Iran likely prepared long in advance of the current war to attack the U.S-U.K military base on Diego Garcia, said Farzin Nadimi, an Iran-focused senior fellow with the Washington Institute, a U.S.-based think tank.
Iran has long viewed the base, located roughly 2,500 miles away, as the likely main staging ground for U.S. strategic bombers in any major war between the two, said Nadimi. While threatening Europe is part of Iran's calculus for developing such long range missiles, Nadimi argued being able to target Diego Garcia is the main strategic aim.
"If they have sufficient range to reach Europe, they have sufficient range to reach Deigo Garcia and vice versa. But I think Deigo Garcia is more critical because of the location and the requirement to have targeting data," said Nadimi.
Nadimi and other experts said Iran probably extended the range of existing missiles by reducing their weight. The complexity of that engineering means it would be difficult for Iran to accomplish while under bombardment for the past three weeks, he said.
