The stock went public in mid-2010, and has since surged over 18,000%. Valued at a market cap of $762 billion, Tesla is also the most valuable EV manufacturer globally. While Tesla has surged 90.9% in 2023, it trades 42% below all-time highs - and some analysts predict more downside ahead. Let’s see if investing in the EV stock right now is a good idea. Tesla Battles A Challenging Macro EnvironmentIn recent months, Tesla has been wrestling with a sluggish macro environment - including rising interest rates, elevated inflation, and supply chain disruptions, all of which have driven consumer demand lower. In Q3 of 2023, it reported sales of $23.35 billion and adjusted earnings of $0.66 per share. Analysts forecast Tesla’s revenue at $24.1 billion, while earnings estimates stood at $0.73 per share. Tesla failed to beat Wall Street's revenue and earnings estimates for the first time since 2019. While Tesla increased sales by 9% year over year, its earnings narrowed by 44% in Q3. Its product costs at new factories were higher than those at legacy manufacturing facilities, resulting in gross profits falling by 22% compared to the year-ago period. Moreover, it spent $1.16 billion in research and development (R&D ), an increase of almost 60% year over year as Tesla doubled the size of training compute for its artificial intelligence (AI) model. These costs meant Tesla ended the September quarter with an operating margin of 7.6%, down from a margin of 17.2% in the prior-year period. While gross margins fell 18%, operating expenses rose by more than 40% year over year in Q3 of 2023. A combination of rising costs, heavy investments in R&D, and other growth projects resulted in a decline of 74% in Tesla’s free cash flow, which stood at $848 million. What Will Drive Tesla’s Stock Price?Tesla enjoyed a first-mover advantage for several years, allowing it to lead EV production globally. But in the last few years, a slew of established automobile manufacturers such as Ford (F), General Motors (GM), Toyota (TM), and Volkswagen (VWAGY), along with new entrants including Nio (NIO), Lucid Motors (LCID), and Rivian (RIVN), have all entered this rapidly expanding market. Despite an increase in competition, Tesla accounts for roughly 50% of the EV market in the U.S. and almost a fifth of global shipments. That said, the EV heavyweight has cut its vehicle prices in the last few quarters to accommodate a challenging economy. Historically, Tesla stock was valued at a premium due to its robust growth in shipments and industry-leading profit margins. But as the bottom line has narrowed in the last two years, it's possible that Tesla’s valuation will be far more conservative going forward. Tesla expects its Cybertruck to be the next key driver of revenue growth for the company in the upcoming decade. Moreover, deliveries of the Cybertruck were forecast to start by the end of this year, but are now projected to be a drain on Tesla’s cash flows in the near term. Regarding the Tesla Cybertruck, CEO Elon Musk emphasized, “It is going to require immense work to reach volume production and be cashflow positive at a price that people can afford.”What Is The Target Price For Tesla Stock?Analysts tracking Tesla stock expect sales to rise from $81.5 billion in 2022 to $109 billion in 2024. But adjusted earnings are forecast to narrow from $4.07 to $3.56 in this period. Priced at seven times forward sales and 67x forward earnings, TSLA stock trades at a premium. Out of the 26 analysts tracking TSLA, seven recommend “strong buy,” two recommend “moderate buy,” 14 recommend “hold,” and three recommend “strong sell.” The average target price for TSLA stock is $237.68, which is marginally higher than the current trading price. However, Roth MKM has a Street-low target price of $85, indicating a potential downside of 64% for Tesla stock. In a post-earnings note, analyst Craig Irwin reiterated that price target alongside a “hold” rating, and argued that TSLA's premium valuation appears to rest on the “specious assumption” that none of its competitors' EV models will gain traction over the next year.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSLA":1,"TSLL":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3059,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":247381371121664,"gmtCreate":1701433928592,"gmtModify":1701433932820,"author":{"id":"3575205207637336","authorId":"3575205207637336","name":"weijie123","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f79451a0e5ae21cfbd9c59c760eed0a7","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3575205207637336","idStr":"3575205207637336"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Stop The stock went public in mid-2010, and has since surged over 18,000%. In a post-earnings note, analyst Craig Irwin reiterated that price target alongside a “hold” rating, and argued that TSLA's premium valuation appears to rest on the “specious assumption” that none of its competitors' EV models will gain traction over the next year.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"TSLA":1,"TSLL":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3059,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":319851145121968,"gmtCreate":1719117468762,"gmtModify":1719117473295,"author":{"id":"3575205207637336","authorId":"3575205207637336","name":"weijie123","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f79451a0e5ae21cfbd9c59c760eed0a7","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575205207637336","authorIdStr":"3575205207637336"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Apple(AAPL)$ ","listText":"$Apple(AAPL)$ ","text":"$Apple(AAPL)$","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/13054c185bc12dd92af33d783b311b54","width":"981","height":"1637"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/319851145121968","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2681,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":234313639465032,"gmtCreate":1698246692462,"gmtModify":1698246696658,"author":{"id":"3575205207637336","authorId":"3575205207637336","name":"weijie123","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f79451a0e5ae21cfbd9c59c760eed0a7","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575205207637336","authorIdStr":"3575205207637336"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Let the bull market run","listText":"Let the bull market run","text":"Let the bull market run","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/234313639465032","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3265,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":100043981,"gmtCreate":1619570968943,"gmtModify":1704726080471,"author":{"id":"3575205207637336","authorId":"3575205207637336","name":"weijie123","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f79451a0e5ae21cfbd9c59c760eed0a7","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575205207637336","authorIdStr":"3575205207637336"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Help like and comment pls. On Tuesday, a Bank of America Securities analyst pointed out that the next-generation data analytics company stands to benefit mightily from increasing worries about user-privacy rights from an emerging technology. This argument very much landed with investors, who promptly bid the company stock up by nearly 9% on the day.So whatIn a new research note, BofA prognosticator Mariana Pérez Mora wrote about the growing controversy over how websites and other entities use facial recognition technology (FRT) data. As with other types of data, many are concerned with potential bad actors misusing their digital likenesses for nefarious ends. That concern is only going to grow as FRT becomes more accessible and, therefore, commonplace.\"We see the government's focus on managing FRT data usage as one area of opportunity for Palantir,\" Pérez Mora wrote in her latest Palantir analysis. \"The company's Foundry software enables granular access controls, oversight of data usage, and secure cross-agency collaboration.\"The analyst is cheered by Palantir's public commitment to safeguarding the privacy rights of users. She pointed out that the company expressly pledged to do so in writing in its 2021 10-K annual report filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Now whatIn making this argument, Pérez Mora is reiterating her rather bullish stance on Palantir Technologies. She's maintaining her unambiguous buy recommendation on the specialty tech company, and her $13 per share price target. It is something we have to do," Mr. Powell said in an interview Tuesday during The Wall Street Journal's Future of Everything Festival. "There could be some pain involved."

Mr. Powell said he hoped that the Fed could bring down inflation while preserving a strong labor market, which he said might lead the unemployment rate -- near half-century lows of 3.6% in April -- to rise slightly. "It may not be a perfect labor market," he said.

The central bank is raising interest rates as part of its most aggressive effort in decades to curb upward price pressures. Mr. Powell signaled Tuesday that the central bank was likely to follow a half-percentage-point raise earlier this month, to a range between 0.75% and 1%, with similar moves at meetings in June and July. Until this month, the Fed hadn't raised rates in such intervals since 2000.

The Fed last year maintained aggressive stimulus to spur a faster labor market recovery. Mr. Powell said Tuesday that it was possible that disruptions from the pandemic had changed the labor market in ways that made current levels of unemployment inconsistent with the Fed's 2% inflation goal.

He said that it seemed the unemployment rate consistent with stable inflation "is probably well above 3.6%."

The Fed chairman repeated his hope that the central bank can curtail high inflation without spurring a large rise in unemployment. However, Mr. Powell said, there is little from modern economic experience to suggest that outcome can be achieved. "If you look in the history book and find it -- no, you can't," he said. "I think we are in a world of firsts."

Wells Fargo & Co. Chief Executive Charlie Scharf, speaking at the same event Tuesday morning, said it would be difficult to avoid a recession but noted that consumers and businesses remain financially solid.

"The fact that everyone is so strong going into this should hopefully provide a cushion such that whatever recession there is, if there is one, is short and not all that deep," he said.

Mr. Powell said he wasn't at odds with those who believe the Fed faces a difficult path to achieving what is known as a "soft landing," in which growth slows enough to bring down inflation without triggering a recession.

"I would say there is no disagreement really. It is a challenging task, made more challenging the last couple months because of global events," he said. "It is challenging because unemployment is very low already and because inflation is very high."

Fed officials described higher inflation a year ago as temporary. They backed away from that characterization last fall, as the labor market healed rapidly and price pressures broadened.

Still, the Fed as recently as January had expected inflation to diminish this spring as supply-chain bottlenecks improved. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in late February and rolling Covid-related lockdowns in China created new sources of inflationary pressures.

"That is going to make it harder for inflation to come down, so it has added a degree of difficulty to what was already a challenging market," said Mr. Powell.

The Fed's stopping point for rate increases isn't certainty. If inflation doesn't show signs of diminishing soon, more officials could conclude that rates need to rise closer to 4% over the next 12 to 18 months, rather than to a level around 3% that most of them projected at their policy meeting two months ago.

"We will go until we feel like we are at a place where we can say, 'Yes, financial conditions are at an appropriate place.
