Trump's Tariff Threats Designed to Influence Pending USMCA Talks, Canada PM Carney Says

OTTAWA-Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said President Trump's tariff threats likely represent some prepositioning ahead of negotiations later this year to renew the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade pact.

Carney said Monday he expects a robust review of the continental trade pact, known as USMCA, which the Trump administration will lead later this year. Trade analysts expect Trump and his negotiators to push for more concessions from Canada to keep the deal intact.

Trade tension between the U.S.-Canada accelerated over the past week, with Trump and key administration officials criticizing Carney for striking a trade detente with China, America's biggest rival; and for delivering remarks at the World Economic Forum largely viewed as a rebuke of the White House's aggressive bid to use economic and military might for geopolitical goals.

TALKING POINT 'Gray Divorce' Is Speeding Up the Great Wealth Transfer: How Advisors Can Meet the Moment

The great wealth transfer is often framed as a function of longevity and inheritance: baby boomers aging, assets passing at death, and women ultimately controlling more wealth because they outlive men.

But that doesn't take into account the phenomenon of gray divorce. Even as the U.S. divorce rate has declined over previous decades, the rate of married couples splitting up after age 50 has skyrocketed, doubling between 1990 and 2010, according to research from Bowling Green State University, and tripling among couples 65 and older from 1990 to 2015, according to Pew Research Center.

Gray divorce accelerates the moment when women in their 50s and 60s become wealth holders and decision makers as opposed to future inheritors. Long-term marriages can include joint accounts, outdated estate plans, and concentrated investment positions. Gray divorce unlocks these assets, creating liquidity, forcing portfolio restructuring, and requiring a more active management style.

Advisors who understand this dynamic can better serve Gen X and baby boomer clients while helping to ensure the long-term growth of their practices.

Not willing to settle. Studies have found that women are often initiators of gray divorce, with an AARP survey putting the percentage at 66%. I see that dynamic play out consistently in my practice as women clients make a clear-eyed calculation: If they are in an unhealthy or unhappy marriage, they are no longer willing to settle as they wait to outlive their husbands.

Still, the dissolution of a longstanding union is stressful and often painful as retirement accounts are split, homes are sold or divided, investment accounts are retitled, and estate plans are rewritten. Adding to the pressure, gray divorce often coincides with overlapping caregiving responsibilities for women, whether they involve minor children, aging parents, or adult children with failure-to-launch issues or health problems.

As a result, women exiting marriages can become primary decision makers and primary caregivers at the same time. This combination can result in reshaped investment timelines, accelerated gifting, family support, or redistribution strategies.
