Lumentum Earnings Preview: Can Lasers Outrun the CPO Scare?

$Lumentum(LITE)$  , a leading supplier of optical components and systems for cloud and AI networks, will report fiscal Q4 earnings after the market close on August 11. The key focus this quarter is whether AI-driven optical demand can keep revenue and margins at elevated levels.

Core Financial Indicators

– Revenue consensus of $990 million, up 106% YoY and 22% QoQ, vs. prior guidance of $960 million–$1.01 billion.

– Non-GAAP gross margin consensus of 48.8%, up 11pp YoY and 0.9pp QoQ; Non-GAAP operating margin consensus of 35.3%, up 20.3pp YoY and 3pp QoQ, vs. prior guidance of 35%–36%.

– Non-GAAP net income consensus of $300 million, up 373% YoY and 33% QoQ, vs. the high end of prior guidance at $290 million.

The numbers matter, but the forward guide matters more. Here are the three things investors should watch.

Three Things to Watch

Can $1 billion become the new baseline?

Q3 revenue surged 90% YoY to $808.4 million. For Q4, management expects more than half of the sequential growth to come from components, with high-speed transceivers and OCS driving much of the rest.

Cloud transceiver revenue already grew more than 40% sequentially in Q3, while $Lumentum (LITE.US)$ expects 1.6T transceiver shipments to ramp in Q4.

That makes fiscal Q1 guidance the key number. Another guide above $1 billion would strengthen the case that Lumentum has entered a structurally higher revenue run rate.

Can margins stay near record levels?

Lumentum's biggest surprise has been profitability.

Non-GAAP gross margin reached 47.9% in Q3, up 540 basis points sequentially. Management attributed the improvement to better manufacturing utilization, selective pricing and favorable mix, particularly stronger data center laser chips.

Demand remains tight. 200G EML revenue more than doubled sequentially, Japan wafer capacity remains fully allocated, and Lumentum expects EML unit shipments to grow more than 50% YoY by the December 2026 quarter.

The question is whether this pricing and mix advantage can keep gross margin elevated as lower-margin transceiver revenue grows.

Did the CPO timeline actually change?

This is the biggest sentiment test. Management previously said its ultra-high-power laser ramp for CPO remained on schedule, with meaningful revenue expected in the December 2026 quarter and a multi-hundred-million-dollar order scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2027.

OCS is also ramping under a multiyear, multibillion-dollar purchase agreement, although management said supply constraints are limiting the pace of the ramp. Initial contributions from both scale-out CPO and OCS remain relatively modest.

That matters after recent industry concerns pushed broader CPO volume adoption further into the future and triggered a sharp optical-stock selloff.

For Lumentum, the key question is simple: does management still stand behind its own December 2026 and first-half 2027 CPO milestones?

Options Strategy

$Lumentum (LITE.US)$ 's options complex flashes a mixed tone with total open interest at 260.75K carrying an elevated 1.33 put/call ratio that hints at defensive hedging, yet Aug 14 weekly flows tell a different story as calls dominate volume 3.09K to 1.75K and OI 5.84K to 1.76K with the bulk stacked in out of the money strikes north of 890, while implied vol at 99.64% runs a notch below 111.34% realized and IV Rank of 69 alongside a middling 56% IV Percentile paint a market bracing for outsized moves without fully committing to direction.

$Lumentum (LITE.US)$ 's gamma map for the Aug 14 weekly has shares at $914.69 trading just above a towering Call Wall at $900 that now acts as a magnet and near term resistance, with aggregate GEX firmly positive and cresting overhead while the Put Wall at $850 sits well below as a distant backstop, a dealer positioning setup that argues for sticky price action around the $900 handle with any breach higher likely to invite supply.

Summary

$Lumentum (LITE.US)$ does not need a broad CPO boom to deliver this quarter. EML lasers, scale-across components and high-speed transceivers are already driving strong growth.

A strong fiscal Q1 guide, sustained margins and unchanged CPO milestones would show that the near-term earnings story remains intact despite the recent CPO scare.

Revenue can clear 1B, but keeping gross margin near 49% is the real test. If mix shifts, that baseline gets shaky fast
