NVIDIA CEO's Foundation Acquires $108M in AI Computing Power for Donation to Research Bodies

Deep News08:01

A filing reveals that the foundation established by NVIDIA Chief Executive Jensen Huang and his wife Lori is purchasing computing resources from CoreWeave and donating them to universities and other non-profit institutions. To date, the value of this donation has reached $108.3 million, according to the document.

The computing resources are intended for scientific and artificial intelligence research, as stated in the Tuesday filing. NVIDIA indicated in the filing that it plans to provide complimentary engineering services to some of the recipient institutions.

This donation not only highlights Huang's philanthropy but also represents another show of support for CoreWeave by NVIDIA. CoreWeave is a cloud computing company specializing in artificial intelligence applications.

NVIDIA designs the graphics processing units (GPUs) that CoreWeave supplies to its customers. In January, NVIDIA invested $2 billion in CoreWeave, becoming the company's second-largest shareholder at the time.

Last year, NVIDIA entered into a $6.3 billion cloud computing capacity agreement with CoreWeave, which guarantees that the AI chipmaker will purchase any cloud capacity not sold to customers.

The chip giant has come under scrutiny for investing billions of dollars in AI firms, including ChatGPT developer OpenAI and neoclouds, raising investor concerns about potential circular financing.

When CoreWeave released its financial results last week, it raised the lower end of its capital expenditure forecast due to rising component costs.
