Many economists worry these actions will inadvertently tip the economy into a recession, and that fear led to a sweeping downturn in the stock market. As a result, the three major U.S. indexes -- the S&P 500, the Nasdaq Composite, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average -- all dropped into a bear market earlier this year.But it's not all bad news. Inflation has now decelerated for four consecutive months and 30% of economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal think the Fed will start lowering rates by the fourth quarter of 2023, while another 28% expect rates to fall by the first quarter of 2024. Those trends could repair investor sentiment and bring about a new bull market. But even if that timeline fails to pan out, patient investors still have reason to be optimistic.Every past bear market eventually ends in a new bull market, and there's no reason to believe this one's any different. In the meantime, quality stocks like Microsoft and PayPal Holdings are trading 29% and 59% off their highs, respectively. That creates a buying opportunity for these two top growth stocks.1. Microsoft: A provider of mission-critical software and cloud servicesMicrosoft is the foundation on which hundreds of thousands of businesses are built. Windows is the leading operating system for personal computers and data center servers, and Office 365 is the gold standard in productivity suites. But Microsoft has also carved out a strong position in other business software markets. For instance, Dynamics 365 ranks among the most popular enterprise resource planning (ERP) platforms, and the ERP software market is expected to grow at 11% annually to reach $123 billion by 2030, according to Grand View Research.Despite the uncertain economic environment, Microsoft reported decent financial results over the past year. Revenue climbed 15% to $203 billion, and free cash flow rose 5% to $63 billion. Unfortunately, management issued disappointing guidance for the second quarter of fiscal 2023 (which ends Dec. 31, 2022), citing weakness in its Windows and advertising businesses. But those troubles stem from high inflation, which is ultimately a temporary headwind. There are still plenty of reasons for shareholders to be optimistic.For instance, research company Gartner recognized Microsoft as a leader in several cybersecurity verticals, including endpoint protection, access management, and security information and event management. Better yet, Microsoft grew its security customer base by 33% to 860,000 in Q1 of fiscal 2023, and its strong market presence means the company should benefit greatly as the cybersecurity market continues to grow. Grand View Research says cybersecurity spend will increase at 12% annually to reach $500 billion by the end of the decade.Microsoft Azure is the second largest public cloud, and it's gaining market share due to expertise in database systems, developer tools, machine learning software, and hybrid computing solutions. In the most recent quarter, Azure accounted for 22% of global cloud infrastructure spend, up from 21% in the prior year. That momentum positions Microsoft to be a key player in cloud computing for years to come, and the market is expected to grow at 16% annually to reach $1.6 trillion by 2030.Finally, Microsoft acquired ad tech company Xandr last year, and that move helped it score a major partnership with Netflix this year. Microsoft is the exclusive ad tech vendor behind Netflix's new ad-supported tier of its streaming service. That could make the company a key player in online video advertising, a market that will grow at 14% annually to reach $362 billion by 2027, according to research company Omdia.Microsoft has several large market opportunities, and shareholders can reasonably expect double-digit sales growth through the end of the decade. Shares look reasonably priced at 9.1 times sales. That's why this growth stock is a buy.2. PayPal: The most accepted digital wallet in North America and EuropePayPal operates a two-sided payments network that provides financial services to businesses and individuals. Its merchant-facing platform enables businesses to engage buyers, accept payments, and prevent fraud across physical and digital stores. And its consumer-facing digital wallets enable users to discover shopping deals, earn interest, access credit, and spend money online and in person.That two-sided strategy sets PayPal apart from most payment processors. It gives the company insight into consumer behavior and shopping preferences, which can drive sales for merchants. More broadly, it allowed PayPal to build trust on both sides of the transaction, and trust is crucial in the financial industry. According to management, consumers are \"two times more likely to shop\" when PayPal is a checkout option.Those advantages put PayPal in rarified air. It's the most accepted digital wallet in North America and Europe, and it was the most downloaded mobile finance app worldwide in the first half of 2022, according to Apptopia.After a rocky start to the year, PayPal recently reported solid third-quarter results. Revenue increased 11% year over year to $6.8 billion, and free cash flow climbed 37% to $1.8 billion. But the most exciting updates were the new ties with Apple and Amazon. By year-end, merchants will be able to use Apple's Tap-to-Pay service within the PayPal and Venmo iOS apps, and people will be able to add PayPal- and Venmo-branded payment cards to their Apple Wallets in 2023. The retailer recorded a charge of nearly $3.33 billion, or $1.05 a share, as part of an opioid settlement.</p><h2>‘Pocketbooks are stretched’</h2><p>Shoppers are watching how they spend, Walmart Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said. They are buying less-expensive proteins such as hot dogs, beans and peanut butter instead of pricier meats. They are waiting for sales events to buy items like TVs and air fryers and are spending less in the apparel and home categories.</p><p>“Pocketbooks are stretched,” he said. “People have less discretionary income or less disposable income to spend on things — and so they’re looking for value.”</p><p>The discounter also made progresswith an industry-wide headache: a glut of excess inventory. Walmart’s inventory was up 13% year over year in the third quarter. That’s down from 25% in the second quarter and 32% in the first quarter.</p><p>Rainey said Walmart has canceled orders, increased markdowns and cleared through the backlog of merchandise stuck at ports. He said about 70% of the inventory increase is from inflation rather than more units.</p><p>“From a unit perspective, we find ourselves in a much, much better place than we did in the first part of the year,” he said.</p><p>Comparable sales for Walmart U.S. rose 8.2%, excluding fuel. The key retail metric includes sales from Walmart stores and clubs open for the at least a year, including remodels, relocations and expansions.</p><p>Walmart is navigating a more challenging backdrop as it gears up for the holidays. Inflation is near a four-decade high, driving up the prices of housing, gas and more. Competitors are dangling deep discounts to try to clear through excess inventory. And consumers are spending again on travel, dining out and other experiences.</p><p>As inflation runs hot, however, the big-box retailer has attracted higher-income shoppers. About 75% of its market share gains in food came from households that make more than $100,000 a year, Rainey said. They are buying less-expensive proteins such as hot dogs, beans and peanut butter instead of pricier meats. They are waiting for sales events to buy items like TVs and air fryers and are spending less in the apparel and home categories.</p><p>“Pocketbooks are stretched,” he said. “People have less discretionary income or less disposable income to spend on things — and so they’re looking for value.”</p><p>The discounter also made progresswith an industry-wide headache: a glut of excess inventory. Walmart’s inventory was up 13% year over year in the third quarter. And while it has become one of the leading smartphones on the market, new releases of the iPhone still generate quite a lot of buzz -- more than 14 years after it was first introduced. Perhaps more importantly, iPhone models continue to generate robust sales for the tech company.During Apple's fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2021, which ended on Sept. 25, 2021, Apple generated $38.9 billion in sales from its iPhone segment, representing a 47% jump compared to the year-ago period. Some analysts had predicted that excitement surrounding new iPhone releases would eventually die down, and sales of the products would plummet as a result.True, new releases of the product no longer produce the level of enthusiasm they did back in the late 2000s, but even after all these years, the iPhone lives on, and in a big way.Image source: Getty Images.2. Apple's booming services segmentOver the past five years, Apple's services unit has become increasingly important. The company records revenue associated with subscription-based (and other) services in this segment. It includes Apple TV+ revenue, iCloud-related services, Apple Pay, and many other things. During the company's fiscal year 2021, this business was the second largest in sales, only behind the iPhone segment.Apple's services revenue came in at $68.4 billion for the year, growing 27.3% compared to the fiscal year 2020. One major perk of this unit is that it boasts juicier margins than the rest of Apple's business. In its fiscal year 2021, the company's gross margin was 41.8%. Apple's product gross margin came in at 35.3%, compared to 69.7% for its services unit.As the tech giant continues to grow this segment, it will have an increasingly positive impact on its bottom line. And that bodes well for the company's future.3. Brand names matterCompanies that survive the test of time tend to have one thing in common: a competitive advantage. Of course, that can come in many different forms, be it from high switching costs, the network effect, or intangible assets such as patents and copyrights. Apple also has a solid competitive edge, namely its brand name (an intangible asset).Businesses with solid reputations and influential brand names continue to attract customers even when they face strong competitors with similar or exchangeable products. Apple routinely ranks near (or at) the top in lists of companies with the most valuable brand names. For instance, in Forbes' 2020 iteration of its annual ranking, Apple came in at number 1.At this point, the company could sell almost anything at a premium by merely branding it with its prized logo. That's something that will help maintain the company's lead over its peers while it keeps delivering solid returns for its shareholders.Don't jump off this shipEvery company faces obstacles, and Apple has recently encountered its share of headwinds. Most notably, the company's supply chain issues have hindered its ability to meet the demand for certain products. Apple is managing to perform well despite these struggles, but competitive pressures and regulatory problems in countries such as China could weigh on the company in the future.Investors shouldn't ignore these issues and others that could arise. However, even with these caveats taken into account, Apple's overall business looks rock-solid. Considering the company has such a stronghold on the market, its price to sales (P/S) ratio of 7.6 looks more than reasonable when compared to the broader tech sector's P/S of 30.8. It may be difficult to believe that the California-based company still has significant room to grow at these levels.But lots of things that are hard to believe are true, and although Apple has smoked the broader market in the past decade, there remains plenty of fuel left in its growth engine. Let's look at three reasons why the tech juggernaut is worth buying and holding onto for a very long time.AAPL data by YCharts1. iPhone sales are still going strongApple's signature device, the iPhone, was first released in 2007. And while it has become one of the leading smartphones on the market, new releases of the iPhone still generate quite a lot of buzz -- more than 14 years after it was first introduced. Perhaps more importantly, iPhone models continue to generate robust sales for the tech company.During Apple's fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2021, which ended on Sept. 25, 2021, Apple generated $38.9 billion in sales from its iPhone segment, representing a 47% jump compared to the year-ago period. Some analysts had predicted that excitement surrounding new iPhone releases would eventually die down, and sales of the products would plummet as a result.True, new releases of the product no longer produce the level of enthusiasm they did back in the late 2000s, but even after all these years, the iPhone lives on, and in a big way.Image source: Getty Images.2. Apple's booming services segmentOver the past five years, Apple's services unit has become increasingly important. The company records revenue associated with subscription-based (and other) services in this segment. It includes Apple TV+ revenue, iCloud-related services, Apple Pay, and many other things. During the company's fiscal year 2021, this business was the second largest in sales, only behind the iPhone segment.Apple's services revenue came in at $68.4 billion for the year, growing 27.3% compared to the fiscal year 2020. One major perk of this unit is that it boasts juicier margins than the rest of Apple's business. In its fiscal year 2021, the company's gross margin was 41.8%. Apple's product gross margin came in at 35.3%, compared to 69.7% for its services unit.As the tech giant continues to grow this segment, it will have an increasingly positive impact on its bottom line. And that bodes well for the company's future.3. Brand names matterCompanies that survive the test of time tend to have one thing in common: a competitive advantage. Of course, that can come in many different forms, be it from high switching costs, the network effect, or intangible assets such as patents and copyrights. Apple also has a solid competitive edge, namely its brand name (an intangible asset).Businesses with solid reputations and influential brand names continue to attract customers even when they face strong competitors with similar or exchangeable products. Apple routinely ranks near (or at) the top in lists of companies with the most valuable brand names. For instance, in Forbes' 2020 iteration of its annual ranking, Apple came in at number 1.At this point, the company could sell almost anything at a premium by merely branding it with its prized logo. That's something that will help maintain the company's lead over its peers while it keeps delivering solid returns for its shareholders.Don't jump off this shipEvery company faces obstacles, and Apple has recently encountered its share of headwinds. Most notably, the company's supply chain issues have hindered its ability to meet the demand for certain products. Apple is managing to perform well despite these struggles, but competitive pressures and regulatory problems in countries such as China could weigh on the company in the future.Investors shouldn't ignore these issues and others that could arise. However, even with these caveats taken into account, Apple's overall business looks rock-solid. Considering the company has such a stronghold on the market, its price to sales (P/S) ratio of 7.6 looks more than reasonable when compared to the broader tech sector's P/S of 30.8.
