On May 12 local time, U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla announced plans to invest approximately $250 million to expand its Gigafactory located in Gruenheide, near Berlin, Germany. The investment aims to significantly increase the facility's battery cell production capacity and strengthen its supply chain.
According to a statement released by Tesla, this additional investment will raise the plant's annual battery production capacity from the current 8 gigawatt-hours (GWh) to 18 GWh. The company noted that as production scales up, the factory's demand for local labor will also see substantial growth.
Tesla emphasized that this expansion is a crucial step in its strategy to achieve integrated production. The company plans to establish a complete closed-loop manufacturing process at the Gruenheide factory by 2027, encompassing everything from battery cell production to final vehicle assembly. This move is intended to further enhance production efficiency and optimize operational costs.
