History tells us that whether the market is up or down in any given year is essentially a coin toss. In other words, if you're dipping in and out of stocks, you're not investing -- you're gambling. And there's nothing wrong with gambling, but if you're looking to build life-changing wealth, you're better off taking a buy-and-hold approach. A long-term mindset helps you avoid short-term volatility and it gives your investment theses time to play out.Two stocks that could benefit an investor using a buy-and-hold approach are Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Zscaler (NASDAQ:ZS). Each has great potential to make you richer in the long run. Here's what you should know.Image source: Getty Images.1. TeslaCEO Elon Musk has often said manufacturing efficiency would be Tesla's long-term advantage, and the company is making good on that notion. Its theoretical annual production capacity now exceeds 1 million electric vehicles (EVs), and despite headwinds created by chip shortages, Tesla delivered over 936,000 vehicles in 2021, up 87% from the prior year.More importantly, as production capacity has scaled in both the U.S. and China, Tesla's cost per vehicle has fallen, dropping 55% between 2017 and the first quarter of 2021. That efficiency is due in part to Tesla's 2170 battery cell, a technology that Musk has called \"the highest energy density cell in the world, and also the cheapest.\" To that end, Tesla pays an estimated $187 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for its battery packs -- the most expensive part of an EV. That's 24% lower than the industry average and 10% lower than the next-closest competitor.Additionally, through November 2021, Tesla held 13.7% market share in terms of EV sales, easily besting the second-place EV manufacturer BYD, which captured 9% market share. Production of the Tesla Semi (a semi-tractor trailer) is slated to start in 2022, and the trucking industry is ripe for disruption. The company also plans to integrate its new 4680 battery cell into vehicles this year, a technology that should reinforce its current cost advantages. Specifically, management believes the 4680 battery cell will cut the cost per kWh by 56% and boost EV range by 54%.Further down the road, Tesla aims to launch an autonomous ride-hailing service, a market that ARK Invest analysts value at $1.2 trillion by 2030. While Tesla's full self-driving software is still in the works, Musk has hinted that the company would have a fully autonomous $25,000 EV in late 2023 or 2024. But even if Tesla misses that target, the company still appears to have a big head start in the race to build a self-driving car. That's why I plan to hold this stock forever.2. ZscalerZscaler specializes in cybersecurity. Its cloud platform, the Zero Trust Exchange, is spread across 150 data centers, creating a global network that is fast, safe, and reliable. This distributed architecture, known as a secure access service edge (SASE), allows clients to access corporate resources from any device or location, while also eliminating the IT burden of buying and managing on-site hardware. In short, Zscaler is the new corporate network.Specifically, Zscaler Private Access (ZPA) safeguards internally managed resources, like software hosted in a private data center; and Zscaler Internet Access (ZIA) offers the same protection for externally managed resources, such as applications hosted in the public cloud. More recently, the company expanded its offering with Zscaler Digital Experience (ZDX), an infrastructure performance monitoring solution, and Zscaler Cloud Protection (ZCP), a suite of tools that allows clients to secure cloud workloads.Collectively, those products fuel digital transformation, keeping corporate networks secure no matter whether the information is stored on-site or in the cloud, nor whether it's accessed by employees in the office or those working remotely. However, Zscaler could extend its services to smaller businesses (fewer than 2,000 employees), which would push its opportunity above 600 million seats.More broadly, as the best-in-class network security solution, the company should see strong demand in the coming years as more enterprises seek to protect their sensitive data. But there is money to be made if you focus on innovative sellers and maybe even on traditional brick-and-mortar retailers that are cleaning up their acts.</p>\n<p>Below are two lists of stocks of retailers, broadly defined by FactSet to include specialized companies such as Vroom Inc.&nbsp;and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CVNA\">Carvana Co.</a> , which sell (and buy) used cars online. The first list includes 15 stocks that analysts expect to rise the most over the next year, and the second list shows companies expected to increase their sales the most over the next two years.</p>\n<p>Two retailers that didn't make either list are Macy's Inc.&nbsp;and Target Corp.. Both are worth watching, although investors with shorter-term horizons may find them pricey.</p>\n<p>Shares of Macy's had nearly doubled for 2021 through last week. The stock popped 20% on Aug. 19, after the company reported with WHP Global to sell more Toys 'R' Us items in its stores. The stock closed at $22.39 on Aug. 20 -- a penny above the consensus 12-month price target among analysts polled by FactSet. Of course, analysts can change their estimates in light of recent news.</p>\n<p>Target's stock is up 49% this year. The company also reported a much-improved second quarter . Target's shares closed at $253.40 on Aug. 20, 10% below the consensus price target of $277.66.</p>\n<p><b>Analysts' favorite retail stocks</b></p>\n<p>Starting with the Russell 3000 Index , there are 124 stocks of companies in retail industries, according to FactSet's industry group descriptions. But there is money to be made if you focus on innovative sellers and maybe even on traditional brick-and-mortar retailers that are cleaning up their acts.\nBelow are two lists of stocks of retailers, broadly defined by FactSet to include specialized companies such as Vroom Inc. and Carvana Co. , which sell (and buy) used cars online. The first list includes 15 stocks that analysts expect to rise the most over the next year, and the second list shows companies expected to increase their sales the most over the next two years.\nTwo retailers that didn't make either list are Macy's Inc. and Target Corp.. Both are worth watching, although investors with shorter-term horizons may find them pricey.\nShares of Macy's had nearly doubled for 2021 through last week. The stock popped 20% on Aug. 19, after the company reported with WHP Global to sell more Toys 'R' Us items in its stores. The stock closed at $22.39 on Aug. 20 -- a penny above the consensus 12-month price target among analysts polled by FactSet. Of course, analysts can change their estimates in light of recent news.\nTarget's stock is up 49% this year. The company also reported a much-improved second quarter . Target's shares closed at $253.40 on Aug. 20, 10% below the consensus price target of $277.66.\nAnalysts' favorite retail stocks\nStarting with the Russell 3000 Index , there are 124 stocks of companies in retail industries, according to FactSet's industry group descriptions. The ultimate goal is to find the elusive “10 bagger”—a stock&nbsp;that returns 10 times what you paid for it.</p>\n<p>Wall Street analyst notes and client letters from investment pros are replete with compounder references. Many of the next generation of value managers, identified&nbsp;in a&nbsp;<i>Barron’s</i>&nbsp;cover story in May, are seeking such shares, rather than the traditional value fare of cheap stocks.</p>\n<p>Their search has become more challenging, because buyers are paying lofty prices for high-growth stories. Really big winners are scarce. Only about 35 companies in each of a long series of 10-year periods have compounded their stock prices at 20% or more annually, resulting in at least a sixfold increase, according to Durable Capital Partners.</p>\n<p>Many investors are happy to stick with large, well-known compounders, such as&nbsp;Alphabet(ticker: GOOGL),Mastercard(MA),UnitedHealth Group(UNH), and&nbsp;Eli Lilly(LLY).</p>\n<p><i>Barron’s</i>&nbsp;sought to identify smaller candidates. We talked to investment managers and came up with an eclectic list of 10 stocks, most with market values under $10 billion. NA=Not Available. *The annual EPS growth the company can sustain over the next 3-5 years.</p>\n<p>Source: FactSet</p>\n<p>Amedisys(AMED), a provider of home healthcare and hospice services, has a national footprint in a still-fragmented business.</p>\n<p>“There is going to be massive consolidation of the industry” predicts Dan Cole, a manager of the Columbia Small-Cap Growth fund. “Healthcare is moving to the home.”</p>\n<p>Amedisys stock is up more than tenfold in the past decade. But the shares, around $185, are off nearly 30% after the company recently cut 2021 financial guidance, citing Covid-related staffing and cost issues, mostly in acquired hospice operations. The 2021 earnings estimate is now $6.13 a share, down from nearly $7. The stock trades for 30 times projected 2021 profits. Cole says that the company remains capable of generating 10% annual gains in earnings per share.</p>\n<p>Amyris(AMRS) is a leader in synthetic biology. It fans say its opportunity is to supplant, in an eco-friendly way, a range of products now made from petrochemicals, animals, and plants.</p>\n<p>Using genetically re-engineered yeast and sugar cane, Amyris produces such things as squalane, a high-end moisturizer formerly made from shark livers; vanillin, the flavoring for vanilla; and a no-calorie sweetener normally derived from plants. The stock trades around $13.</p>\n<p><i>Barron’s</i>&nbsp;wrote&nbsp;favorably on the company in July. Amyris sees sales reaching $2 billion by 2025, up from an estimated $400 million this year, driven by its consumer brands.</p>\n<p>“The world needs clean chemistry, and Amyris is the point on the spear to create it,” says Randy Baron, a portfolio manager at Pinnacle Associates, which owns Amyris shares. He thinks they could hit $75 by the end of 2022.</p>\n<p>Booz Allen Hamilton Holding(BAH) is an important consultant to the Defense Department and other agencies. The U.S. government accounted for 97% of its revenue in its latest fiscal year. Booz Allen has built robust ties to the government over the years by providing an array of services, like cybersecurity. Its stock trades around $81, for a 1.8% yield.</p>\n<p>“It has built a strong, partnership-like culture and has a long record of steady growth,” says Josh Spencer, manager of the T. Rowe Price New Horizons fund. He sees Booz Allen as capable of generating 9% to 10% annual growth in revenue and yearly gains of 15% to 16% in earnings, in line with its historical performance. The stock is off 20% from its peak of $100, amid concerns about more restrained military spending. Spencer sees the pullback as a buying opportunity, with the stock valued at less than 20 times earnings.</p>\n<p>J.B. Hunt Transport Services(JBHT) is a leader in intermodal freight, which involves the fuel-efficient movement of trucks over rail lines. It has been one of the most successful trucking companies. Its stock has risen 30-fold over the past 20 years, to a recent $173. “It has an incredible franchise,” says Henry Ellenbogen, chief investment officer at Durable Capital Partners and a member of the&nbsp;Barron’s Roundtable.</p>\n<p>J.B. Hunt’s relationship with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad gives it a strong position in intermodal freight, he notes. J.B. Hunt also has a growing business taking over the trucking operations of smaller companies. And it is involved in digital freight brokerage—matching truckers with shipping customers.</p>\n<p>Ellenbogen says the stock is reasonable at 22 times estimated 2022 profits, given a mid-teens annual growth outlook for earnings.</p>\n<p>Marriott Vacations Worldwide(VAC) is one of the top companies in the timeshare industry. It has 700,000 owners, a resilient business model with significant revenue from fees, and more exposure than its peers to luxury properties in places including Hawaii and Orlando, Fla.</p>\n<p>“It has the best customer base, with the highest spending and an impeccable balance sheet,” says David Baron, a manager of the Baron Focused Growth fund. Marriott Vacations, whose shares recently were trading around $145, should reinstate its dividend later this year, he adds.</p>\n<p>The shares, Baron argues, are cheap at a 11% free-cash-flow yield, based on 2022 estimates. He says that the stock, little changed since 2018, could produce 20% annual returns for shareholders in the coming years.</p>\n<p>SiteOne Landscape Supply(SITE) is the country’s top supplier of landscaping products, with ample opportunity to expand, given that it has just a 13% market share in a highly fragmented industry.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>“It’s growing organically and has lots of acquisition opportunities,” says Columbia’s Cole, who considers the company to be capable of 10% to 15% annual revenue growth.</p>\n<p>The stock, around $197, has a rich valuation, trading for 43 times projected 2022 earnings of $4.54 a share.</p>\n<p>Staar Surgical(STAA) has developed an implantable lens to correct myopia (nearsightedness). That addresses a potentially huge market, given the rising global incidence of that vision problem. The company expects the lens, which has been available in Europe and Asia for at least five years, to be on the U.S. market in the fourth quarter, pending Food and Drug Administration approval.</p>\n<p>“It could do substantial volumes,’’ says Doug Brodie, a global manager at Baillie Gifford. “It’s early in a journey and is largely devoid of competition.”</p>\n<p>Lenses for both eyes can be implanted in less than an hour, and they don’t involve the removal of the natural lenses. The wholesale cost in the U.S. could be around $1,000 per lens.</p>\n<p>At a recent $138, Staar shares are richly valued at more than 20 times projected 2022 sales and 140 times estimated 2022 earnings. But the market opportunity is enormous: Some five billion people worldwide could have myopia by 2050.</p>\n<p>Stitch Fix(SFIX) has developed a subscription service for clothing, shoes, and other accessories and boasts over four million customers.</p>\n<p>“This could be the Nordstrom of the future,” says Mario Cibelli, chief investment officer at Marathon Partners Equity Management, a Stitch Fix holder. “This a potentially huge market and nobody is addressing it in the same way.” Using a staff of 6,000 personal stylists and lots of data, Stitch Fix seeks to identify subscriber tastes to generate high satisfaction and limit returns on packages sent at intervals and determined by subscribers.</p>\n<p>Its shares, around $44, are down 60% from their level earlier in the year, on investors’ worries about potential churn and the business’s ultimate profitability.</p>\n<p>Yet Cibelli sees revenue growth of 20%-plus annually, opportunities outside its current U.S. and U.K. markets, and a potentially very profitable business in two to three years.</p>\n<p>Trex(TREX) is the top producer of a high-end wood alternative for decks that comes from 95% recycled material, making it an eco-friendly housing play. The shares, at $105, trade for 43 times projected 2022 earnings.</p>\n<p>T. Rowe Price’s Spencer views Trex as worth the price, based on his view that it can generate sustainable annual revenue growth of 15% to 20%. Earnings are expected to climb by about 20% in 2022 and at a similar pace in the following years. “If you roll the clock forward three years, it doesn’t look as expensive,” he says.</p>\n<p>Upwork(UPWK), an online marketplace for freelance workers, is favored by Baillie Gifford’s Brodie, who says it offers a play on the greater acceptance of freelancers by businesses.</p>\n<p>The shares, recently around $44, aren’t cheap. Upwork is valued at $5.7 billion, or more than 10 times this year’s projected sales of nearly $500 million. It operates at a slight loss.</p>\n<p>The investment case is about rapid sales growth leading to ample earnings. Sales are expected to rise by 30%-plus this year and 25% for 2022.</p>\n<p>“Freelancers are more accepted by small to midsize business, but they’ve been frowned on by the HR departments at large businesses,” Brodie says. But the shares, around $185, are off nearly 30% after the company recently cut 2021 financial guidance, citing Covid-related staffing and cost issues, mostly in acquired hospice operations. The 2021 earnings estimate is now $6.13 a share, down from nearly $7. The stock trades for 30 times projected 2021 profits. Cole says that the company remains capable of generating 10% annual gains in earnings per share.\nAmyris(AMRS) is a leader in synthetic biology. It fans say its opportunity is to supplant, in an eco-friendly way, a range of products now made from petrochemicals, animals, and plants.\nUsing genetically re-engineered yeast and sugar cane, Amyris produces such things as squalane, a high-end moisturizer formerly made from shark livers; vanillin, the flavoring for vanilla; and a no-calorie sweetener normally derived from plants. The stock trades around $13.\nBarron’s wrote favorably on the company in July. Amyris sees sales reaching $2 billion by 2025, up from an estimated $400 million this year, driven by its consumer brands.\n“The world needs clean chemistry, and Amyris is the point on the spear to create it,” says Randy Baron, a portfolio manager at Pinnacle Associates, which owns Amyris shares. He thinks they could hit $75 by the end of 2022.\nBooz Allen Hamilton Holding(BAH) is an important consultant to the Defense Department and other agencies. The U.S. government accounted for 97% of its revenue in its latest fiscal year. Booz Allen has built robust ties to the government over the years by providing an array of services, like cybersecurity. Its stock trades around $81, for a 1.8% yield.\n“It has built a strong, partnership-like culture and has a long record of steady growth,” says Josh Spencer, manager of the T. Rowe Price New Horizons fund. He sees Booz Allen as capable of generating 9% to 10% annual growth in revenue and yearly gains of 15% to 16% in earnings, in line with its historical performance. The stock is off 20% from its peak of $100, amid concerns about more restrained military spending. Spencer sees the pullback as a buying opportunity, with the stock valued at less than 20 times earnings.\nJ.B. Hunt Transport Services(JBHT) is a leader in intermodal freight, which involves the fuel-efficient movement of trucks over rail lines. It has been one of the most successful trucking companies. Its stock has risen 30-fold over the past 20 years, to a recent $173. “It has an incredible franchise,” says Henry Ellenbogen, chief investment officer at Durable Capital Partners and a member of the Barron’s Roundtable.\nJ.B. Hunt’s relationship with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad gives it a strong position in intermodal freight, he notes. J.B. Hunt also has a growing business taking over the trucking operations of smaller companies. And it is involved in digital freight brokerage—matching truckers with shipping customers.\nEllenbogen says the stock is reasonable at 22 times estimated 2022 profits, given a mid-teens annual growth outlook for earnings.\nMarriott Vacations Worldwide(VAC) is one of the top companies in the timeshare industry. It has 700,000 owners, a resilient business model with significant revenue from fees, and more exposure than its peers to luxury properties in places including Hawaii and Orlando, Fla.\n“It has the best customer base, with the highest spending and an impeccable balance sheet,” says David Baron, a manager of the Baron Focused Growth fund. Marriott Vacations, whose shares recently were trading around $145, should reinstate its dividend later this year, he adds.\nThe shares, Baron argues, are cheap at a 11% free-cash-flow yield, based on 2022 estimates. He says that the stock, little changed since 2018, could produce 20% annual returns for shareholders in the coming years.\nSiteOne Landscape Supply(SITE) is the country’s top supplier of landscaping products, with ample opportunity to expand, given that it has just a 13% market share in a highly fragmented industry.\n\n“It’s growing organically and has lots of acquisition opportunities,” says Columbia’s Cole, who considers the company to be capable of 10% to 15% annual revenue growth.\nThe stock, around $197, has a rich valuation, trading for 43 times projected 2022 earnings of $4.54 a share.\nStaar Surgical(STAA) has developed an implantable lens to correct myopia (nearsightedness). That addresses a potentially huge market, given the rising global incidence of that vision problem. The company expects the lens, which has been available in Europe and Asia for at least five years, to be on the U.S. market in the fourth quarter, pending Food and Drug Administration approval.\n“It could do substantial volumes,’’ says Doug Brodie, a global manager at Baillie Gifford. “It’s early in a journey and is largely devoid of competition.”\nLenses for both eyes can be implanted in less than an hour, and they don’t involve the removal of the natural lenses. The wholesale cost in the U.S. could be around $1,000 per lens.\nAt a recent $138, Staar shares are richly valued at more than 20 times projected 2022 sales and 140 times estimated 2022 earnings. But the market opportunity is enormous: Some five billion people worldwide could have myopia by 2050.\nStitch Fix(SFIX) has developed a subscription service for clothing, shoes, and other accessories and boasts over four million customers.\n“This could be the Nordstrom of the future,” says Mario Cibelli, chief investment officer at Marathon Partners Equity Management, a Stitch Fix holder. “This a potentially huge market and nobody is addressing it in the same way.” Using a staff of 6,000 personal stylists and lots of data, Stitch Fix seeks to identify subscriber tastes to generate high satisfaction and limit returns on packages sent at intervals and determined by subscribers.\nIts shares, around $44, are down 60% from their level earlier in the year, on investors’ worries about potential churn and the business’s ultimate profitability.\nYet Cibelli sees revenue growth of 20%-plus annually, opportunities outside its current U.S. and U.K. markets, and a potentially very profitable business in two to three years.\nTrex(TREX) is the top producer of a high-end wood alternative for decks that comes from 95% recycled material, making it an eco-friendly housing play. The shares, at $105, trade for 43 times projected 2022 earnings.\nT. Rowe Price’s Spencer views Trex as worth the price, based on his view that it can generate sustainable annual revenue growth of 15% to 20%. Earnings are expected to climb by about 20% in 2022 and at a similar pace in the following years. “If you roll the clock forward three years, it doesn’t look as expensive,” he says.\nUpwork(UPWK), an online marketplace for freelance workers, is favored by Baillie Gifford’s Brodie, who says it offers a play on the greater acceptance of freelancers by businesses.\nThe shares, recently around $44, aren’t cheap. Upwork is valued at $5.7 billion, or more than 10 times this year’s projected sales of nearly $500 million. It operates at a slight loss.\nThe investment case is about rapid sales growth leading to ample earnings. Sales are expected to rise by 30%-plus this year and 25% for 2022.\n“Freelancers are more accepted by small to midsize business, but they’ve been frowned on by the HR departments at large businesses,” Brodie says. Consumer Discretionary (i.e. Retail, Travel &amp; Leisure), Semis, Banks and Energy are strong buys at current levels. For instance,\n <b>large-cap Energy is now trading at a ~10% FCF yield and a &gt;8% FCF/EV yield at $70 Brent in 2022, with leverage that is &lt;1x</b>. The sector has increasing potential for a sharp short squeeze and move higher, given its extreme disconnect from oil fundamentals (i.e. widest in 30+ years, Figure 10). In addition, our Semiconductor research argues that we are only 30-40% of the way into&nbsp; the current semiconductor upcycle and expect strong Y/Y growth into next year with positive EPS revisions for the next 3-4 quarters. Supply will likely remain tight into 2022, while demand remains strong (20-40% above companies’ ability to supply), thus this supply demand imbalance will persist through 2021. Although customers are responding to tight supply with higher than needed orders, ongoing supply tightness is limiting fulfillment. In fact, JPM expects channel and customer inventories to decline Q/Q again in the just completed June quarter.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Looking at the fundamentals, JPM predicts that S&amp;P 500 gains should also be supported by strong earnings growth and capital return until 2023,<b>and is why JPM is adjusting its above consensus S&amp;P 500 EPS by another $5 for 2022 to $230 (consensus $214) and 2023 to $250 (consensus $233).</b></p>\n<blockquote>\n This revision is largely due to global reopening which is delayed and bound to release further pent-up demand, inventory replenishment, rising profitability for Energy companies, and ongoing policy actions (childcare, infrastructure, etc). Corporate buyback announcements, typically a leading indicator of buyback execution activity and corporate confidence, have already well-exceeded 2020 levels ($431B YTD vs. $307B 2020, see Figure 25). In fact,\n <b>the rebound in announcement activity is similar to the surge post-TCJA (see Figure 23) which is tracking towards and it is likely to easily surpass ~$650B by year-end and likely to see rolling 12-month announcements surpass prior record level of ~$1T.</b>Historically, buyback announcements have been concentrated within Technology and Financials. However, YTD we are seeing strong announcement activity from Communications as well (driven by GOOGL ~$50B in Apr). For instance, an increasing number of reopening stocks are now down 30-50% from 1Q21 highs (i.e. travel, cruise lines, oil) and some have reversed back to last year June levels when COVID-19 uncertainty and economic setup were vastly worse than today.\"\nGiven the above, JPM sees \"increasingly compelling\" risk/reward for the reopening theme, which can be expressed through Consumer Recovery (JPAMCONR <Index>), Domestic Recovery (JPAMCRDB <Index>) and International Recovery (JPAMCRIB <Index>) baskets, see Fig 1.\" Additionally, JPm argues that global mobility remains nascent and its normalization will continue to release pent-up demand, while tight inventories and new orders bode positively for global growth.\nCombining all this bullishness,the JPM equity strategist is revising his EPS estimates higher by an additional $5 to $205 for 2021 and raises the bank's long-held 2021 year-end price target of 4,400 to 4,600, due to the following considerations:\n\n At a thematic/sector level, the risk/reward for reopening stocks has improved significantly with the recent pullback creating many unusually attractive opportunities for investors to re-enter various parts of the cyclical cohort. Consumer Discretionary (i.e. Retail, Travel & Leisure), Semis, Banks and Energy are strong buys at current levels. For instance,\n large-cap Energy is now trading at a ~10% FCF yield and a >8% FCF/EV yield at $70 Brent in 2022, with leverage that is <1x. The sector has increasing potential for a sharp short squeeze and move higher, given its extreme disconnect from oil fundamentals (i.e. widest in 30+ years, Figure 10). In addition, our Semiconductor research argues that we are only 30-40% of the way into  the current semiconductor upcycle and expect strong Y/Y growth into next year with positive EPS revisions for the next 3-4 quarters. Supply will likely remain tight into 2022, while demand remains strong (20-40% above companies’ ability to supply), thus this supply demand imbalance will persist through 2021. Although customers are responding to tight supply with higher than needed orders, ongoing supply tightness is limiting fulfillment. In fact, JPM expects channel and customer inventories to decline Q/Q again in the just completed June quarter.\n\nLooking at the fundamentals, JPM predicts that S&P 500 gains should also be supported by strong earnings growth and capital return until 2023,and is why JPM is adjusting its above consensus S&P 500 EPS by another $5 for 2022 to $230 (consensus $214) and 2023 to $250 (consensus $233).\n\n This revision is largely due to global reopening which is delayed and bound to release further pent-up demand, inventory replenishment, rising profitability for Energy companies, and ongoing policy actions (childcare, infrastructure, etc). We expect cumulative revenue growth of ~30% by 2023 relative to pre-COVID (FY 2019), ~150bp net income margin expansion to a record high at over 13%, and gross buybacks nearing an annual pace of ~$1t during this period.\n\nWhile all sectors are expected to contribute to earnings growth, JPM expects reflation sensitive sectors (Commodities, Financials, Industrials) and Consumer to do the heaviest lifting in the coming quarters in terms of beats and revisions.\nPutting it all together, Lakos-Bujas says that \"considering this outlook for earnings and shareholder return, we are raising our Price Target to 4,600 for year-end 2021.\"\nBut while any first year strategist can goalseek a fundamentally bullish narrative and chart it, as JPM has done below...\n... there is a very specific reason behind JPM's bullish reversal:the coming surge in buybacks which will result in a boom in shareholder returns,or as Dubravko notes, \"corporates have already increased gross buybacks from pandemic era low of $525b (trailing twelve months as of 1Q21) to an annualized run rate of ~$775b YTD and should surpass previous record of ~$850b (as of 1Q19).\"\nIn practical terms, JPM expects a sharp drop in the S&P's share count in the next 24 months as the buyback-facilitated slow-motion LBO continues.\nSome more details below on the one biggest catalyst behind JPM's SPX price target hike:\n\nExpecting a boom in shareholder return led by buybacks.Buybacks are reemerging as a key theme with net buyback activity significantly improving this year after bottoming in 2Q20. Corporate buyback announcements, typically a leading indicator of buyback execution activity and corporate confidence, have already well-exceeded 2020 levels ($431B YTD vs. $307B 2020, see Figure 25). In fact,\n the rebound in announcement activity is similar to the surge post-TCJA (see Figure 23) which is tracking towards and it is likely to easily surpass ~$650B by year-end and likely to see rolling 12-month announcements surpass prior record level of ~$1T.Historically, buyback announcements have been concentrated within Technology and Financials. However, YTD we are seeing strong announcement activity from Communications as well (driven by GOOGL ~$50B in Apr). As a reminder, ~$90B of Tech’s $133B in announcements YTD is supported by AAPL and ~$25B of Financials' ~$92B is supported by BAC.\n\nWith the June 30th lifting of pandemic era restriction on US Banks,we could see some further pick-up in buyback announcements.Dry powder (i.e. announced repurchase programs not yet executed) levels have been recovering to pre-pandemic levels (~$658B, see Figure 27) as executions have been relatively slower to rebound but should show a material sequential growth in the coming quarters. With record profit margins (~13% in 2022 vs ~11.5% in 2019), bloated cash levels of $2.0T ex-financials (vs. $1.6T pre- COVID), and lower high grade debt yields (JULI at 2.6% now, vs 3.3% prepandemic),we are expecting a boom in buyback activity over the next year.Gross buybacks should surpass the prior executed high of $850b.\nIn summary,assuming $875b in buybacks and dividend income (NOKIA.HE) and GameStop Corp. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GME\">$(GME)$</a>.)</p>\n<p><b>Short squeezes and meme stocks</b></p>\n<p>Traders looking to group together on social media to make quick killings by pushing up share prices of companies at early stages or those going through difficult times have been setting up short squeezes.</p>\n<p>Professional investors have traditionally short-sold shares of companies they believe will perform worse than most other investors or analysts expect. Shorting means borrowing a company's shares and selling them immediately, in the hope of buying them back at a lower price, returning them to the lender and pocketing the difference. If you simply buy a stock hoping it will go up, all you risk is the money you invest. You might get wiped out. But if you short a stock, your risk potential is unlimited. You never know how high the price might rise if you have gotten the trade wrong.</p>\n<p>\"Covering\" a short position is when you buy back the shares to return them to the investor who lent them to you. You are hoping to cover at a lower price than you sold the shares for, to make a profit.</p>\n<p>To have a short position, you need to have a margin account with a broker -- an account that lets you borrow to invest or trade. Because of the risk in taking a short position, if the share price goes against you (higher), your broker will keep increasing its collateral requirements. If you run out of cash as the price keeps rising, you will be forced to cover at a loss. That type of action among a large group of short-sellers pushes the price higher in a spiral -- a short squeeze.</p>\n<p><b>Six more meme stocks</b></p>\n<p>The action changes daily. On June 9, for example, shares of Clover Health Investments Corp. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CLOV\">$(CLOV)$</a> fell 24% after rising 86% the day before. Is the SEC watching?</p>\n<p>Here are the six additional meme stocks, following our initial group of eight , sorted by market capitalization as of the close on June 9:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/45b4fabbee4e18ee1b473200ab3a7c4b\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"300\"></p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PLTR\">Palantir Technologies Inc.</a> (PLTR) provides a software platform used by government defense and intelligence agencies. It is the largest company on the list by market cap, but not by revenue, as you can see below. A year-to-date chart of its price performance shows how wild the meme-stock action can be:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1d9a8e2dfc61b0e4ff70a8630193cecb\" tg-width=\"1259\" tg-height=\"1038\"></p>\n<p>Palantir's stock was up 3% for 2021 through June 9, but its market cap had increased by 26% because the company had been raising cash by selling additional shares to investors. The company's following as a meme stock seems to spring more from its growth prospects than from short interest, which peaked at 8.5% of shares available for sale, according to FactSet.</p>\n<p>Wendy's Co. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WEN\">$(WEN)$</a> is another meme stock whose addition to the group may be a bit confusing, as the stock isn't heavily shorted and the company is stable. Thornton McEnery dug into the action on June 8, which may have included confusion over Wendy's ticker symbol , when the stock rose 26%.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WISH\">ContextLogic Inc.</a> (WISH) is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of two stocks on the new list that have fallen this year. The mobile e-commerce company's stock opened below its initial public offering price before the IPO.</p>\n<p><b>Short interest</b></p>\n<p>Keeping the group in the same order, here are levels of short interest as percentages of available shares and in dollars:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d0875b54168c760b950d250308eb5efd\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"390\"></p>\n<p>FactSet's data on short positions as a percentage of shares outstanding is updated twice a month. The data was updated overnight between June 9 and 10. The second update takes place around the 25th day of the month.</p>\n<p>Clover is the most heavily shorted stock on the list. Brad Lamensdorf, CEO of ActiveAlts in Westport, Conn., who runs long and short investment strategies, said previously that a short percentage \"over 30% to 40% is outrageously high.\" (Lamensdorf co-manages the AdvisorShares <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/HDGE\">Ranger Equity Bear ETF</a> (HDGE), which is meant to be used as a hedging tool.)</p>\n<p>A high percentage of shares sold short makes a stock especially dangerous for the short-sellers, because it can increase the intensity of any short squeeze.</p>\n<p>We have shown the short interest as a percentage of market cap in order to provide context. Tesla Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TSLA\">$(TSLA)$</a> is an excellent example to provide more context, because the company has such a large market capitalization of $576.8 billion. Only 5.16% of the shares are sold short, but that comes to $29.8 billion in short interest -- the most (in dollars) for any stock in the S&amp;P 500. Amazon.com Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMZN\">$(AMZN)$</a> ranks second for dollars of short interest in the benchmark index, with 1.09% of shares sold short, which comes to $18.1 billion in short interest for a company with a market cap of $1.66 trillion.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GOEV\">Canoo Inc.</a> (GOEV) is the second-most heavily shorted stock listed above, at 29.5%. The electric-vehicle maker was formed on Dec. 21 through the merger of Canoo Holdings Ltd. and Hennessy Capital Acquisition Corp. IV, a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. Canoo expects to produce its first vehicle in mid-2022 in limited quantities, with \"serial production launching in 2023,\" according to its 10-K report filed on March 31.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CLNE\">Clean Energy Fuels Corp</a>. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CLNE.AU\">$(CLNE.AU)$</a> provides natural gas for use as an alternative to gasoline or diesel for fleets of vehicles. The stock is 6.58% sold-short, but has had a good run this year as the energy sector has recovered.</p>\n<p><b>Fundamentals</b></p>\n<p>We'll look back at sales results for this group of six meme stocks and then look ahead at sales estimates through 2023.</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>Looking back</b></li>\n</ul>\n<p>First, here's a comparison of annual sales, in millions of dollars for the past five reported fiscal years (where available):</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bcc4fbd762406f0684e991d289b8b760\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"392\"></p>\n<p>You can see clear growth paths in recent years for Palantir, Wendy's and ContextLogic, while Clean Energy Fuels had understandable challenges from lower natural gas prices in 2020.</p>\n<p>Clover was incorporated on Oct. 18, 2019. It hasn't yet reported annual revenue. For the first quarter, the company reported $200.3 million in sales, up from $165.5 million in the first quarter of 2020. Clover merged with <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/IPOC.U\">Social Capital Hedosophia Holdings Corp. III</a> (a SPAC) on Jan. 7.</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>Looking ahead -- sales</b></li>\n</ul>\n<p>Starting from a baseline of calendar 2021, here are sales estimates going out through 2023 among Wall Street analysts polled by FactSet:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/37c11916067fb3829caff57a89cf17f0\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"380\"></p>\n<p>Double-digit or better sales growth is expected for all of the companies over the next two years except Wendy's. Price-to-sale ratios, based on closing share prices on June 9 and the 2023 estimates, are included. In comparison, the S&amp;P 500 trades for 2.5 times its weighted aggregate consensus sales estimate for 2023.</p>\n<p><b>Looking ahead -- earnings</b></p>\n<p>Here are earnings-per-share estimates going out to 2023:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4cf06aa00f9303dda82b1c3f8cf34c21\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"500\"></p>\n<p>You might not have expected the EPS projections to be particularly useful, but they underscore how high these stocks are trading. The S&amp;P 500 trades for 18.4 times its consensus EPS estimate for 2023.</p>\n<p>The estimates show expected improvement for Palantir, if it manages to maintain its rapid sales growth. Wendy's is expected to improve EPS significantly even with modest sale growth, in part because of stock buybacks .</p>\n<p><b>Wall Street's opinion</b></p>\n<p>Here's a summary of opinion for this group of meme stocks among Wall Street analysts:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c2dfa61b27c34a6c17f5b4d2119126f9\" tg-width=\"1259\" tg-height=\"373\"></p>\n<p>So the Wall Street analysts have the most love for ContextLogic, with 82% \"buy\" or equivalent ratings.
