The market: inflation returned as AI hardware faced both rate and earnings pressure
The $S&P 500(.SPX)$ fell 1.11 per cent to 7,718.94 on Wednesday, while $Invesco QQQ(QQQ)$ lost 1.97 per cent to close at US$728.95. Headline CPI rose 3.7 per cent from a year earlier in September, above the market's 3.6 per cent expectation and August's 3.4 per cent reading. The return of inflation pushed rate expectations higher, and technology fell substantially more than the broader market.
As rate expectations move higher, the present value of future earnings falls; the more a share price depends on growth further into the future, the greater the valuation pressure. AI hardware also faced several industry developments on the same day: CXMT's move into server memory, questions about the neocloud business model and TSMC's approaching results. Funding costs and earnings expectations came under scrutiny together, amplifying the sector decline. Petrol prices rose 9.1 per cent from the previous month and accounted for more than half of the monthly rise in headline CPI. Core CPI increased 0.3 per cent from the previous month, unchanged from August, while its annual rate rose from 2.4 per cent to 2.6 per cent. Energy was an important driver of the rebound, but core inflation also moved higher.
Memory: CXMT targeted server memory and put pricing power under pressure
$Micron Technology(MU)$ fell 4.08 per cent to US$914.13, $SanDisk Corp.(SNDK)$ fell 5.33 per cent to US$1,403.34, $SK hynix(SKHY)$ fell 6.06 per cent to US$147.55 and $Western Digital(WDC)$ fell 4.36 per cent to US$364.10. CXMT plans to introduce server DDR5 memory based on a new architecture before the end of the year. Server memory has demanding reliability and stability requirements. Entering that market would move CXMT towards higher-value products and prompted investors to reassess the future supply picture.
Earnings expectations for memory companies are highly sensitive to prices. Tight supply supports increases, while additional capacity may reduce pricing power. Public information still lacks sufficient data on yields, customer qualification and volume shipments, however, so the product plan remains some distance from affecting global prices. Server DDR5 concerns DRAM first; it does not mean that NAND flash, hard drives and HBM all face the same supply shock. The broad decline reflected the spread of competitive concern, while the effect on earnings will depend on product overlap and the scale of additional supply.
Chips: Nvidia and AMD fell before TSMC's results tested the quality of demand
$NVIDIA(NVDA)$ fell 3.16 per cent to US$221.30 and $Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ fell 5.73 per cent to US$570.82, both substantially underperforming the S&P 500. The inflation data lowered valuations, while TSMC's results due on Thursday turned attention back to whether AI demand was being converted into orders.
The important figures will be advanced-node orders, advanced-packaging demand and the support that demand provides for margins and capital expenditure. Continued order growth would reinforce earnings expectations for AI chips. A weaker demand outlook would deepen concern about capacity expansion and customer spending. Nvidia and AMD are more directly exposed to TSMC's manufacturing capacity and delivery schedule. Intel also has questions around the competitiveness of its own products and progress in its foundry business.
Nebius fell sharply as compute expansion faced a cash-return test
$NEBIUS(NBIS)$ fell 10.08 per cent to US$186.01. Public reports linked the pressure to Gartner's warning about risks in the neocloud model, while peer CoreWeave also fell more than 15 per cent. The market's scrutiny of AI had moved beyond chip orders to the operating returns earned by the buyers of compute. A neocloud must invest in GPUs, data centres and power before recovering the cost gradually through customer usage. Higher financing costs add to the burden of expansion, while delivery delays or inadequate utilisation lengthen the payback period.
$Microsoft(MSFT)$ fell 1.80 per cent to US$533.69. Public information shows that the company announced Maia 300 on 12 October and plans to begin deploying it in 2027, expanding the use of in-house chips for inference across its own products and services. Nebius needs new data centres to produce steady revenue, while Microsoft hopes to lower inference costs with an in-house chip. Both routes will ultimately be tested by profit and cash flow: whether unit costs fall as compute expands and whether new revenue covers the investment.
Apple rose against the market as Apple TV pricing tested its ecosystem premium
$Apple(AAPL)$ rose 0.50 per cent to US$342.96, showing relative resilience as technology shares came under pressure. The company had released a new Apple TV 4K the previous day, priced at US$299 in the United States, with an A19 chip and features including Siri AI. The previous 128GB model with an Ethernet port was initially priced at US$149 and was later increased to US$249. The new model is close to twice the original price and about US$50 above the most recent price.
The higher price can raise revenue per unit, but it also widens the gap with cheaper streaming devices. Apple must support that premium through features, experience and ecosystem integration. The result will depend on sales and actual usage, and the available information is not enough to attribute Apple's relative strength that day directly to this product.

我会重点观察三个指标:
1)长期客户合同能否兑现;
2)GPU利用率和现金流是否持续改善;
