TSMC's record quarter really puts the spotlight on how tight advanced chipmaking capacity has become as AI demand keeps outpacing supply. The company produces most of the world's leading AI processors for Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom, while Apple, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and OpenAI also rely on its facilities for custom AI chips. TSMC's North American CEO gets at least 10 inquiries a day about wafer capacity.

TSMC posted record profit for a sixth straight quarter and expects Q4 revenue to rise 58% year over year. That said, capacity constraints could put AI infrastructure spending and aggressive growth targets at risk, with U.S. hyperscalers planning more than $700 billion in capex this year and further increases expected in 2027.

Chipmakers are locking in supply through long-term contracts and close relationships with TSMC executives.
