The U.S. military has deployed a second highly trained Marine Corps unit to the Middle East to help exert pressure on the Iranian regime.

The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, nicknamed the "Pride of the Pacific," departed from the U.S. West Coast earlier this week, according to open source imagery. Its roughly 2,500 Marines could be in the Middle East by mid-April, joining another unit likely to arrive in the coming days after deploying from Japan.

These units operate out of ships that serve as a mobile base, and they are capable of fighting across air, land and sea using mechanized infantry, F-35B fighter jets, MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, landing craft, drones and other assets. The units often train to conduct amphibious assaults--a coordinated attack from the sea onto a hostile shore to seize territory.

The 11th MEU operates from the USS Boxer and its amphibious ready group with the USS Portland and the USS Comstock.
