Microsoft has announced plans to invest $1 billion in Thailand over the next two years to develop cloud services and artificial intelligence infrastructure. The investment, confirmed by the Thai government, will also include initiatives to enhance the digital skills of the local workforce. This announcement comes amid a series of recent data center investments aimed at supporting AI growth in the region. As Southeast Asia's second-largest economy, Thailand is accelerating the development of data centers, electronics industries, and power generation projects. The country's first AI hyperscale data center, designed specifically for AI processing and high-performance computing demands, commenced operations in May of last year. This facility, with a power capacity of 20 megawatts, provides robust infrastructure capable of supporting GPU-intensive computations, cloud services, and data-driven industries. According to a joint study by the ASEAN Foundation and Google.org, Thailand leads ASEAN member states in AI adoption rates, with 90.29% of students and 81.34% of teachers regularly using generative AI tools. The report also projected that the ASEAN digital economy will expand from its current $300 billion to $1 trillion by 2030.
