Huawei's Chip Design Breakthrough Won't Hurt Global Foundry Outlook -- Market Talk

Dow Jones05-28 12:10

0410 GMT - Huawei's chip design breakthrough won't hurt the outlook of foundries outside China, such as TSMC and UMC, as current demand already overwhelms supply on many fronts, Morningstar analyst Phelix Lee says. Huawei's new design approach promises better chip performance without extreme ultraviolet lithography tools. "This, in theory, sidesteps export restrictions that Huawei and Chinese foundries face while potentially closing in on chip performance," he says in a research note. This bodes well for China's chip ecosystem from chip makers to AI application developers and non-lithography equipment makers. Still, Morningstar cautions that even with design and circuitry optimizations, transistor-level performance remains constrained by 7-nanometer process characteristics, capping the energy efficiency of the design approach.
