Elon Musk appears highly optimistic about the future prospects of his artificial intelligence company, xAI.
During a recent all-hands meeting at xAI’s San Francisco headquarters, Musk told employees that if the company can endure the next two to three years, it will surpass its competitors. He emphasized that rapid expansion in computing power and data capabilities will be critical in the race toward "superintelligence"—AI surpassing human intelligence—potentially positioning xAI as the most powerful AI company.
Musk suggested that xAI could achieve Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), matching or exceeding human intelligence, within the next few years, possibly as early as 2026. In November, he estimated a 10% probability that xAI’s upcoming Grok 5 model, slated for release early next year, could reach AGI.
Musk highlighted xAI’s financial advantage, citing annual funding of $20–30 billion and synergies with his other ventures. Tesla Motors has already integrated Grok into its vehicles this year. Employees described the meeting as "fast-paced and uplifting," noting Musk’s satisfaction with the company’s progress.
Musk also envisioned building data centers in space and discussed his Mars colonization plans, suggesting Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, could maintain these extraterrestrial facilities. He previously stated Optimus might support SpaceX missions as early as next year. Other tech leaders, including Google’s CEO and OpenAI’s CEO, have also floated the idea of space-based data centers, though the latter acknowledged it as a "moonshot" ambition.
Over the past year, xAI has aggressively expanded its data center infrastructure, dubbed "Colossus," with plans to scale its GPU capacity from 200,000 to 1 million units.
Despite Musk’s influence, xAI remains a newcomer in the fiercely competitive AGI race, dominated by OpenAI and Google. The AI arms race shows no signs of slowing—OpenAI recently entered an "emergency mode" to accelerate its latest model, while Google unveiled Gemini in November, and xAI rapidly rolled out new Grok iterations.
At the meeting, xAI executives showcased product updates, including Grok Voice, Tesla owner applications, and AI agents, featuring improved predictive accuracy, enhanced voice recognition, and video editing capabilities.
