Kay Hian (UOBKH) has downgraded its call on Singapore Airlines (SIA) from “hold” to “sell” while cautioning that the stock’s “very lofty” valuation may not be sustainable in the long run.In a report released on Monday (Jun 19), analyst Roy Chen said SIA’s valuations are now “very stretched” with the stock trading at 1.58 times price-to-book (PB) ratio for FY2024 estimates, which is pegged at 2.8 standard deviation above SIA’s long historical mean of 1.08 times since 2005.This current PB ratio of 1.58 times has not been seen for the last 10 years, but matches SIA’s historical high in October 2007 prior to the global financial crisis, observed Chen. He also noted that SIA’s share price recently rose 31.6 per cent following the release of its FY2023 results. In Chen’s view, some regional fund flows from the three major Chinese airlines have also contributed to the airline’s recent share price surge.Despite the downgrade to “sell”, UOBKH’s target price for SIA has been raised to S$7.07 from S$5.75 as Chen expects earnings growth from the airline to continue, albeit at a slower pace. The new target price is based on 1.44 times PB ratio for FY2024 estimates, which is pegged at two standard deviation above SIA’s historical mean. Chen added that even though SIA’s profitability could slow in FY2024 due to declining cargo yields, weaker cargo volume and moderated passenger yields, he believes overall core earnings could still be sustained with stronger-than-expected operational data.Chen forecasts SIA’s Q1 2024 net profit to hit the range of S$600 million to S$700 million, compared to the net profit of S$602 million in Q4 2023 and S$370 million in the corresponding period last year.Although a potentially weaker macroeconomic environment may dampen air travel and cargo demand, Chen believes the group’s near-term bottomline would continue to be supported by a slower-than-expected catch up by SIA’s regional competitors, as well as lower jet fuel prices. Other factors that may have contributed to SIA’s earnings include SIA’s branding, strong management track record and operational excellence, said Chen. UOBKH also feels that Singapore’s handling of the pandemic has led to greater recognition by the global community and an influx of wealth from the region into Singapore, which ultimately benefits SIA.The analyst is raising his forecasts of SIA’s net profit by 10 per cent to S$2.87 billion in FY2024; 31 per cent to S$1.24 billion in FY2025; and 10 per cent to S$1.04 billion for FY2026. His FY2024 estimate has also taken into account the one-off accounting gain of S$1.11 billion from the Air India-Vistara merger. Shares of SIA were 1.4 per cent or S$0.11 lower at S$7.66 as at the midday trading break.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"C6L.SI":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1501,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":189306646671608,"gmtCreate":1687243168740,"gmtModify":1687243172381,"author":{"id":"3575535478532281","authorId":"3575535478532281","name":"MoneyLaiLai","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/639a3b03c57fa8d7cf603a5133568706","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3575535478532281","idStr":"3575535478532281"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"🙄thank for the comment kpo","listText":"🙄thank for the comment kpo","text":"🙄thank for the comment kpo","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/189306646671608","repostId":"1144367990","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"1144367990","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1687226504,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1144367990?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-06-20 10:01","market":"sg","language":"en","title":"Singapore Airlines Shares Slipped 1.8% As UOB Downgrades It to \"Sell\" on Its Stretched Valuation","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1144367990","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Singapore Airlines shares slipped 1.8% as UOB downgrades it to \"sell\" on its stretched valuation.UOB","content":"

Singapore Airlines shares slipped 1.8% as UOB downgrades it to "sell" on its stretched valuation.

UOB Kay Hian analyst Roy Chen has downgraded Singapore Airlines (SIA) to “sell” with a higher target price of $7.07 from $5.75 previously.

The downgrade comes after Chen’s upgrade to “hold” in May after the airline released its results for the FY2023 ended March 31 on May 16.

However, following the share price surge, which gained 31.6% after SIA’s full-year results, Chen notes that SIA’s valuation is “very lofty” with its FY2024 P/B of 1.58x and 2.8 standard deviations (s.d.) above its historical mean. At its current share price levels, SIA’s valuation now matches its historical peak just before the global financial crisis (GFC) and is unlikely to be sustainable in the long run given Chen’s core return on equity (ROE) estimates of 12.1%, 8.5% and 7.0% for the FY2024, FY2025 and FY2026 respectively.

His new target price is “favourably valued” based on an FY2024 P/B of 1.44x, 2 s.d. above SIA’s historical mean.

On the airline’s share price gain, Chen notes that there were two legs. The first took place between May 17 to 22, immediately after SIA’s FY2023 results and driven by the positive surprise of a strong dividend. The second leg of uprun began on June 1, which coincided with the sharp share price decline of the three major Chinese Airlines.

“[The share price decline was] triggered by China Southern Airlines’ (CSA) surprising announcement (on May 31) of raising up to 25.6% of new shares, which has underlined major risks of more earnings per share (EPS)-dilutive equity raisings by the three major Chinese airlines,” says Chen.

“Noting the coincidence of timing, we reckon that some regional funds that previously resided with Chinese airlines may have switched to SIA,” he adds.

Despite the downgrade, the analyst is still positive on SIA’s outstanding performance, making it the best in the region, noting that the airline is fully out of the woods for a year already compared to its close regional peers, which are still struggling with legacy impacts from the pandemic.

“The operation excellence and strong management track record (testified during the pandemic) has allowed SIA to reap a disproportional share of benefits from the regional air travel recovery. In the second quarter, warned the banker, trading volumes at retail brokerages showed as much as a 30% sequential decline in meme stock buying. And of course, it's hard to create a short squeeze without buyers.
\n
Result: Meme stocks took a tumble, with Eastman Kodak(NYSE:KODK)closing Thursday down 8.5% from Friday's close,BlackBerry Limited(NYSE:BB)losing 10.4%, and GameStop(NYSE:GME)crashing to a 12.8% loss.
\n
So what
\n
Only in one instance was there actual news to explain the declines. In fact, more than half of GameStop's losses for the week came on just one trading day -- Wednesday -- when Bloomberg reported that Netflix is eying an entryinto the video game space, in which it will de facto compete with GameStop.
\n
As for the other companies, though -- and as for meme stocks in general--it's primarily a shift in sentiment against the companies that's weighing on their stock prices. Following up on Goldman's negative take, Franklin Resources CEO Jenny Johnson chimed in on Wednesday with a warning that traders \"could lose everything\" if they persist in buying meme stocks.
\n
Now what
\n
Attractive as it might be to think you're \"sticking it to the man\" on Wall Street by buying stocks that \"hedge funds\" are shorting, the simple truth is that neither BlackBerry nor Kodak has earned any profit whatsoever since 2019 -- and GameStop hasn't earned a profit since 2018.
\n
\"I never like investing where there isn't fundamentals behind it,\" Johnson told Yahoo! In the second quarter, warned the banker, trading volumes at retail brokerages showed as much as a 30% sequential decline in meme stock buying. And of course, it's hard to create a short squeeze without buyers.\nResult: Meme stocks took a tumble, with Eastman Kodak(NYSE:KODK)closing Thursday down 8.5% from Friday's close,BlackBerry Limited(NYSE:BB)losing 10.4%, and GameStop(NYSE:GME)crashing to a 12.8% loss.\nSo what\nOnly in one instance was there actual news to explain the declines. In fact, more than half of GameStop's losses for the week came on just one trading day -- Wednesday -- when Bloomberg reported that Netflix is eying an entryinto the video game space, in which it will de facto compete with GameStop.\nAs for the other companies, though -- and as for meme stocks in general--it's primarily a shift in sentiment against the companies that's weighing on their stock prices. Following up on Goldman's negative take, Franklin Resources CEO Jenny Johnson chimed in on Wednesday with a warning that traders \"could lose everything\" if they persist in buying meme stocks.\nNow what\nAttractive as it might be to think you're \"sticking it to the man\" on Wall Street by buying stocks that \"hedge funds\" are shorting, the simple truth is that neither BlackBerry nor Kodak has earned any profit whatsoever since 2019 -- and GameStop hasn't earned a profit since 2018.\n\"I never like investing where there isn't fundamentals behind it,\" Johnson told Yahoo! Finance Wednesday. While it's certainly true that a lucky few traders could make -- indeed, have made -- money trying to time the market on meme stocks, there's no underlying value to the companies behind the stock tickers -- no profits. That means, the moment sentiment turns against them, there's literally nothing left to prop up the stock price.\nJohnson just thinks that's a bad way to invest, andI cannot disagree.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"GME":0.9,"KODK":0.9,"BB":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1913,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":158220763,"gmtCreate":1625151835152,"gmtModify":1703737313044,"author":{"id":"3575535478532281","authorId":"3575535478532281","name":"MoneyLaiLai","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/639a3b03c57fa8d7cf603a5133568706","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3575535478532281","idStr":"3575535478532281"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hold till they feel the pain and bleed, ???","listText":"Hold till they feel the pain and bleed, ???","text":"Hold till they feel the pain and bleed, ???","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/158220763","repostId":"1194368990","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1843,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":150193367,"gmtCreate":1624888963559,"gmtModify":1703847153014,"author":{"id":"3575535478532281","authorId":"3575535478532281","name":"MoneyLaiLai","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/639a3b03c57fa8d7cf603a5133568706","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3575535478532281","idStr":"3575535478532281"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Apes don need you to do stock coverage forgme, apes know what they are doing. In addition to their extremely online popularity, both companies have spent the first half of 2021 leveraging their meme status to get out from major debt loads with significant new equity offerings.
\n
But HypeEquity's data indicated that GameStop's day might see a turnaround.
\n
Comments about buying GameStop outpaced those about selling, and while AMC's social-media action evinced an opposite trend, more than 20% of comments referred to both AMC and GameStop. Perhaps most tellingly, HypeEquity's data showed that roughly 8% of comments on both stocks included the word \"squeeze.\"
\n
\"When looking at the comments themselves,\" said HypeEquity founder Travis Rehl. \"There's a clear desire for a short squeeze either today or very soon.\"
\n
Reports of short sellers in GameStop, or those betting for declines in the company's shares, were circulating widely on Monday, and Tuesday's early price action combined to create one clear narrative; fighting hedge funds that users believe are renewing their campaign to short the meme stock. So-called meme stocks are ones that tend to be influenced by hype on social media rather than just company fundamentals.
\n
\"Remember, their portfolio full of derivatives is nothing against the power of HODLING the stock,\" proclaimed Mexicanred1 on r/Superstonk. \"There's only one way this can go... Just up.\"
\n
Just after 11 a.m. EST, shares in GameStop appeared to respond to that sentiment, popping more than 4% in less than 10 minutes and going briefly positive on the day. Shares of AMC surged almost 3% in the same period.
\n
At last check, GameStop shares are down 1.1% but had been up nearly 12% so far this week. In addition to their extremely online popularity, both companies have spent the first half of 2021 leveraging their meme status to get out from major debt loads with significant new equity offerings.\nBut HypeEquity's data indicated that GameStop's day might see a turnaround.\nComments about buying GameStop outpaced those about selling, and while AMC's social-media action evinced an opposite trend, more than 20% of comments referred to both AMC and GameStop. Perhaps most tellingly, HypeEquity's data showed that roughly 8% of comments on both stocks included the word \"squeeze.\"\n\"When looking at the comments themselves,\" said HypeEquity founder Travis Rehl. \"There's a clear desire for a short squeeze either today or very soon.\"\nReports of short sellers in GameStop, or those betting for declines in the company's shares, were circulating widely on Monday, and Tuesday's early price action combined to create one clear narrative; fighting hedge funds that users believe are renewing their campaign to short the meme stock. So-called meme stocks are ones that tend to be influenced by hype on social media rather than just company fundamentals.\n\"Remember, their portfolio full of derivatives is nothing against the power of HODLING the stock,\" proclaimed Mexicanred1 on r/Superstonk. \"There's only one way this can go... Just up.\"\nJust after 11 a.m. EST, shares in GameStop appeared to respond to that sentiment, popping more than 4% in less than 10 minutes and going briefly positive on the day. Shares of AMC surged almost 3% in the same period.\nAt last check, GameStop shares are down 1.1% but had been up nearly 12% so far this week. In the year to date, GameStop's stock is up nearly 850%, FactSet data show.\nSince GameStop's rise in late January, retail investors have remained bullish on the stock and were re-energized when Keith Gill, the trader on Reddit known as DeepF--ingValue, disclosed that he had doubled down on it.\nMeanwhile, AMC shares are climbing 0.6% on the day and have gained more than 8% since the start of the week. His new target price is “favourably valued” based on an FY2024 P/B of 1.44x, 2 s.d. above SIA’s historical mean.On the airline’s share price gain, Chen notes that there were two legs. The first took place between May 17 to 22, immediately after SIA’s FY2023 results and driven by the positive surprise of a strong dividend. The second leg of uprun began on June 1, which coincided with the sharp share price decline of the three major Chinese Airlines.“[The share price decline was] triggered by China Southern Airlines’ (CSA) surprising announcement (on May 31) of raising up to 25.6% of new shares, which has underlined major risks of more earnings per share (EPS)-dilutive equity raisings by the three major Chinese airlines,” says Chen.“Noting the coincidence of timing, we reckon that some regional funds that previously resided with Chinese airlines may have switched to SIA,” he adds.Despite the downgrade, the analyst is still positive on SIA’s outstanding performance, making it the best in the region, noting that the airline is fully out of the woods for a year already compared to its close regional peers, which are still struggling with legacy impacts from the pandemic.“The operation excellence and strong management track record (testified during the pandemic) has allowed SIA to reap a disproportional share of benefits from the regional air travel recovery. SIA has also recently demonstrated its product leadership, offering unlimited Wifi to KrisFlyer members,” says Chen.SIA’s success is also thanks to the Singapore government, which provided the airline with “timely and adequate support during the pandemic”.“Beyond that, the pragmatism, professionalism, efficiency and candidacy demonstrated by the Singapore government in the pandemic have earned Singapore due recognition from the global community, leading to the huge wealth influx (recent news about inflows of ultra-high net worth) to Singapore from regional countries (e.g. China). We believe this benefits SIA, which is well-positioned to capture the demand of the growing mid-to-high-end customer group with its premium branding image,” he adds.In FY2024, Chen is expecting SIA’s earnings to moderate on a y-o-y basis driven by moderating passenger yields, lower cargo yields and weak cargo volume. However, given the airline’s strong passenger operation data in May and noting the slower-than-expected catch-up by some of its regional competitors, the analyst now expect SIA’s pax load factor and pax yields to stay upbeat for longer. In the 1QFY2024, Chen is expecting the sharp decline in jet fuel prices (of 19% q-o-q) to provide support to SIA’s core earnings, despite the moderation of passenger and cargo yields.“Although the benefits of fuel cost savings are likely to be passed down to end-customers in the long run driven by airlines’ competitions, airlines should be able to largely retain the benefits of fuel cost savings in the short-term horizon since their near-term airfare revenue would have been somewhat secured by forward-booking of air tickets,” says Chen. The analyst is forecasting SIA’s 1QFY2024 net profit to come in at around $600 million to $700 million, compared with its 4QFY2023 net profit of $602 million and 1QFY2023 net profit of $370 million. In line with his expectations of upbeat passenger load factors and yields staying upbeat for longer, Chen has upped his net profit forecasts for the FY2024, FY2025 and FY2026 by 10%, 31% and 10% to $2.87 billion, $1.24 billion and $1.04 billion respectively.“Our FY2024 net profit forecast includes a one-off accounting gain of $1.11 billion from the planned Air India-Vistara merger, excluding which SIA’s FY2024 earnings would have been $1.76 billion,” he says.As at 11.20am, shares in SIA are trading 5 cents lower or 0.64% down at $7.72.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"C6L.SI":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1838,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":189071438,"gmtCreate":1623236604524,"gmtModify":1704198970075,"author":{"id":"3575535478532281","authorId":"3575535478532281","name":"MoneyLaiLai","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/639a3b03c57fa8d7cf603a5133568706","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575535478532281","authorIdStr":"3575535478532281"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"You get so easily distracted??
