset purchases.\"\nBut Kerry Killinger thinks the Fed has to do a better job of stress-testing big banks for their exposure to some of the types of assets that have been surging in the past year to make sure that they can withstand even more volatility.\n\"The Fed made the mistake of underestimating subprime in the last crisis,\" he said, referring to the now infamous comments from then Fed chair Ben Bernanke in May 2007 that \"the effect of the troubles in the subprime sector on the broader housing market will likely be limited.\"\n\"There are growing asset bubbles,\" Kerry Killinger said. \"The Fed needs to test more how firms would perform if these asset prices decline further. If there is a major correction, the impact could be dramatic.\"\nThe heads of big banks will also get their chance to talk about their views on the economy later this week. It hasn’t provided revenue&nbsp;guidance since the start of the pandemic, citing uncertainty.&nbsp;This is Apple’s second quarter in a row with double-digit growth in all product categories.&nbsp;Apple CFO Luca Maestri told analysts that the company expects June quarter revenue to rise by double digits year-over-year, although it faces some supply shortages due to the worldwide chip shortage.</p><p>Apple has said in the past months that its business has been boosted by the pandemic as consumers&nbsp;and businesses&nbsp;bought&nbsp;computers&nbsp;to work and entertain themselves while at home. But Apple’s strong results in the quarter suggest that the trend may persist as more economies&nbsp;open up.</p><p>Or, as Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement: “This quarter reflects both the enduring ways our products have helped our users meet this&nbsp;moment in their own lives, as well as the optimism consumers seem to feel about better days&nbsp;ahead for all of us.”</p><p>Mac sales were up 70%, and Cook said that the result was “fueled by” the company’s introduction of its Mac&nbsp;laptops&nbsp;that used its own M1 chips&nbsp;for longer battery life, instead of processors sold by&nbsp;Intel.&nbsp;iPad sales were up&nbsp;nearly 79% year-over-year.</p><p>Neither of those&nbsp;results&nbsp;include iPad Pro or iMac models the company announced in March, which are expected to drive additional demand.</p><p>“We’re seeing strong first-time buyers on the Mac&nbsp;…&nbsp;it continues to run just south of 50%,” Cook told CNBC’s Josh Lipton. “And, in China, it’s even higher than that&nbsp;…&nbsp;it’s more around two-thirds. And that speaks to people preferring to work on the Mac.”</p><p>Apple’s iPhone also reported strong results this quarter, quelling fears that the current annual cycle could slow down. Last year, Apple released iPhones with a new exterior design and 5G support, which many investors believed could prompt a major upgrade cycle, which this quarter’s results indicate.</p><p>In greater China, which includes the mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan,&nbsp;Apple’s revenue increased over&nbsp;87% year-over-year to $17.73 billion, although the comparison is to a quarter last year in which China was largely shut down in the early days of the pandemic.&nbsp;Every other geographical category, including the Americas and Europe, were also up on an annual basis.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/37a8b45c92174e3c9ab224d9a85f5e2d\" tg-width=\"1910\" tg-height=\"1114\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Apple’s&nbsp;high-margin&nbsp;services business, including iCloud, App Store, and subscriptions like Apple Music, also showed 26.7% growth.</p><p>One metric that Apple uses to show the growth in services is the number of subscriptions it has, which not only include its own subscriptions like Apple One, but also subscriptions through its App Store.</p><p>“We now have over 660 million paid subscriptions across the services on the platform, and that’s up 40 million from the previous quarter, which is an acceleration from 35 million,” Cook told CNBC.</p><p>However, Apple’s App Store has been challenged by lawmakers and companies that say it costs too much and has too much power. A closely-watched trial with Fortnite maker Epic Games over App Store policies kicks off next week.</p><p>“The App Store has been an economic miracle. Last year, the estimates are that there was over a half a trillion dollars of economic activity because of the store. And, so, this has been just an economic gamechanger for not only the United States, but several countries around the world. And, we’re going to go in and tell our story. And we’ll see where it goes. But, we’re confident,” Cook told CNBC.</p><p>Apple’s gross margin was also unusually elevated for the company.
