The market: QQQ and SPY fell as Warsh gave no answer on October rates
$Invesco QQQ(QQQ)$ fell 2.50 per cent to US$709.80 on Friday and $SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$ fell 1.11 per cent to US$763.25. Headline CPI was 3.7 per cent from a year earlier in September, above the market's 3.6 per cent expectation and the prior 3.4 per cent reading. PPI reached 6.3 per cent, above the 5.5 per cent expected and the revised prior 5.6 per cent. Consecutive upside inflation surprises forced highly valued technology to absorb the rate repricing first.
Fed chair Kevin Warsh did not prejudge the meeting on 27–28 October. He reiterated the commitment to price stability while describing AI as a positive supply shock, leaving the market without an explicit signal for either a rise or relief. Bonds already price the possibility of a third increase. Equities are facing more than one volatile data release: rates may remain elevated for longer.
Chips: Nvidia held up better while AMD and memory absorbed concentrated selling
$NVIDIA(NVDA)$ fell 1.43 per cent to US$214.13 on Friday, while $Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ fell 5.95 per cent, $Micron Technology(MU)$ 5.63 per cent, $SanDisk Corp.(SNDK)$ 6.85 per cent, $SK hynix(SKHY)$ 6.58 per cent and $Broadcom(AVGO)$ 4.52 per cent. Within the same AI hardware chain, Nvidia showed clear relative strength as money left higher-beta chip and memory positions first.
Public reports pointed to approximately US$34 million of liquidations in AI chip bets, while bonds became more closely correlated with the AI trade. That relative resilience suggests that cloud capital spending and demand for high-end compute have not yet been revised materially lower. The deeper falls in AMD, memory and Broadcom show that investors are examining funding costs, the memory cycle and investment returns at the same time. Earnings season must answer more than whether AI demand exists; it must show whether that demand supports valuations across the supply chain.
SpaceX, Meta and Tesla report this week, putting AI returns into the numbers
SpaceX reports on Tuesday, with Netflix later the same day, followed by Meta and Tesla after the close on Wednesday. $SpaceX(SPCX)$ fell 1.74 per cent on Friday, $Meta Platforms, Inc.(META)$ fell 3.72 per cent and $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ fell 2.13 per cent, showing that investors had already lowered their tolerance for disappointment in highly valued platforms.
Consensus for SpaceX is earnings per share of US$0.139 on revenue of US$12.96 billion. Meta is expected to earn US$6.3122 per share on US$64.57 billion of revenue, while Tesla is expected at US$0.4459 per share on US$28.42 billion. SpaceX must show that Starlink, launches and AI spending can produce cash flow. Meta must show that advertising can cover capital expenditure. Tesla needs margins and autonomous-driving progress to support its growth expectations. Netflix's subscriptions and advertising monetisation will set an early benchmark for consumer-platform valuations.
LRCX and WDC follow, testing hardware demand through orders and margins
Semiconductor-equipment maker $Lam Research(LRCX)$ reports after the close on Wednesday, with consensus at US$2.2189 per share on US$8.31 billion of revenue. $Western Digital(WDC)$ follows after the close on Thursday, with US$4.1122 per share and US$4.17 billion expected. The two results test the AI hardware cycle from equipment investment and storage demand.
LRCX's advanced-node and memory-equipment orders will test whether chipmakers still intend to expand capacity. Western Digital's cloud demand, pricing and margins will test whether the memory sell-off has run ahead of fundamentals. Strong equipment orders and stable storage margins would make the hardware decline look more like a valuation adjustment. Weakness on both sides would give business evidence to concerns about returns on capital spending.
CoreWeave and Nebius plunged as credit pressure moved into the earnings test
$CoreWeave, Inc.(CRWV)$ fell 11.91 per cent to US$61.39 on Friday and $NEBIUS(NBIS)$ fell 12.18 per cent to US$165.47. Bond markets continued to warn about the risk of leveraged compute expansion. CoreWeave's founders have sold approximately US$3.3 billion of shares since the listing, adding to concern about funding constraints and alignment with outside investors.
Nebius is expected to report on Thursday, with consensus for a loss of US$0.8017 per share on US$0.92 billion of revenue. The near-term loss is not the only question. Contract quality, data-centre delivery, utilisation and financing capacity will show whether the neocloud model can reach scale. If the platform companies keep expanding AI budgets this week, demand concern may ease. If Nebius cannot show a route to cash recovery, credit pressure will continue to constrain the valuation.
This is personal analysis and not investment advice.
💬 【Talking Point】
Do platform earnings have enough power to calm the credit market, or does the burden now sit with free cash flow?

For my portfolio, I will be watching NVDA, $Micron Technology(MU)$ and NBIS closely. Nvidia’s relative resilience is encouraging, while memory stocks face both valuation pressure and concerns about future competition. For NBIS, I still believe in the long-term opportunity, but financing risks and the path to positive cash flow cannot be ignored.
Ultimately, I believe this earnings season will separate companies with genuine AI monetization from those relying heavily on future expectations. I will stay disciplined, avoid panic selling, and look for solid fundamentals and technical support before adding to positions. Consistency over noise!
