You can see below that <b>Blink Charging</b> (BLNK -0.76%), <b>ChargePoint Holdings</b> (CHPT -2.01%), and <b>EVgo</b> (EVGO -2.33%) are all losing about as much as they&#39;re making in revenue right now.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6de3f04602128e583e1e5eeabacad000\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"387\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>BLNK Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts</p><p>These companies are investing in growth, but they&#39;re doing so at an unsustainable rate. And it&#39;s not clear there will be a profitable market for them when they reach maturity.</p><h2>There&#39;s no moat in EV charging</h2><p>Ask yourself why you would choose one charger over another. The plugs are the same, the electricity is the same, there&#39;s literally no difference between one charger and the next.</p><p>This makes the charging business a commodity, whether you&#39;re selling physical chargers or electricity to customers directly. We&#39;ve seen that with <b>General Motors</b>&#39; (GM 0.83%) partnership with seven charging networks to service GM vehicles. GM will create the app for vehicles to find chargers and collect payment, and users will essentially be offered white-label charging from companies like Blink, ChargePoint, and EVgo.</p><p>If electricity wasn&#39;t readily available and chargers didn&#39;t use common plugs, there may be more potential for a moat to form. But the industry is moving toward commodification of almost everything about charging.</p><h2>The business model is unclear at best</h2><p>What&#39;s the right business model for EV charging companies? Do they just sell chargers and let manufacturers, retailers, and even gas stations put their own logos on chargers? Do they build out networks in the hopes of attracting customers to charge with them?</p><p>I actually think chargers will become such a commodity that they&#39;ll be a feature to draw customers to restaurants, retailers, and malls. Why stop at one fast food spot over another on a road trip? What if one has chargers? The same benefit can be given to shoppers at big-box retailers or malls.</p><p>No matter the business model that succeeds, it&#39;s hard to see how charging companies will be able to justify their current valuations.</p><h2>A market to stay away from</h2><p>EV charging stocks continue to have high valuations, but their financials are terrible, they don&#39;t have a moat, and it&#39;s not even clear what a successful business model will be long-term. Amazon projected revenue of $106 billion to $112 billion for the third quarter, which would represent a sequential decline and a year-over-year gain of just 10% to 16%.</p>\n<p>Some have feared that&nbsp;Amazon would suffer when the economy reopened, and that seems to be consistent with what the company itself is projecting. That said, Amazon has defied naysayers before, so it's too early to count on the e-commerce giant just yet.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, shares of Pinterest took a double-hit on Thursday. After falling 6% in the regular session, the social media company's stock saw an even bigger 16% drop after hours.</p>\n<p>Again, Pinterest's numbers generally looked stellar on their face. Revenue soared 125% year over year to&nbsp; $613 million. The company reversed a year-ago loss with adjusted net income of $170 million, working out to $0.25 per share. Although user growth slowed to just 9%, average revenue per user was sharply higher, doubling both in the U.S. and internationally.</p>\n<p>Yet Pinterest also cited an uncertain future in its guidance. The social media company believes revenue growth will slow to about 40% in the third quarter, and it said that reduced user growth has continued in July. U.S. monthly active user counts actually<i>fell</i>in the second quarter, and those declines accelerated in July.</p>\n<p>Investors had high expectations for Pinterestcoming into the quarterly report, so it's not terribly surprising to see the stock pull back after releasing results that weren't able to get over a high bar. Revenue soared 125% year over year to  $613 million. The company reversed a year-ago loss with adjusted net income of $170 million, working out to $0.25 per share. Although user growth slowed to just 9%, average revenue per user was sharply higher, doubling both in the U.S. and internationally.\nYet Pinterest also cited an uncertain future in its guidance. The social media company believes revenue growth will slow to about 40% in the third quarter, and it said that reduced user growth has continued in July. Annual S&amp;P 500 earnings growth was recently estimated to be 6.1%, down from 7.5% at the beginning of the year.</p><p>CrowdStrike Holdings Inc rose 3.2% after Goldman Sachs upgraded the cybersecurity company&#39;s shares to &#34;buy&#34;, citing elevated demand.</p><p>Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 1.07-to-1 ratio; Unity is an advanced game development engine that powers over half of the world's mobile, PC, and console games.</p>\n<p>Roblox encourages users to monetize their games with an in-app currency called Robux within its walled garden. Unity offers developers more flexible tools for integrating in-app ads, in-app purchases, and other features into their games.</p>\n<p>The bulls claim Roblox's self-sustaining cycle of content creation, self-promotion, and monetization will fuel its long-term growth. The bears will point out that half of the platform's daily active users (DAUs) are under the age of 13, and they might eventually grow out of Roblox's simple experiences or graduate to a more advanced game development engine like Unity.</p>\n<p>The bulls will point to Roblox's growth rates. Between the first quarters of 2018 and 2021, Roblox's DAUs more than quadrupled from 10.3 million to 42.1 million, its total hours engaged surged from 2.1 billion to 9.7 billion, and its average bookings per DAU jumped from $11.62 to $15.48.</p>\n<p>Roblox's revenue rose 56% in 2019, soared 82% in 2020, and analysts expect 167% growth this year. Economic comeback plays led the market losses.\nFor the week, the 30-stock Dow lost 3.5%. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were down by 1.9% and 0.2%, respectively, week to date.\nSt. Louis Federal Reserve President Jim Bullardtold CNBC's \"Squawk Box\"on Friday it was natural for the Fed to tilt a little \"hawkish\" this week and that the first rate increase from the central bank would likely come in 2022. His comments came after the Fed on Wednesday added two rate hikes to its 2023 forecast and increased its inflation projection for the year, putting pressure on stock prices.\n\"The fear held by some investors is that if the Fed tightens policy sooner than expected to help cool inflationary pressures, this could weigh on future economic growth,\" Truist Advisory Services chief market strategist Keith Lerner said in a note.
