It didn't hurt that President Biden's election is likely to lead to some policy gains for wind, solar, and energy storage over the next four years.
\n
If you're still on the fence about renewable energy versus other energy stocks, there are three reasons renewables are the future.
\n
\n
Growth is with renewable energy
\n
Oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy may still be bigger energy sources from an absolute consumption basis than any source of renewable energy -- but they're not where the growth is. You can see below that wind and solar energy are by far the fastest-growing sources of energy in the U.S. since 2000, and the same trends hold worldwide.
\n
U.S. SOLAR ENERGY PRODUCTION DATA BY YCHARTS
\n
Despite all of this growth, wind energy only accounts for about 8.4% of all electricity consumed in the U.S. and solar energy is 3% of the electricity supply, so there's a lot of growth potential ahead. And there's one big reason wind, solar, and other renewable energy assets will keep growing.
\n
Renewables are cheaper than fossil fuels
\n
Maybe the biggest reason to believe in renewable energy is the trajectory in which costs are heading. As it becomes more expensive to build nuclear power plants, oil becomes more difficult to find, and coal becomes less competitive by the day, renewable energy costs are plummeting.
\n
Below is the unsubsidized cost of wind, utility-scale solar, natural gas, nuclear, and coal power plants according to Lazard'sLevelized Cost of Energy Analysis, which it publishes every year. You can see that between 2010 and 2020, the cost of wind and solar have plummeted and the only fossil fuel that's gone down in cost is natural gas.
\n
DATA SOURCE: LAZARD LEVELIZED COST OF ENERGY ANALYSIS VERSIONS 4.0 AND 14.0.
\n
What's more impressive is that the cost of wind and solar energy now beats fossil fuels in most locations. This is no longer an industry that's driven by subsidies or environmentalists -- it's cost-effective and winning cost-competitive bids long-term. The next step it needs to really take over the energy industry is making energy storage a viable business.
\n
Innovation leads the way
\n
What gives me the most confidence about renewable energy long-term is the fact that innovation continues to drive the industry. Innovation helps lower cost, build better business models, and drive new technologies. Here are a few innovations I'm excited about on the horizon.
\n
\n
Solar plus storage:Battery storage is becoming increasingly viable for homeowners, commercial buildings, and utilities.SunPower (NASDAQ:SPWR) and Sunrun (NASDAQ:RUN) are growing their energy storage businesses for homes by enabling lower utility bills along with backup power. And long-term they may play a role in making homes and EV charging smarter.
\n
Hydrogen fuel cells:The big opportunity for renewable energy is when long-term energy storage is viable. This would enable cheap solar power plants to manufacture hydrogen via electrolysis to transport energy, which would fundamentally change how we use electricity.Bloom Energy (NYSE:BE) is a leader in this space, building large fuel cells to turn hydrogen into electricity, but it's also launching an electrolyzer to turn cheap renewable electricity combined with water into hydrogen fuel. As this technology becomes more cost-effective, it could replace fossil fuels altogether.
\n
Electric vehicles:Not only are electric vehicles helping replace fossil fuel vehicles, they could eventually be a great energy storage location in the home. Imagine using your charged car to power your home during an electricity outage or store electricity from your rooftop solar for use at night.
\n
Smart homes:Another area of innovation today is making our demand sources smarter. Homes can heat and cool at more efficient times, use less energy during peak hours, and pull supply when wind and solar production are high. Companies like SunPower and Sunrun are building the tools to make homes smarter and use renewable energy more efficiently, and that will likely continue over the next decade.
\n
\n
As with any innovation or new product, we don't know what's going to win and different companies are taking different strategies to market, so there are still lots of risks for investors. But one way or another, I think innovation will drive the renewable energy industry forward.
\n
How to invest in renewable energy stocks
\n
If you're diving into renewable energy, I've mentioned three stocks that should do well as the companies grow. It didn't hurt that President Biden's election is likely to lead to some policy gains for wind, solar, and energy storage over the next four years.\nIf you're still on the fence about renewable energy versus other energy stocks, there are three reasons renewables are the future.\nIMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.\nGrowth is with renewable energy\nOil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy may still be bigger energy sources from an absolute consumption basis than any source of renewable energy -- but they're not where the growth is. You can see below that wind and solar energy are by far the fastest-growing sources of energy in the U.S. since 2000, and the same trends hold worldwide.\nU.S. SOLAR ENERGY PRODUCTION DATA BY YCHARTS\nDespite all of this growth, wind energy only accounts for about 8.4% of all electricity consumed in the U.S. and solar energy is 3% of the electricity supply, so there's a lot of growth potential ahead. And there's one big reason wind, solar, and other renewable energy assets will keep growing.\nRenewables are cheaper than fossil fuels\nMaybe the biggest reason to believe in renewable energy is the trajectory in which costs are heading. As it becomes more expensive to build nuclear power plants, oil becomes more difficult to find, and coal becomes less competitive by the day, renewable energy costs are plummeting.\nBelow is the unsubsidized cost of wind, utility-scale solar, natural gas, nuclear, and coal power plants according to Lazard'sLevelized Cost of Energy Analysis, which it publishes every year. You can see that between 2010 and 2020, the cost of wind and solar have plummeted and the only fossil fuel that's gone down in cost is natural gas.\nDATA SOURCE: LAZARD LEVELIZED COST OF ENERGY ANALYSIS VERSIONS 4.0 AND 14.0.\nWhat's more impressive is that the cost of wind and solar energy now beats fossil fuels in most locations. This is no longer an industry that's driven by subsidies or environmentalists -- it's cost-effective and winning cost-competitive bids long-term. The next step it needs to really take over the energy industry is making energy storage a viable business.\nInnovation leads the way\nWhat gives me the most confidence about renewable energy long-term is the fact that innovation continues to drive the industry. Innovation helps lower cost, build better business models, and drive new technologies. Here are a few innovations I'm excited about on the horizon.\n\nSolar plus storage:Battery storage is becoming increasingly viable for homeowners, commercial buildings, and utilities.SunPower (NASDAQ:SPWR) and Sunrun (NASDAQ:RUN) are growing their energy storage businesses for homes by enabling lower utility bills along with backup power. And long-term they may play a role in making homes and EV charging smarter.\nHydrogen fuel cells:The big opportunity for renewable energy is when long-term energy storage is viable. As this technology becomes more cost-effective, it could replace fossil fuels altogether.\nElectric vehicles:Not only are electric vehicles helping replace fossil fuel vehicles, they could eventually be a great energy storage location in the home. Imagine using your charged car to power your home during an electricity outage or store electricity from your rooftop solar for use at night.\nSmart homes:Another area of innovation today is making our demand sources smarter. Homes can heat and cool at more efficient times, use less energy during peak hours, and pull supply when wind and solar production are high. Companies like SunPower and Sunrun are building the tools to make homes smarter and use renewable energy more efficiently, and that will likely continue over the next decade.\n\nAs with any innovation or new product, we don't know what's going to win and different companies are taking different strategies to market, so there are still lots of risks for investors. But one way or another, I think innovation will drive the renewable energy industry forward.\nHow to invest in renewable energy stocks\nIf you're diving into renewable energy, I've mentioned three stocks that should do well as the companies grow. I like SunPower in residential and commercial solar and storage and Bloom Energy in hydrogen fuel cells.\nIf you're more risk-averse and are looking for dividends,Brookfield Renewable Partners (NYSE:BEP) and Hannon Armstrong Sustainable Infrastructure (NYSE:HASI) are spending billions to build and buy renewable energy and energy storage projects around the world. They'll generate cash flow from these projects, which drive dividends that yield 3.2% and 3% respectively. No matter where you invest, renewable energy clearly has the tailwinds in the energy industry.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"HSC":0.9,"BE":0.9,"SPWR":0.9,"BEP":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9,".DJI":0.9,"RUN":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1022,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3579653595425309","authorId":"3579653595425309","name":"azotest","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9bd8f412814fbaeb758280a91014dd5a","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"authorIdStr":"3579653595425309","idStr":"3579653595425309"},"content":"Please reply","text":"Please reply","html":"Please reply"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":197986410,"gmtCreate":1621419754930,"gmtModify":1704357316921,"author":{"id":"3570530631542520","authorId":"3570530631542520","name":"Jvalour","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dabcad43bda9229fb25d582c8c1ec36b","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3570530631542520","idStr":"3570530631542520"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Pls like and comment! Currently, investors pay the same tax rates on short-term capital gains on investments held for a year or less as they do on most other forms of income, such as wages and salaries or interest. However, if an investor holds onto an investment for longer than a year and then sells it, long-term capital-gains tax treatment applies.

Although the brackets aren't exactly aligned, in general, those who pay 10% or 12% in tax on ordinary income pay 0% on their long-term capital gains. Those paying 22% to 35% typically pay a 15% long-term capital-gains tax, while top-bracket taxpayers whose ordinary income tax rate is 37% have a 20% maximum rate on their investment gains for assets held long term.

Under the proposed new rules, favorable tax treatment for long-term capital gains would remain completely in place for everyone in the first two groups and even for many in the third group. However, for taxpayers with incomes above $1 million, the lower long-term capital-gains tax rates would go away and they'd instead have to pay ordinary income tax rates on those gains, as well.

Why investors shouldn't be surprised

The reported proposal isn't a new one. Biden discussed it during the 2020 presidential campaign as one of the aspects of his broader tax plan. It's likely that the final version of any actual bill introduced in Congress would also include an increase in the top tax bracket to 39.6%, which was the level in effect immediately before tax-reform efforts made major changes to tax laws for the 2018 tax year.

Moreover, the legislation is far from a done deal. Even with Democrats having control of both houses of Congress and the White House, the margins are razor-thin. Already, some Democratic lawmakers have balked at tax-policy proposals, and in the Senate, the loss of even a single vote would be sufficient to prevent a tax bill from becoming law.

Is a stock market crash imminent?

It's understandable that investors would worry that a capital-gains tax hike might cause the stock market to drop. If investors sell their stocks now to lock in current lower rates, it could create short-term selling pressure. In the long run, though, the fundamentals of underlying businesses should still control share-price movements.

Moreover, this wouldn't be the first time capital-gains taxes have risen. In 2012, maximum capital-gains rates rose from 15% to 20%. Yet that didn't stop U.S. stocks from continuing what would eventually become a decade-long bull market.

Tax-law changes require some planning, but investors shouldn't change their entire investing strategy because of taxes. Letting them define how you invest can be a huge mistake and distract you from the task of finding the best companies and owning their shares for the long haul.

Read more:Stocks Will Get Over Their Big Biden Tax Wobble
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Would Tax Hikes Spell Doom for the Stock Market?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWould Tax Hikes Spell Doom for the Stock Market?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-23 15:10 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Investors got spooked by a potential boost to capital-gains rates for high-income taxpayers. The stock market had a turbulent day on Thursday, with initial gains during the first half of the trading ...
\n\nSource Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{".SPX":"S&P 500 Index",".IXIC":"NASDAQ Composite",".DJI":"道琼斯"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/04/22/would-tax-hikes-spell-doom-for-the-stock-market/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1128911279","content_text":"Investors got spooked by a potential boost to capital-gains rates for high-income taxpayers. The stock market had a turbulent day on Thursday, with initial gains during the first half of the trading session giving way to sharper losses in the mid-afternoon.
