The Nasdaq Composite jumped 3.19%.</p><p>The Fed increased its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points, as expected, and said it would begin reducing its balance sheet in June. However, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said during his news conference that the central bank is “not actively considering” a larger 75 basis point rate hike, which appeared to spark a rally.</p><p>Still, the Fed remains open to the prospect of taking rates above neutral to rein in inflation, Zachary Hill, head of portfolio strategy at Horizon Investments, noted.</p><p>“Despite the tightening that we have seen in financial conditions over the last few months, it is clear that the Fed would like to see them tighten further,” he said. “Higher equity valuations are incompatible with that desire, so unless supply chains heal rapidly or workers flood back into the labor force, any equity rallies are likely on borrowed time as Fed messaging becomes more hawkish once again.”</p><p>The Treasury market saw a more dramatic reversal of Wednesday’s rally. The 10-year Treasury yield, which moves opposite of price, surged back above 3% on Thursday morning.</p><p>Carlyle Group co-founder David Rubenstein said investors need to get “back to reality” about the headwinds for markets and the economy, including the war in Russia and high inflation.</p><p>“We’re also looking at 50-basis-point increases the next two FOMC meetings. So we are going to be tightening a bit. A surprise drop in subscribers torched the leading streamer, and the narrative that it could grow consistently as the streaming market expanded now looks broken.It's not a surprise that Netflix plunged, but it's a mistake to write off the one-time market darling. Here are three reasons why Netflix stock could recover.IMAGE SOURCE: NETFLIX.1. There's a lot of content fat to trimNetflix plans to spend $18 billion on programming this year. To put that in perspective, that's roughly equal to the budgets for the 60 most expensive movies ever made.Netflix makes more than movies, of course, but $18 billion seems excessive, especially for content that lives almost entirely on Netflix itself, rather than in movie theaters or cable networks. The company ramped up content spending for years, arguing that more content drove subscription growth, but that strategy now appears to have reached its endpoint.Netflix recognizes it needs to spend more efficiently on content, something that never seemed to be a priority before, and the company is already taking steps to do that. According to The Wall Street Journal, it's now prioritizing return on investment instead of reach, and plans to focus on quality rather than quantity.As the success of other streaming platforms has shown, you only need one or two hits to attract subscribers, and much of the content on Netflix gets lost as there's no easy way to view the full catalog. While management hasn't said it will slash content spending, it did indicate on the earnings call that it would hold it back, at least until it reaccelerates revenue growth.Improving ROI in content should be low-hanging fruit for the company, as there appear to be plenty of flops on the service -- like \"He's Expecting,\" a Japanese show about a man who gets pregnant, which gets just a 1.1 out of 10 on IMDB.2. Advertising is comingNetflix has long resisted advertising, as co-CEO Reed Hastings has said he prefers the simplicity of the company's subscriber model. But with subscriber growth stagnating, the company looks ready to change course. On the earnings call, Hastings said, \"Allowing consumers who would like to have a lower price and are advertising-tolerant [to] get what they want makes a lot of sense. So that's something we're looking at now. We're trying to figure out over the next year or two. But think of us as quite open to offering even lower prices with advertising as a consumer choice.\"A lower-tier advertising plan makes sense for Netflix. It would help the company combat the challenge it's facing with password sharing, and the ad-tier model has been proven to work elsewhere. Hulu, for example, makes about the same in revenue from its ad subscriptions that it does from ad-free subscriptions. Diversifying revenue streams also seems like a smart move, especially as subscriber growth no longer seems reliable. Advertisers are likely eager to get on Netflix, which has a unique reach with more than 200 million global subscribers and in-depth knowledge of their viewing habits.Offering an ad tier will likely give Netflix another high-margin revenue stream.3. Fixing recommendationsOne longtime challenge for Netflix has been its recommendation engine. Every user gets a different set of movies and TV shows displayed to them when they log in, but Netflix isn't always so good at finding something you want to watch. Users regularly complain that there's nothing good on the service, and its massive library tends to get lost in a menu that shows comparatively few choices.In the letter to shareholders, management said it was focused in particular on improving the \"quality of programming and recommendations.\" The company also said it was introducing a feature called \"double thumbs up\" to help users tell them what their favorite shows and movies are.It's been years since Netflix introduced a major product change, and it seems long overdue. Improving recommendations may not be easy, but it's a problem well worth tackling. In order for Netflix to provide value, the only two things it really needs to do is create content users want to watch and make it easy for them to find it.Management seemed to think that it would take a year or two to get these changes in place to reaccelerate subscriber growth -- so a turnaround won't be sudden, but Netflix clearly isn't standing still.The good news is that the streaming stock trades for less than 20 times trailing earnings. That slowdown doesn't bode well for Nvidia and other PC chipmakers.Meanwhile, data center operators might buy fewer Nvidia GPUs for AI tasks as the usage of cloud-based services decelerates in a post-lockdown market. Its oft-overlooked automotive chip business -- which generated just 2% of revenue in its latest quarter -- could also gain more traction as the automotive sector gradually recovers and develops new connected and autonomous vehicles.Look beyond Nvidia's market capNvidia probably won't become a trillion-dollar company by 2025, and investors who were spoiled by its 380% rally over the past three years might be a bit disappointed. The Q3 (December quarter) mediocre revenue growth mirrors these dynamics.</p><p>Revenue Trends</p><p>Alibaba investors should prepare for volatile quarterly results this May. Realizing the rough patch ahead, Munger shrank his position, and you should consider doing the same. As always, be careful using leverage. This would make a solid contrarian strategy, especially for those with a stomach to sit on losses for long periods of time, if it wasn&#39;t for the fundamental, long-term revenue disruption impacting Alibaba.</p><p>The China e-commerce &#34;CEC&#34; segment constitutes 70% of Alibaba&#39;s revenue. Annual active users now stand at 937 million against a total population of 1.4 billion, with 260 million below the age of 15, pointing to a saturated market. Last quarter, CEC grew 7%, a disappointing figure given it includes inorganic growth from the Sun Art acquisition, mirroring demographic challenges facing its core segment.</p><p>Management is trying to find growth in rural China. However, sales data from its competitor, Pinduoduo Inc. (PDD), which focuses on this market and posts 900 million annual active users, points to a weak purchasing power that is not enough to create meaningful growth.</p><p>The same goes for cloud computing and international markets, which, together with rural China expansion, represent the company&#39;s official growth strategy. The Cloud and International Segment represent 8% and 7% of total revenue. For these segments to compensate for a 10% decrease in core operations, both need to grow by 50% just for revenue to remain constant, still a hard-to-swallow proposition for a growth-hungry shareholder base.</p><p>I don&#39;t believe that those buying the dip had enough time to analyze and study the company&#39;s revenue trends and drivers. Alibaba&#39;s fall was abrupt, accelerated by a brutal anti-monopoly crackdown that permanently changed the IT competitive landscape in favor of smaller peers. While new investors are showing courage in buying the dip, management is terrified, as reflected in merchant subsidies, which dragged net income 74% last quarter in an unsustainable attempt to maintain revenue and users.</p><p>Cash Flow And Share Buybacks</p><p>Fundamentally, Alibaba&#39;s business model is sound, generating lucrative, scalable operating cash flows that encouraged the e-commerce giant to extend a share buyback program last month. Alibaba&#39;s challenges stem from its inability to manage investors&#39; expectations. Historically, Alibaba attracted a growth-oriented shareholder base, and now that its core operations are maturing, management is finding it hard to communicate its transitionary state to shareholders. A few weeks ago, Kevin O&#39;Leary was touting his new Alibaba position, citing the growth potential of Chinese tech. The three names I figured were going to move lower for the week -- MicroStrategy, Hooker Furnishings, and Blink Charging -- finished down 1%, up 1%, and down 4%, respectively, averaging out to a 1.3% decline.The S&P 500 declined 2.1% for the week, so while I may have been correct about the stocks to avoid, the market fared worse; I lost. Let's go over my near-term concerns.TeslaI happen to personally own two of the three stocks in this week's column, making this a bittersweet list. Tesla is a name I've owned for more than a year, but I think the next-generation automaker isn't at its best when CEO Elon Musk is distracted. He's distracted right now.Tesla reports its first-quarter financials on Wednesday. Your guess is as good as mine if Musk chose April 20 (4/20, a common reference to cannabis) intentionally as the earnings date; mad wealth can make you juvenile. We already know that car deliveries for the quarter came in slightly below market expectations.Demand remains strong for Tesla's entry-level cars, and high gasoline prices are only helping. However, the stock's lofty valuation -- at a time when supply-chain constraints are real and cost controls are hard to come by -- means this is a tricky time to own the country's fifth-most-valuable company by market cap.Sleep NumberThe other stock I own -- and it's also reporting fresh financials this week -- is Sleep Number. The company's product is unique in a world of cookie-cutter mattresses: It makes air-chambered mattresses with adjustable firmness settings. It even has a neat hook with the Sleep Number 360 smart bed it rolled out a couple of years ago, a high-tech air cloud that can adjust firmness settings and even elevation as it senses restlessness.Sleep Number sales took off in the early months of the pandemic as homebound folks paid a premium for a good night's sleep. Sales have slowed lately, and the company's last quarter was a disaster. Revenue declined 13%, as the late arrival of semiconductor components delayed more than $125 million of net sales. Sleep Number claims sales would've been positive without the supply-chain hiccup, and even with the setback, revenue still climbed 18% for all of 2021.Sleep Number reports its first-quarter results after Wednesday's market close. Analysts don't expect the data to be pretty; they're bracing for a 7% decline in revenue and an 86% plunge in earnings per share. (Investors might have expected the late arrival of parts in the previous quarter to help boost results this time around.)It gets worse: Sleep Number has fallen short of Wall Street profit targets in two of the past three reports. Shares are cheap using most measuring sticks, and I'm a long-term bull on the stock. I just feel there's a lot for Sleep Number to prove with this week's report.Lucid GroupIf I'm going with Tesla on this list, I may as well double down on another electric-vehicle maker that's well behind Tesla on the growth trajectory. Come on down, Lucid Motors.Its flagship model, Lucid Air, turned heads late last year when it was named MotorTrend's Car of the Year. But will it be able to scale fast enough to justify Lucid's nearly $35 billion market value? Bulls will argue that growth is about to shift to a higher gear, but Lucid is still at least three years away from turning the corner to profitability. A lot can and will happen between now and then, especially as the more established automakers flood the market with electric versions of their more popular rides.Right now Lucid Air has a starting price of $77,400, so it's aiming for a higher-end niche market. It also hasn't increased its starting price since announcing the cost of its base model six months ago, suggesting it may not have the pricing elasticity of other automakers that have bumped prices higher over that time. If Tesla offers a foggy outlook, investors will likely take a step back from other electric-car stocks.It's going to be a bumpy road for some of these investments. As travelers sought to avoid crowds during the pandemic, those with the means turned to options like private jets.</p><p>Arnie Weissman, editor-in-chief of Travel Weekly, says the pandemic opened luxury travel to a wider customer base. \"Some people developed a taste for it, and it's likely to continue.\"</p><p>Kim-Marie Evans, who writes the blog \"Luxury Travel Moms\" and plans travel for high-net-worth clients, told IBD she booked a trip for a family to Anguilla.</p><p>They stayed in a four-bedroom villa at the Four Seasons. And rather than flying commercially, they used a private jet service.</p><p>Private jet bookings are at or near their pre-pandemic highs, according to Elite Traveler, citing industry tracker FlightAware's data.</p><p>In May, private jet company Wheels Up said membership jumped 58% in Q1 to nearly 10,000. And VistaJet, another leading private jet company, said membership climbed 29% from a year ago.</p><p>Private jet leasing company NetJets, which is owned by <b>Berkshire Hathaway</b>, says its flight volume dropped to as low as 10% of 2019 numbers at the start of the pandemic.</p><p>Now the company, which also offers fractional ownership of its jets, says it's operating at 85% of its 2019 volume. NetJets said in a statement that commercial airlines have reduced their schedules. Consumers also are prioritizing their health and safety, choosing the seclusion of a private jet over a packed jetliner.</p><h2><b>Vacation Shift Favors These Travel Stocks</b></h2><p>Hotel chains implemented stringent Covid-19 protocols to convince visitors their properties were clean and safe. Still, many travelers opted to rent private homes through Airbnb, where they could avoid mingling with strangers in hotel lobbies, Weismann says.</p><p>Travel trends favor Airbnb stock long term, though it currently is slumping. On May 27, analysts at RBC Capital Markets rated shares at outperform, citing secular tailwinds that have yet to be fully appreciated by the market such as its dominant customer engagement.</p><p>The pandemic also shed light on the market potential of travel stocks like Marriott, which operates home-rental service Homes &amp; Villas by Marriott International, catering to ultra premium short- and long-term stays, CFRA Research analyst Tuna Amobi says.</p><p>The Homes &amp; Villas platform, which offers professionally managed private homes, had around 2,000 units at launch less than two years ago. Today, it lists nearly 25,000 properties.</p><p>\"They're where we don't have hotels, and many of them are in more remote locations, which really was quite attractive during Covid,\" said Marriott International President Stephanie Linnartz in a recent call with investors.</p><p>Airbnb also finds that customers are visiting smaller cities, towns and rural communities — not the same 20-30 cities that were most popular pre-pandemic. People are traveling outside the peak seasons and staying longer.</p><p>\"There is a mass shift from mass travel to meaningful travel,\" CEO Chesky said.</p><h2><b>Seaworthy Travel Stocks </b></h2><p>Luxury cruising should also come back with a bang. Nearly every cruise line's around-the-world luxury voyage is fully booked two years in advance.</p><p>One cruise line, Silversea, said its 139-day around-the-world cruise sold out in a single day. The Monaco-based cruise line is owned by Royal Caribbean. The cruise costs between $74,000 and $278,000 per guest, based on double occupancy. That compares with typical fares that start at $15,000-$20,000.</p><p>But others heading out to sea want to avoid crowded ships, which have seen outbreaks of coronavirus and other infections. The National Marine Manufacturers Association says new powerboat sales surged 34% in February compared to the same time period last year.</p><p>\"Inventory levels of new boats are the leanest they've ever been, and boats are being sold as soon as they hit the marketplace as manufacturers work to fulfill the backlog of orders,\" said Vicky Yu, senior director of business intelligence for NMMA. \"While new boat sales slowed in early 2021 following record sales last year, we are still seeing elevated levels as more Americans seek out boating as a way to spend quality time with loved ones.\"</p><p>The trend has pushed up leisure and travel stocks like boat retailers MarineMax and Brunswick&nbsp;as well as sport boat maker <b>Malibu Boats</b>.</p><p>\"It's really turning out to be a great alternative for people to stay close to home and with their family and friends and enjoy the boating lifestyle,\" MarineMax CFO Michael McLamb said in a conference call after reporting earnings April 22.</p><h2><b>Travel Stocks For Being Alone Together</b></h2><p>The desire to spend more time with friends and family is also spurring RV sales. They exploded in popularity during the pandemic, and sales data this year show demand remains high.</p><p>\"The rediscovery of America will continue this summer,\" Weissman said.</p><p>The pandemic accelerated long-term trends favoring the outdoors, Winnebago CEO Michael Happe said in a March earnings call. That includes power sports, boating and RVs.</p><p>Consumer priorities have changed, he added, toward a desire to invest in experiences vs. possessions.</p><p>\"We also believe the time (spent) recently with family and friends has reinforced that they'd like to do more of that in the future,\" Happe said. \"And families and individuals will be reevaluating how they spend their leisure time going forward.\"</p><p>Airbnb pointed to another sign of this trend among leisure and travel stocks. Instead of booking studio apartments in cities, more customers are booking entire homes with more bedrooms. As a result, the number of guests per reservation has increased.</p><h2><b>Work-Life Rebalance</b></h2><p>As people pay closer attention to their well-being post-Covid, another trend to watch is high-end wellness tourism with a focus on fitness, rejuvenation and health, Weissman says. That includes yoga and spa getaways as well as packages that offer cycling and hiking activities.</p><p>Meanwhile, the work-from-home shift allowed people to rethink other aspects of their lifestyle. In particular, they can try to balance work, leisure and travel differently.</p><p>Wedbush analyst James Hardiman says \"2020 was proof of concept that people can be productive, even more productive, while working remotely.\"</p><p>Airbnb says the share of bookings longer than 28 days jumped to 24% in Q1 from 14% in 2019. The company doesn't consider this travel.</p><p>\"People are not just traveling on Airbnb,\" Chesky said. \"They're now living on Airbnb.\"</p><h2>Future Of Business Travel?</h2><p>That also has implications for business travel, which is the most lucrative segment for travel stocks like airlines.</p><p>Experts say fewer workers may fly for <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-day intracompany meetings. However, more crucial business will still require people to fly for in-person meetings.</p><p>When it's time to show up in person, Airbnb expects workers will travel together more often. That trend also has ramifications for Airbnb stock and others. Employees who work in different cities might stay in <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> house when they visit headquarters. (NOKIA.HE) and GameStop Corp. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GME\">$(GME)$</a>.)</p>\n<p><b>Short squeezes and meme stocks</b></p>\n<p>Traders looking to group together on social media to make quick killings by pushing up share prices of companies at early stages or those going through difficult times have been setting up short squeezes.</p>\n<p>Professional investors have traditionally short-sold shares of companies they believe will perform worse than most other investors or analysts expect. Shorting means borrowing a company's shares and selling them immediately, in the hope of buying them back at a lower price, returning them to the lender and pocketing the difference. If you simply buy a stock hoping it will go up, all you risk is the money you invest. You might get wiped out. But if you short a stock, your risk potential is unlimited. You never know how high the price might rise if you have gotten the trade wrong.</p>\n<p>\"Covering\" a short position is when you buy back the shares to return them to the investor who lent them to you. You are hoping to cover at a lower price than you sold the shares for, to make a profit.</p>\n<p>To have a short position, you need to have a margin account with a broker -- an account that lets you borrow to invest or trade. Because of the risk in taking a short position, if the share price goes against you (higher), your broker will keep increasing its collateral requirements. If you run out of cash as the price keeps rising, you will be forced to cover at a loss. That type of action among a large group of short-sellers pushes the price higher in a spiral -- a short squeeze.</p>\n<p><b>Six more meme stocks</b></p>\n<p>The action changes daily. On June 9, for example, shares of Clover Health Investments Corp. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CLOV\">$(CLOV)$</a> fell 24% after rising 86% the day before. Is the SEC watching?</p>\n<p>Here are the six additional meme stocks, following our initial group of eight , sorted by market capitalization as of the close on June 9:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/45b4fabbee4e18ee1b473200ab3a7c4b\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"300\"></p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PLTR\">Palantir Technologies Inc.</a> (PLTR) provides a software platform used by government defense and intelligence agencies. It is the largest company on the list by market cap, but not by revenue, as you can see below. A year-to-date chart of its price performance shows how wild the meme-stock action can be:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1d9a8e2dfc61b0e4ff70a8630193cecb\" tg-width=\"1259\" tg-height=\"1038\"></p>\n<p>Palantir's stock was up 3% for 2021 through June 9, but its market cap had increased by 26% because the company had been raising cash by selling additional shares to investors. The company's following as a meme stock seems to spring more from its growth prospects than from short interest, which peaked at 8.5% of shares available for sale, according to FactSet.</p>\n<p>Wendy's Co. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WEN\">$(WEN)$</a> is another meme stock whose addition to the group may be a bit confusing, as the stock isn't heavily shorted and the company is stable. Thornton McEnery dug into the action on June 8, which may have included confusion over Wendy's ticker symbol , when the stock rose 26%.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WISH\">ContextLogic Inc.</a> (WISH) is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of two stocks on the new list that have fallen this year. The mobile e-commerce company's stock opened below its initial public offering price before the IPO.</p>\n<p><b>Short interest</b></p>\n<p>Keeping the group in the same order, here are levels of short interest as percentages of available shares and in dollars:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d0875b54168c760b950d250308eb5efd\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"390\"></p>\n<p>FactSet's data on short positions as a percentage of shares outstanding is updated twice a month. The data was updated overnight between June 9 and 10. The second update takes place around the 25th day of the month.</p>\n<p>Clover is the most heavily shorted stock on the list. Brad Lamensdorf, CEO of ActiveAlts in Westport, Conn., who runs long and short investment strategies, said previously that a short percentage \"over 30% to 40% is outrageously high.\" (Lamensdorf co-manages the AdvisorShares <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/HDGE\">Ranger Equity Bear ETF</a> (HDGE), which is meant to be used as a hedging tool.)</p>\n<p>A high percentage of shares sold short makes a stock especially dangerous for the short-sellers, because it can increase the intensity of any short squeeze.</p>\n<p>We have shown the short interest as a percentage of market cap in order to provide context. Tesla Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TSLA\">$(TSLA)$</a> is an excellent example to provide more context, because the company has such a large market capitalization of $576.8 billion. Only 5.16% of the shares are sold short, but that comes to $29.8 billion in short interest -- the most (in dollars) for any stock in the S&amp;P 500. Amazon.com Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMZN\">$(AMZN)$</a> ranks second for dollars of short interest in the benchmark index, with 1.09% of shares sold short, which comes to $18.1 billion in short interest for a company with a market cap of $1.66 trillion.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GOEV\">Canoo Inc.</a> (GOEV) is the second-most heavily shorted stock listed above, at 29.5%. The electric-vehicle maker was formed on Dec. 21 through the merger of Canoo Holdings Ltd. and Hennessy Capital Acquisition Corp. IV, a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. Canoo expects to produce its first vehicle in mid-2022 in limited quantities, with \"serial production launching in 2023,\" according to its 10-K report filed on March 31.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CLNE\">Clean Energy Fuels Corp</a>. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CLNE.AU\">$(CLNE.AU)$</a> provides natural gas for use as an alternative to gasoline or diesel for fleets of vehicles. The stock is 6.58% sold-short, but has had a good run this year as the energy sector has recovered.</p>\n<p><b>Fundamentals</b></p>\n<p>We'll look back at sales results for this group of six meme stocks and then look ahead at sales estimates through 2023.</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>Looking back</b></li>\n</ul>\n<p>First, here's a comparison of annual sales, in millions of dollars for the past five reported fiscal years (where available):</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bcc4fbd762406f0684e991d289b8b760\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"392\"></p>\n<p>You can see clear growth paths in recent years for Palantir, Wendy's and ContextLogic, while Clean Energy Fuels had understandable challenges from lower natural gas prices in 2020.</p>\n<p>Clover was incorporated on Oct. 18, 2019. It hasn't yet reported annual revenue. For the first quarter, the company reported $200.3 million in sales, up from $165.5 million in the first quarter of 2020. Clover merged with <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/IPOC.U\">Social Capital Hedosophia Holdings Corp. III</a> (a SPAC) on Jan. 7.</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>Looking ahead -- sales</b></li>\n</ul>\n<p>Starting from a baseline of calendar 2021, here are sales estimates going out through 2023 among Wall Street analysts polled by FactSet:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/37c11916067fb3829caff57a89cf17f0\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"380\"></p>\n<p>Double-digit or better sales growth is expected for all of the companies over the next two years except Wendy's. Price-to-sale ratios, based on closing share prices on June 9 and the 2023 estimates, are included. In comparison, the S&amp;P 500 trades for 2.5 times its weighted aggregate consensus sales estimate for 2023.</p>\n<p><b>Looking ahead -- earnings</b></p>\n<p>Here are earnings-per-share estimates going out to 2023:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4cf06aa00f9303dda82b1c3f8cf34c21\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"500\"></p>\n<p>You might not have expected the EPS projections to be particularly useful, but they underscore how high these stocks are trading. The S&amp;P 500 trades for 18.4 times its consensus EPS estimate for 2023.</p>\n<p>The estimates show expected improvement for Palantir, if it manages to maintain its rapid sales growth. It would mark the worst intraday sell-off in U.S. history at the time, a record that would stand until 1929.\nThe Panic of 1893 was triggered in part by falling gold reserves in the U.S. Treasury. At the time, the U.S. was on the gold standard, meaning U.S. dollars could be redeemed for physical gold.
