Pre-Earnings Analysis.
As $Netflix(NFLX)$ prepares to report its Q3 2026 earnings on Tue, 30 Oct 2026, after the market closes, investors face a critical turning point.
Once a high-flying growth darling, NFLX has experienced a difficult 2026.
Share prices are down roughly -25% YTD and -42% over the last 12 months, pulling the stock to around $69 - 70 per share (down from higher past levels, though still up +97.6% over a 3 year period).
To decide whether NFLX remains a buy before its Q3 2026 earnings report, investors need to examine the (a) company's current business situation, (b) financial strength, and (c) stock valuation.
They should also compare the short-term outlook with the long-term prospects using recent company updates and market comments.
1. Current Biz Environment & Growth Squeeze
NFLX remains the undisputed leader in global streaming with over 325 million subscribers.
It has vastly outperformed old Hollywood media giants like ex-Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), $Walt Disney(DIS)$, $Paramount Skydance Corp(SKYD)$, and $Sony(SONY)$.
For comparison, while WBD reported $149 million in net income on $8.7 billion in revenue in its period before the Skydance merger, NFLX generated $3.4 billion in net income on $12.6 billion in revenue, for the same timeframe.
However, NFLX is facing (1) a top-line slowdown and (2) slowing user engagement:
Slowing Revenue Growth:
-
In Q2 2026 revenue rose +13.4% YoY to $12.6 billion.
-
For coming Q3 2026, Management projects revenue to reach $12.87 billion (a +11.7% YoY growth rate) and full-year 2026 revenue of $51.0 - $51.4 billion (a +13% to +14% growth).
-
For 2027, Wall Street analysts project growth to slow further to +11.2%.
Engagement & Ad Risks:
-
In recent tracking, average daily viewing hours per subscriber dropped -8.0%.
-
Its share of US TV viewing hit a multi-year low, suggesting subscriber attention is fragmenting across other formats.
Worker Cutbacks:
-
To protect its profit margins, projected at 31.5% for 2026 (up from 29.5% in 2024), NFLX announced its largest layoffs, cutting about 1,000 jobs (or 6% of its 16,000 workforce), in product, technology, legal, and HR teams. (see below)
Evolving Business Model:
-
To counter slowing member engagement, NFLX is shifting into new revenue drivers.
-
Its ad-supported plan (launched in 2022) is projected to generate $3 billion in revenue this year.
-
The company is also expanding into live-streamed sports, video games, and physical entertainment centers in American malls.
2. Q3 Earnings Predictions & Short-Term Odds
For the upcoming Q3 report, consensus forecasts call for earnings per share (EPS) of $0.82; that is a +39% YoY on a $12.87 billion in revenue.
Analysis breakdown.
From a short-term trading perspective, NFLX is not a compelling candidate for an immediate earnings beat :
(a) Earnings Estimates & Sentiment: While recent analyst estimates sit slightly above consensus by +0.25%, the stock carries a poor overall sell recommendation from covering analysts. This combination makes positive earnings beat difficult to predict with confidence.
(b) Historical Track Record: In Q2, NFLX delivered an EPS of $0.80 versus $0.79 expected (with a minor +1.27% beat). Over the last 4 quarters, NFLX has beaten earnings estimates only twice.
(c) Muted Price Expectations: NFLX issued weak Q3 guidance following its Q2 results, and its overall growth rate is steady but slowing. Consequently, analysts do not expect dramatic stock price movements after coming 20 Oct 2026 report unless a major, unexpected story breaks.
3. Cash Flow, Valuation & Comparison to AI Stocks
Despite growth concerns, NFLX holds clear financial strengths that protect its downside:
(a) Massive Free Cash Flow (FCF): Over the last 12 months, NFLX generated $11.3 billion in FCF, compared to $11 billion in net income on $45.2 billion in revenue in 2025.
Unlike big tech AI companies spending hundreds of billions on infrastructure with unproven payoffs, NFLX runs a mature, highly profitable cash engine.
(b) Attractive Valuation:
The stock trades at roughly 22x trailing earnings and +19.6x forward earnings, putting its valuation right on par with the broader S&P 500 index.
(c) Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Value:
A DCF valuation model based on $11.3 billion in FCF and conservative growth estimates places NFLX's true intrinsic value meaningfully above its current $70 price tag.
Community bull-case estimates suggest NFLX is -14% undervalued, while Wall Street analysts hold an average 1-year price target of $92 per share.
With a stock price of $72.69 (as of 15 Oct 2026 intraday), this represents a +26.56% upside. Conversely, bear-case narratives consider it 17% overvalued due to engagement headwinds.
Still a Buy ?
The answer depends heavily on an investor's goals & time horizon:
For Short-Term Traders (Avoid / Hold)
If an investor’s goal is to play the 20 Oct 2026 earnings release for a quick post-earnings pop, then NFLX is not a strong buy right now.
Its weak earnings-beat probability, downward-revised analyst EPS estimates over the last 30 days, and decelerating revenue trend make a sudden upward surge unlikely in the immediate term.
For Long-Term Investors (Buy)
If the goal is building a durable, multi-year portfolio, then NFLX remains a strong buy at current prices.
Why ?
1. King of Streaming Content: It has proven its ability to pivot from mail-in DVDs to online streaming, to original content, to ad-supported plans, live sports, and gaming. Its "Rule Breaker" management team constantly adapts to stay ahead of legacy Hollywood studios.
2. Bargain Price Tag: With the stock down -20.20% YTD (as of 15 Oct 2026) and -39.66% over the past year, investors are getting a dominant media market leader at an S&P 500 market-average valuation of 19.6x its forward earnings.
3. Cash Generation over Hype: While faster-growing AI stocks may offer higher upside, NFLX provides stable, multi-billion-dollar cash flows without the massive capital expenditure risks currently plaguing AI spending.
Short-seller interest is very low (only 2% of shares shorted), indicating that institutional bears are not actively betting against the company.
Conclusion: For patient investors who value high free cash flow, market dominance, and a ‘cheap’ entry price following a temporary share drop, NFLX is a bargain and a solid buy for the long haul.
Technical Analysis.
To further substantiate on whether NFLX is a buy, looking at its technical indicators of Simple Moving Average, MACD and RSI could shed some light.
Simple Moving Average (SMA).
On 15 Oct 2026, NFLX ended the day at $72.61 /share. This is higher than its 20-day SMA ($70.38) but lower than its SMAs of 50-day ($75.15) and 200-day ($83.00).
This suggests a short-term recovery. But the broader trend remains bearish. NFLX could test the 50-day’s $75.15 next, but only a sustained move above that level would strengthen the recovery.
The death cross formation on 05 Dec 2025, established the current ongoing macro bear trend.
MACD.
Both MACD line (−1.20) and Signal line (−1.72) are below the Zero line, showing that underlying momentum remains bearish.
However, both are turning upward toward zero, suggesting that downward momentum is fading and it does not mean an uptrend is already confirmed, not yet.
The MACD has crossed above the Signal line and is rising faster, an early bullish sign.
This points toward further short-term recovery, although the crossover remains below the Zero line, hence still sits within a still-weak broader trend.
The positive Divergence reading (+0.52) with recent expanding green bars show that upward momentum is strengthening.
This supports the rebound theory, but does not by itself confirm a lasting reversal.
RSI.
The 14-day RSI of 51.98 is just above the neutral 50 level, indicating a slight bullish bias.
Its recent rise supports the recovery, while remaining well below the overbought level of 70.
However, a reading only slightly above 50 does not yet show strong buying momentum.
My viewpoints : (mine only)
At $72.61, NFLX is about -33.99% below its 14 Nov 2025 forward stock-split price of $110.29.
However, NFLX’s 15 Oct 2026 stock price is not proof of today’s bargain.
It still has work to do and to fend off the ‘hostile’ merger of Paramount-Sky & Warner Bros. Discovery Inc effects, to remain as the last one standing.
NFLX remains a selective long-term buy on its cash generation, not a bet that it must return to its split-day price. Agree ?

And, Nasdaq is set to open lower by -0.27%.
With a pessimistic Nasdaq, NFLX is not spared either. It is poised to open lower by -3.25% at $70.23 per share.
If Nasdaq dips further, think NFLX cannot escape a similar fate.
Should we rejoice? Of course not, it's still a dip nonetheless.
