Due to emergency rescue safety considerations, China will prohibit concealed door handles starting in 2027, a change that will impact automakers such as Tesla (TSLA) and local competitors like Xiaomi (HKG: 1810).
The mandatory national standard, "Technical Requirements for Automotive Door Handle Safety" (GB 48001—2026), organized and developed by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, has been officially released recently and will take effect on January 1, 2027. This is the world's first technical safety standard for car door handles, and it specifically bans the use of concealed handles on electric vehicles, making China the first country globally to formally introduce such a ban.
