The heavyweight tech sector(.SPLRCT)fell while the healthcare sector(.SPXHC)was dragged down by a weak profit forecast from Abbott Laboratories(ABT.N).Data showed U.S.manufacturing activity pickedup in May as pent-up demand in a reopening economy boosted orders. But unfinished work piled up because of shortages of raw materials and labor.\"People came back from a holiday weekend convinced that the economy is recovering nicely and that any inflation that we might be seeing in labor and other costs is temporary,\" Peter Tuz, president of Chase Investment Counsel in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Dow Jones Industrial Average(.DJI)rose 45.86 points, or 0.13%, to 34,575.31; the S&P 500(.SPX)lost 2.07 points, or 0.05%, at 4,202.04; and the Nasdaq Composite(.IXIC)dropped 12.26 points, or 0.09%, to 13,736.48.Along with sharp gains for financials and energy, the small-cap Russell 2000(.RUT)rose 1.1% on Tuesday, underscoring strength for segments of the stock market expected to do particularly well in an expanding economy. While the S&P 500 remains less than 1% of its record high after four straight months of gains, investors are worried about whether rising inflation could hit equity prices.\"We have supply chain issues, delays, price increases, pricing pressures in general, we have got employers saying they have got difficulty sourcing labor,\" said Kristina Hooper, chief global market strategist at Invesco in New York.\"So this is a microcosm of what we are already hearing about and seeing in the overall economy and it's just a reminder that inflation remains a concern.\"A Wall St. sign is seen near the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., May 4, 2021. But one that is particularly maddening to me is the notion that the stock market can ever be “ready” for a correction.
\n
Not only is there an abundance of research that proves the folly of market timing to avoid downturns, but such statements seem to indicate you can easily predict market moves in general — and all you have to do is identify the forecast and you can ensure you’re early rather than late to a trend.
\n
As we all know, particularly after the remarkable COVID-19 disruptions and equally remarkable snap-back rally, there are never any certainties on Wall Street. So before you stick a fork in the current rally and write it off as overdone, here are plenty of reasons to stay fully invested — and to expect the current rally for stocks to keep rolling through year-end.
\n
Strong momentum for stocks:In case you missed it, the S&P 500 index has just notched its fastest doubling in history as it has surged from lows of around 2,240 on March 23 to around 4,500 in August. It also already has set 50 closing records this year. This kind of record-breaking momentum clearly can’t last forever, but it is important not to conflate this strong performance with the assumption a correction is “overdue.” Generally speaking, stocks tend to move higher simply because they’re moving higher — not suddenly crash out of the blue.
\n
Earnings remain impressive:Companies across the S&P 500 have beat estimates by an average of more than 19% in the last five quarters. This has fueled a lot of the gains we’ve seen for stocks. Take tech darling Nvidia, which just popped about 14% in a week on a strong earnings beat, or sporting retailer Dick’s Sporting Goods, which surged about 20% in a single session after its strong report this week. Sentiment and technical indicators aside, it’s hard to argue that there’s not true improvement in fundamentals behind this recent run for stocks.
\n
Fed tapering fears abate:One of the bearish arguments some investors have had in 2021 is that the U.S. Federal Reserve is considering tapering stimulus efforts that include $120 billion in monthly bond purchases by the central bank, among other things. However, most reports indicate any such stimulus drawdown will not occur in the near term — perhaps not until November at the earliest. That may sound like bad news for those who are more hawkish on monetary policy, but it is undeniable good news for near-term market dynamics.
\n
Wall Street remains bullish:According to recent data, roughly 56% of analyst recommendations on S&P 500 stocks are “buy” or equivalent. That’s the most since 2002 and a sign that there is continued upside for the stock market even after an already impressive run. There’s no guarantee that the so-called “smart-money” is correct, of course, but it’s an important indicator nevertheless.
\n
Housing market “wealth effect”:Generally speaking, the typical American doesn’t have the majority of its wealth tied up in stocks. Rather, their home represents as much as two-thirds of their total assets — and as a result, their general perceptions of the economy and the investing environment tend to be colored by real estate more than anything else. That’s particularly good news in 2021 as housing prices continue to surge; in July, median home prices were up an impressive 18.4% over the prior year. That “wealth affect” can will go a long way toward supporting spending and investment sentiment in the months ahead.
\n
Core inflation vs. food and energy:It’s important to acknowledge that the chatter about inflation risks in 2021 often don’t include the full story. In July, the year-on-year inflation rate in the U.S. remained at a 20-year high of 5.4%, but when you skip food and energy prices that are historically quite volatile, the “core” monthly rate of inflation was just 0.3% in July — which isn’t just modest but below expectations of a 0.4% gain.
\n
Bigger picture, inflation doesn’t equal a bear market anyway:It’s also worth pointing out there is little direct correlation between relatively high inflation and relative low rates of returns for U.S. stocks. Take 2011, when headline inflation threatened to hit a 4% rate (again, driven largely by food and energy) and some investors feared that would upend the recovery from the 2008-2009 financial crisis. There was assuredly volatility that year, but stocks hung tough. The S&P 500 moved a few percentage points higher on the year — then gained nearly 15% in 2012 the following year.
\n
What’s the alternative now?:Despite inflationary talk, hard assets like gold haven’t been that great of a bet for investors looking to grow their nest egg. SPDR Gold Shares, the most liquid physical gold-backed fund out there, is actually in the red over the lasts 12 months and down about 5% from its May peak. And lest you think the bond market is safe, major bond fund iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF is actually down 10% in the last year — even as yields have rolled back from their spring highs. Gold or bonds may be nice hedges or insurance policies, but where else other than stocks can investors actually access growth on Wall Street right now?
\n
Most investors should ignore short-term trends anyhow:All of the above is based on the most recent headlines and trends. But for most investors, it pays to ignore those trends and stick with a long-term plan. According to Goldman Sachs research, stock market returns have averaged 9.2% per over the past 140 years. Sure, there are always a few extra bad years along the way — but if you stay invested long enough, you’re almost certain to come out significantly ahead. Keep that in mind before you try to time the next potential bear market because of short-term volatility fears.
","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The S&P 500 will keep going up this fall — for these 9 reasons
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nThe S&P 500 will keep going up this fall — for these 9 reasons\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-08-26 15:06 GMT+8 MarketWatch\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Despite chatter of a stock-market top, there is no proof a correction is ‘overdue’\nGETTY IMAGES\nThere are plenty of absurd arguments that investors make to justify their positions. China Concepts Stocks rose slightly in the pre-market trading.
\n
In the secondary market, there are two types of US funds willing to make investments in China. Thereinto, one of them has liquidated or been gradually liquidating their holdings. According to the daily operations of the Ark Funds, it has been reducing its positions in China Concepts Stocks including Tencent, and has never increased its positions, although the afore-mentioned stocks have rebounded to some extent recently. A more pleasing signal appeared lately is that the Ark Funds has stopped lightening up Chinese stocks.
\n
On July 1st, a total of 10 Chinese stocks listed in the U.S. are covered by the Ark Funds, including 8 China Concept Stocks and 2 Hong Kong stocks traded in U.S. over-the-counter (OTC). Based on the closing price of the day, these 10 stocks totaled $1.8 billion, as shown in the following figure.
\n

\n
About Its Positions
\n
As a fund that is not active enough to invest in Chinese stocks, it is hard to say that the size of $1.8-billion position is small. The largest mutual fund that invests in emerging markets is the Invesco Developing Markets Fund, which has an investment of $15 billion in China, covering China Concepts Stocks, Hong Kong Stocks and A shares. Therefore, Ark's investment in China is not trivial.
\n
The Ark Funds claims to be technology-based, but it seems that the Funds does not fully trust China's technology. By analyzing its holdings on Chinese stocks, the most positions held by the Ark Funds now are stocks of e-commerce which owns vast purchasing power, rather than those of technology companies. Cathie Wood, an American investor as well as the CEO & CIO of Ark Invest, once praised Baidu's driverless technology on TV, while their position in Baidu’s stock is not so large. Then, here comes the new energy vehicles of China. The investment target of the Ark Funds is not the Chinese EV trio including Li Auto, NIO Inc. and XPeng Inc., but NIU Technologies. The electric vehicles produced by Niu Technologies are good sellers in New York, while another three makers have not yet expanded into the United States. Once again, it reflects Cathie Wood's skeptical attitude towards China's \"technology\".
\n
Let’s look into the lightening of the Ark Funds
\n
10 stocks are chosen to analyze their share changes. 5 stocks with the largest positions on July 1 (JD, TCEHY, BEKE, PDD, and BIDU) are shown in Figure 1, totaling $1.5 billion, accounting for about 80%. Another 5 stocks are BABA, NIU, HUYA, BYDDY, and BZ, totaling $300 million, accounting for about 20% (Figure 2). Key dates are marked below.
\n
Figure 1
\n
Figure 2
\n
The Ark Funds cleared all its positions in HUYA on July 13 and 14 (marked in the Figure above). The news of the failed merger between Huya and DouYu was announced on July 12, but the Ark Funds did not substantially lighten up its position on the day, and continued the pace in the past few days.
\n
Another marked date is July 26 (Figure 1). The Chinese education stocks plummeted over 50% on Friday, July 23. More importantly, their futures look bright.","content":"
Key Points
\n
\n
Growth stocks may be riskier than stable and established companies, but carefully selected ones may be worth it.
\n
Stay-at-home trends have helped these companies, but their growth rates were high before the pandemic, too.
\n
Both of these fast-growing tech businesses are already profitable.
\n
\n
There's an interesting dilemma when it comes to picking stocks investors can likely hold for years or even decades. On the one hand, investors looking to hold shares for the long haul can stick with stable and established companies that have been around for decades and will likely continue succeeding for the foreseeable future -- companies like Waste Management and Berkshire Hathaway. The downside to this approach, however, is that investors may miss out on the potential outperformance that could come from fast-growing companies over the long haul.
\n
The issue with buying growth stocks, however, is that it's extremely difficult to gauge how long their rapid top-line growth rates can persist. Further, these companies' stock prices could perform very poorly if the growth prospects already baked into the stock price don't pan out. In other words, there's arguably more risk when it comes to betting on growth stocks for the next decade than there is for stable and established companies with decades of success behind them.
\n
So if an investor wants to buy growth stocks with a high chance of exceeding expectations over the next 10 years, they better have some pretty good reasons to believe these companies can do exactly that.
\n
\n
Here are two growth stocks that have a shot at not only living up to high expectations over the next 10 years but possibly even exceeding them:Zoom Video Communications(NASDAQ:ZM) and Peloton Interactive(NASDAQ:PTON).
\n
Zoom and Peloton were already thriving before the pandemic
\n
At first glance, investors may conclude that Zoom is nothing more than a pandemic stock. They may argue that the company's success was predicated almost entirely on the fact that much of the world was in lockdown in 2020 and going into 2021.
\n
It's true that Zoom benefited significantly from the rise of virtual work in 2020. After all, revenue for the company's fiscal 2021 (a fiscal year ending Jan. 31, 2021) skyrocketed 326% year over year. But investors should note that the trend of using video to collaborate virtually was already extremely strong before the pandemic; fiscal 2020 revenue rose 88% year over year. Growth at the time was particularly strong from large customers. Zoom's customers contributing more than $100,000 of trailing-12-month revenue increased 86% year over year in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2020.
\n
The same goes for Peloton. On the one hand, investors looking to hold shares for the long haul can stick with stable and established companies that have been around for decades and will likely continue succeeding for the foreseeable future -- companies like Waste Management and Berkshire Hathaway. The downside to this approach, however, is that investors may miss out on the potential outperformance that could come from fast-growing companies over the long haul.\nThe issue with buying growth stocks, however, is that it's extremely difficult to gauge how long their rapid top-line growth rates can persist. Further, these companies' stock prices could perform very poorly if the growth prospects already baked into the stock price don't pan out. In other words, there's arguably more risk when it comes to betting on growth stocks for the next decade than there is for stable and established companies with decades of success behind them.\nSo if an investor wants to buy growth stocks with a high chance of exceeding expectations over the next 10 years, they better have some pretty good reasons to believe these companies can do exactly that.\nIMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.\nHere are two growth stocks that have a shot at not only living up to high expectations over the next 10 years but possibly even exceeding them:Zoom Video Communications(NASDAQ:ZM) and Peloton Interactive(NASDAQ:PTON).\nZoom and Peloton were already thriving before the pandemic\nAt first glance, investors may conclude that Zoom is nothing more than a pandemic stock. They may argue that the company's success was predicated almost entirely on the fact that much of the world was in lockdown in 2020 and going into 2021.\nIt's true that Zoom benefited significantly from the rise of virtual work in 2020. After all, revenue for the company's fiscal 2021 (a fiscal year ending Jan. 31, 2021) skyrocketed 326% year over year. But investors should note that the trend of using video to collaborate virtually was already extremely strong before the pandemic; fiscal 2020 revenue rose 88% year over year. Growth at the time was particularly strong from large customers. Zoom's customers contributing more than $100,000 of trailing-12-month revenue increased 86% year over year in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2020.\nThe same goes for Peloton. The company certainly benefited from the pandemic, but revenue during the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2019 was growing at a year-over-year rate of 77%, with connected fitness subscribers increasing 96% year over year.\nContinued momentum\nThe underlying catalysts driving Zoom and Peloton are both still alive and well. Strong growth persists at both companies.\nDespite facing extremely tough comparisons in the year-ago quarter, from when both companies were benefiting from soaring demand amid lockdowns, Zoom's and Peloton's revenue in their most recently reported quarters grew 191% and 141% year over year, respectively.\nLooking ahead, Zoom notably guided for fiscal 2022 revenue of nearly $4 billion, up from fiscal 2021 revenue of about $2.7 billion.\nBoding well for Peloton's continued momentum, management said in its most recent quarterly update that its monthly average workouts per connected fitness subscription rose to an all-time high, showing how the company's products are still yielding high engagement even as the economy reopens.\nHealthy profits\nFinally, another factor that makes these companies unique from many other growth stocks is that they are already very profitable. Zoom generated $873 million of net income on $3.3 billion of trailing-12-month sales, and Peloton served up $213 million of net income from $3.7 billion in revenue.\nSubstantial profits give these companies an edge when it comes to reinvesting in growth opportunities ahead of them and spending on efforts to enhance their competitive positioning and first-mover advantages in their respective industries.\nWhile there's no guarantee these two stocks will beat the market over the next 10 years, their recent momentum -- before, during, and after the worst part of the pandemic -- suggests they likely have a promising future.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"PTON":0.9,"ZM":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":661,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3580090660642631","authorId":"3580090660642631","name":"JJames","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eff7769cacb93c6579fd52e64856b684","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3580090660642631","idStr":"3580090660642631"},"content":"help reply comment","text":"help reply comment","html":"help reply comment"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
