That sell-off has created a buying opportunity, and two stocks down big that look especially promising are Roku and Shopify.Here's a closer look at why each of these growth stocks holds significant long-term promise despite being down more than 50% over the past 12 months.1. Roku: Streaming is still growingRoku stock is down a whopping 89% from its peak in 2021, as seemingly everything has gone wrong for the leading streaming platform.First, subscriber growth in services like Netflix seemed to hit a ceiling after a surge in growth earlier in the pandemic. The ad market also shriveled as brands are preparing for a recession and cutting spending. In fact, the slowdown is bad enough that Roku actually forecast a decline in revenue in the fourth quarter.Roku has also swung from profits in 2021 to sizable losses as the company stepped up its investments in the business just as revenue growth started to slow.However, it's a mistake to think the Roku growth story is dead. In fact, the company continues to grow users and viewing time, which is a sign that demand for its service remains strong.Earlier in January, the company said it had topped 70 million active accounts globally, adding 9.9 million in 2022, more than the 8.9 million it gained in 2021. The company also said streaming hours increased 19% in the year to 87.4 billion, showing that Roku users are spending more time with the platform.Roku's business is centered around advertising. It takes a 30% share of ad inventory from its streaming partners, and with several legacy media companies having recently launched streaming services and Netflix and Disney recently adding advertising tiers, Roku should get some significant tailwinds over time.Despite the current headwinds, Roku's long-term growth still looks promising, and the stock should recover once the ad market picks up.2. Shopify: E-commerce will reboundMuch like Roku stock plunged on weakness in the streaming industry, so has Shopify plunged due to the slowdown in e-commerce.Shares of the e-commerce software leader have tumbled after surging on strong growth during the pandemic. Revenue growth has slowed as its profits have turned into losses, and it has seen a stretched valuation, which was up to a price-to-sales ratio over 50 at one point during the pandemic.Shopify is far from the only e-commerce stock that's struggling lately. In fact, most have experienced the whipsaw effect of a boom and bust during the pandemic, including Amazon, Etsy, and Wayfair.Despite those headwinds, the long-term opportunity for Shopify is still intact. It's the clear leader in e-commerce software, and it's still outgrowing the industry, posting 21% constant-currency growth in gross merchandise volume during the Black Friday weekend. In addition, retail sales volume should continue to shift from brick-and-mortar stores to the online channel over time as delivery gets faster and more convenient and finding the product you want gets even easier.As a software company, Shopify also has the capability to be highly profitable once the business scales and starts to mature, though the company has spent aggressively on growth throughout its history. For example, it spent $2.1 billion last year to acquire Deliverr, a fulfillment technology company, to beef up its own fulfillment network to better compete with Amazon. Banks generally make money by borrowing money short and lending it out long—andmaking a profit off the spread. When longer-term rates rise faster than shorter-term ones, bank margins generally get better, while the profits deteriorate when the opposite happens.</p>\n<p>After Wednesday’s meeting, the 10-year yield got a big bounce—it rose 0.071% to 1.569%—while thetwo-year yield rose0.038 percentage point to 0.203%, putting the spread between the two at 1.366 percentage points. That widening made the financial sector generally, and bank stocks specifically, one of the few sectors to react positively to the Fed’s announcement on Wednesday. TheSPDR S&amp;P Bank ETF(KBE) rose 0.9%, whileJPMorgan Chase(JPM) rose 0.7%, even as theS&amp;P 500fell 0.5%, theDow Jones Industrial Averagedropped 0.8%, and theNasdaq Compositedeclined 0.2%</p>\n<p>The market, however, has had a change of heart. The 10-year yield has fallen to 1.498%, while the two-year has risen to 0.238%, putting the gap at 1.26 percentage points. That so-called flattening of the yield curve is bad news for a rate-sensitive sector like banks. The SPDR S&amp;P Bank ETF fell 4.5% on Thurdsay and 1% in premarket trading on Friday. JPMorgan dropped 2.9% on Thursday and is down about 1% on Friday. S&amp;P 500 futures on Friday were down 0.6%, while Dow futures were down 0.8%. Futures for the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.4%.</p>\n<p>Why the about-face from the market? For yields to keep rising, the economy needs to show that it is recovering quickly. In fact, the company continues to grow users and viewing time, which is a sign that demand for its service remains strong.Earlier in January, the company said it had topped 70 million active accounts globally, adding 9.9 million in 2022, more than the 8.9 million it gained in 2021. The company also said streaming hours increased 19% in the year to 87.4 billion, showing that Roku users are spending more time with the platform.Roku's business is centered around advertising. It takes a 30% share of ad inventory from its streaming partners, and with several legacy media companies having recently launched streaming services and Netflix and Disney recently adding advertising tiers, Roku should get some significant tailwinds over time.Despite the current headwinds, Roku's long-term growth still looks promising, and the stock should recover once the ad market picks up.2. Shopify: E-commerce will reboundMuch like Roku stock plunged on weakness in the streaming industry, so has Shopify plunged due to the slowdown in e-commerce.Shares of the e-commerce software leader have tumbled after surging on strong growth during the pandemic. Revenue growth has slowed as its profits have turned into losses, and it has seen a stretched valuation, which was up to a price-to-sales ratio over 50 at one point during the pandemic.Shopify is far from the only e-commerce stock that's struggling lately. In fact, most have experienced the whipsaw effect of a boom and bust during the pandemic, including Amazon, Etsy, and Wayfair.Despite those headwinds, the long-term opportunity for Shopify is still intact. It's the clear leader in e-commerce software, and it's still outgrowing the industry, posting 21% constant-currency growth in gross merchandise volume during the Black Friday weekend. In addition, retail sales volume should continue to shift from brick-and-mortar stores to the online channel over time as delivery gets faster and more convenient and finding the product you want gets even easier.As a software company, Shopify also has the capability to be highly profitable once the business scales and starts to mature, though the company has spent aggressively on growth throughout its history. For example, it spent $2.1 billion last year to acquire Deliverr, a fulfillment technology company, to beef up its own fulfillment network to better compete with Amazon. But in the wake of this year's sell-off, FedEx (FDX -0.50%), Old Dominion Freight Lines (ODFL -6.18%), and Lowe's (LOW -1.39%) look like great discounted options for long-term dividend investors.FedEx: A well-covered dividend at a discounted priceDown nearly 40% year to date and off by more than 20% in the last month alone, shipping juggernaut FedEx has been under increased pressure since it delivered its fiscal 2023 first-quarter report.For the period, which ended Aug. 31, FedEx reported year-over-year declines in volume of 11% and 3% from its Express and Ground operations, respectively, but it still grew revenue by 6%, thanks partly to higher fuel surcharges.However, these surcharges did not keep pace with the weakening macroeconomic conditions and ballooning fuel costs facing FedEx. Customers repeat the mode of payment on their way out the door and receive a digital receipt on their Amazon account.</p>\n<p>Along the way, shoppers can move about the store as they normally would at any grocer. Amazon's technology, which combines sensors, \"deep learning\" and \"computer vision,\" can keep track of items added to or removed from a cart.</p>\n<p>Shoppers who want the traditional grocery store experience can opt for that, and pay using a card, cash, SNAP EBT or a code from the Amazon app.</p>\n<p>\"Bringing Just Walk Out technology to a full-size grocery space with the Amazon Fresh store in Bellevue showcases the technology's continued ability to scale and adapt to new environments and selection,\" said Dilip Kumar, vice president of physical retail and technology at Amazon, in a statement.</p>\n<p>Amazon has been opening Go stores nationwide over recent years.</p>\n<p>The new Bellevue Amazon Fresh store will be stocked with fruit, meat, prepared foods and all the other items <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> would find in a traditional grocery store.</p>\n<p>The first Amazon Fresh store opened in August 2020 and now there are more than a dozen across California, Illinois, and Virginia.</p>\n<p>Retailers in the grocery space are increasingly using technology to enhance customer service options and get a leg up on the competition.</p>\n<p>Kroger Co. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/KR\">$(KR)$</a> and its partner Ocado Group <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PLC\">PLC</a> opened a high-tech fulfillment center in April that has more than 1,000 bots working alongside human staff.</p>\n<p>And Walmart Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WMT\">$(WMT)$</a> will be piloting self-checkouts in stores this summer, including <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> in Terrace, British Columbia.</p>\n<p>\"One of the new initiatives we will be testing later this summer in a handful of stores -- including in Terrace -- is offering 100% self-checkout by removing the traditional 'belted' checkout lanes,\" Walmart said in a statement sent to MarketWatch.</p>\n<p>\"Our customers have embraced self-checkouts as they've rolled out across the country over the past few years. We've also been enhancing the self-checkout lanes by having larger kiosk areas so customers have more space to organize and lay out their purchases.\"</p>\n<p>Walmart began experimenting with this technology in the U.S. last summer.</p>\n<p>\"Over the years we've heard concerns that self-checkouts will impact jobs but that's simply not the case,\" the Walmart statement said.</p>\n<p>\"The self-checkout area will be staffed by dedicated associates to help our customers and there will be no job loss as a result of this change. In fact, our Terrace store is hiring for more than 40 jobs including roles in omnichannel, as we're launching online grocery at this store in the coming months.\"</p>\n<p>UBS analysts estimated in a May report that Amazon accounted for just 2.8% of U.S. grocery industry sales in 2020 but forecasts its share could rise to 5.7% by 2025.</p>\n<p>\"Now, between the sharp rise in online grocery penetration, Amazon's learnings from Whole Foods Market, and the opening of its initial 12 Fresh, conventional grocery locations, we think its share is set to sharply increase,\" analysts wrote.</p>\n<p>\"Given the valuable data it has on Prime members, it can use this to best determine where it locates stores and how to stock them with inventory.
