$Amazon.com(AMZN)$ Amazon has signed a 20-year, $3B+ agreement with $Constellation Energy Corp(CEG)$ to help upgrade the Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center, a nuclear site on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay, by adding 190 megawatts of power that will feed back into the regional grid. That is enough to power about 147,000 new homes.
In return, Constellation will supply Amazon with up to 690 megawatts of power long term from across its fleet, plus a 20-year fixed or structured contract that provides predictable power pricing across its AWS data centers and logistics footprint in the PJM electricity market, covering 13 states including Virginia and Maryland.
This deal supports Amazon's goal to power all operations with 100% renewable/carbon-free energy matching, directly satisfying the power profile required by data center loads. Amazon gets the environmental attributes tied to 690 MW of zero-carbon nuclear output.
It also answers the criticism that hyperscalers are simply re-routing existing clean energy away from homes by directly funding 190 MW of brand-new capacity.
